should be devoted to the regular practice of meditation.<br />

f. If one cannot renounce everything to go to live with a<br />

guru, it is essential at least to have contact with one<br />

from time to time, <strong>and</strong> to take the Refuges from him so<br />

that he becomes one's personal guru. As often as<br />

possible, one should receive <strong>and</strong> then practice his<br />

instructions. (See Appendix II, A, 2).<br />

g. If it is impossible to live as a hermit for long periods,<br />

then one must take advantage of every opportunity to<br />

practice in solitude, even short periods during weekends<br />

<strong>and</strong> holidays (See Appendix I, Part One, B, 4, b &c).<br />

h. If one has not been to the holy places of<br />

Buddha-dharma <strong>and</strong> found there suitable sites for a<br />

hermitage, then at least one should choose a solitary<br />

place for the purpose.<br />

This last point leads to some further considerations<br />

regarding the conditions for retreat.<br />

2. Conditions for a Hermitage (See also Appendix I,<br />

Part One, C, 6.)<br />

a. Food must be easily obtainable.<br />

b. The place must be free from all environmental<br />

dangers.<br />
