It is the same with everyone who has no meditational<br />

power; their precepts are always in danger of being<br />

suddenly broken.<br />

All four gospels teach the same precepts, that they<br />

might be remembered <strong>and</strong> kept. Still one should<br />

concentrate, as in the poem written by Thomas Ady:<br />

"Matthew, Mark, Luke & John;<br />

The bed be blessed that I lie on.<br />

Four angels to my bed,<br />

Four angels around my head,<br />

One to watch, one to pray,<br />

And two to bear my soul away."<br />

ii. Doing good. We may now consider briefly the<br />

second aspect of Vinaya.<br />

In the teaching of Confucius, the relation between ethics<br />

<strong>and</strong> spiritual progress or regress is clearly pointed out.<br />

He said, "To follow what is right is like ascending a hill,<br />

but to follow what is wrong is like being in the l<strong>and</strong>slide<br />

of that hill."<br />

We may now consider briefly the second aspect of<br />

Vinaya.<br />

The Buddha himself clearly warned us in the<br />

Dharmapada:<br />

"It is easy to do things that are bad <strong>and</strong> not beneficial to<br />
