takes hold of the mind so as to act as a klesa or<br />

defilement. Hence they are known as "dhyana of<br />

defilement."<br />

After practicing them, one may get some unclear insight<br />

<strong>and</strong> gain a worldly indifference to good or bad.<br />

Therefore they can be called…<br />

Mr. Chen paused a moment, saying, "What is that<br />

Sanskrit word?" He wrinkled his forehead in<br />

thought, <strong>and</strong> then suddenly rising <strong>and</strong> with no time<br />

to waste, he almost ran into his shrine <strong>and</strong> living<br />

room <strong>and</strong> instantly reappeared with the large<br />

Chinese <strong>Buddhist</strong> Dictionary in h<strong>and</strong>. Resting on his<br />

bamboo stool, he smiled broadly. "Supposing<br />

someone invited me to preach…running…getting<br />

dictionary…" He laughed heartily at the thought,<br />

<strong>and</strong> then continued poring over the pages, making<br />

avyakrta (indeterminate). These dhyanas are therefore<br />

called "indeterminate dhyanas." Four criticisms have<br />

been given of these twelve gates <strong>and</strong>, apart from the<br />

dangers described, their worst feature is that they do not<br />

necessarily lead to liberation.<br />
