Our usual walk brought us to our destination. After<br />

Mr. Chen's ever-cheerful greeting, we sat down to a<br />

few preliminary discussions. The writer had been<br />

kept a little busy by the length of the last chapter<br />

<strong>and</strong> the number of questions arising from it. On a<br />

visit the previous evening to ask Mr. Chen some<br />

questions, the writer had promised to bring some<br />

stamps from Thail<strong>and</strong> for a young Chinese boy's<br />

collection but had forgotten them. Learning that the<br />

young collector was particularly interested in<br />

Japanese stamps, it was noted that many of these<br />

are beautifully designed, some showing the forms of<br />

Buddhas <strong>and</strong> Bodhisattvas. (Mr. Chen had collected<br />

from his mail some stamps of this country, so his<br />

young friend would not be disappointed).<br />

Bhante agreed as to their beauty, but said that<br />

among Tibetans, it was thought very improper that<br />

the pictures of such holy beings should be defaced<br />

by postmarks. To mutilate a representation of the<br />
