study of geomancy under many famous teachers in<br />

China. He spent much money <strong>and</strong> many long years<br />

of learning, <strong>and</strong> finally became an expert. He knew<br />

very well what was <strong>and</strong> what was not an auspicious<br />

place, <strong>and</strong> then," said the yogi sadly, "he was killed<br />

by the Communists, never having had a chance to<br />

apply all his knowledge to his own practice."<br />

f. The Earth gods of that place should sympathize with<br />

your intentions to meditate there <strong>and</strong> be kind to you.<br />

3. Four General Conditions<br />

These are mentioned in every religion as indispensable<br />

as a background to meditation. They are:<br />

a. For <strong>Buddhist</strong>s, to have good knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />

instructions in Dharma. For meditators everywhere, this<br />

means knowing what to meditate upon.<br />

b. To have good friends who help one <strong>and</strong> do not<br />

obstruct, <strong>and</strong> to be surrounded by those with right views<br />

or at least by those sympathetic to one's aspirations for<br />

practice.<br />

c. To possess sufficient wealth to provide for necessities;<br />
