d. The Reason for Recurring Factors in the Lists<br />

Why are there so many complex principles (some of<br />

these concerning meditation <strong>and</strong> some wisdom) in the<br />

Thirty-seven Wings <strong>and</strong> in the Six Perfections? Factors<br />

are often repeated in different classifications. Why has<br />

the Buddha taught so many? The answer to this question<br />

is to be found through meditation.<br />

Four meditation stages are to be distinguished among<br />

the factors occurring in the different groups of the<br />

Thirty-seven:<br />

i. Those among the Five Roots: these principles are used<br />

for the levels of hearing <strong>and</strong> thinking wisdom.<br />

ii. The same factors in the Five Powers correspond to<br />

their development in samatha.<br />

iii. Among the Noble Eightfold Path, these common<br />

factors are raised to the level of samapatti.<br />

iv. In the Seven Branches are factors for the attainment<br />

of samapana.<br />

Although the last group is usually given before the<br />

Noble Eightfold Path, in practice the Bodhyanga factors,<br />
