v. Unexcelled Bodhicitta (Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi).<br />

Here we have passed beyond the realms of the ordinary<br />

meditations. This stage of Wisdom-heart is only known<br />

by the attainment of samadhi, <strong>and</strong> so belongs to the<br />

Buddhas' realm. (For another classification of<br />

Bodhicitta, see Ch. XIII, Part. 1, D, 1. c.)<br />

b. Morality<br />

On our diagram, this heading includes the three steps of<br />

the Noble Eightfold Path concerned with morality:<br />

Right Speech, Right Action, <strong>and</strong> Right Livelihood. The<br />

importance of these is amply stressed elsewhere, so we<br />

do not need to say much about them here.<br />

Three aspects of the practice of morality may be seen,<br />

these are: ab<strong>and</strong>oning evil, doing good, <strong>and</strong> benefiting<br />

others.<br />

i. Avoiding evil.<br />

We soon see how difficult this is without practice of<br />

meditation. According to Biblical accounts of early<br />

Christianity, there was little or nothing corresponding to<br />

<strong>Buddhist</strong> practices of concentration. However,<br />

Christians have an ethical code, the Ten<br />

Comm<strong>and</strong>ments, some of which are the same as the<br />

Five Precepts of lay <strong>Buddhist</strong>s (though the<br />

Comm<strong>and</strong>ments are not deeply <strong>and</strong> thoroughly<br />

explained as in Buddhism). In addition, Jesus said:<br />
