the mind should be firmly established in the<br />

Dharma-Jewel by meditating upon the Buddha's<br />

teachings as the highest <strong>and</strong> most secure of refuges.<br />

2. Thinking-wisdom<br />

This can only be developed if one's thinking is trained<br />

to be of an even quality, not breaking from<br />

Dharma-objects for sensual distractions. It should be<br />

continuous, without a break, concentrating on problems<br />

of Dharma.<br />

From stories of the learned followers of Confucius, one<br />

may learn much of what this means. There was Guan<br />

Ning, for instance, who for fifty years sat on a hard<br />

wooden seat in concentration—his continual sitting left<br />

a deep imprint.<br />

Chang Zi Shao studied a teaching of his Master for forty<br />

years, kneeling erect on a floor of tiles in front of a large<br />

pillar. After his sitting, two holes in the tiles were<br />

distinctly visible.<br />

Zuo Si had the idea to write a good composition to<br />

describe the capital city <strong>and</strong> its beauties. First, before<br />

writing <strong>and</strong> completing his works, he thought upon his<br />

subject for twelve years.<br />

Another writer, Wang Chong, wanted to compose his<br />
