meditation.<br />

d. To practice in an auspicious place. This means that<br />

we should practice only in those places favorable by<br />

reason of geomantic features <strong>and</strong> sanctified by some<br />

especially holy event. Bodhi Gaya, Rajagriha, <strong>and</strong><br />

Sarnath are all sacred to <strong>Buddhist</strong>s <strong>and</strong> suitable.<br />

These general conditions are stressed by Taoists but are<br />

certainly very important also to anyone practicing the<br />

Buddha's Teachings.<br />

4. Special Conditions for Westerners<br />

For those practicing meditation in Western countries<br />

there are some special obstructions. These should be<br />

well known <strong>and</strong> guarded against:<br />

a. Pure, fresh air is necessary for breathing in meditation;<br />

that is, air not polluted by industrial fogs, nor made too<br />

hot or too cold by central heating or air conditioning.<br />

b. Do not use a rubber mattress to sleep on or as a seat<br />

for meditation, for the natural currents of air cannot pass<br />

through it.<br />

c. Also, rubber shoes may lead to diseases of the feet<br />

<strong>and</strong> so should be avoided in favor of those made with<br />
