Fourth Sunday Of Easter April 21, 2013 The Year of Faith Previously we saw that Vatican II devoted an entire document to the theme of ecumenism, the relationship of the Catholic Church to other Christian denominations. It also devoted a separate document to non-Christian religions, a relationship that has similarities but also great differences to the work of ecumenism since we are not talking about seeking re-union amongst divided Christians but of engaging in dialogue with those who do not possess Christian faith. Primary among these relationships is the Chosen People, the Jews, a relationship that tragically has been strained and even tainted by injustice and violence over the centuries. In the modern world, we also see the relevance of how Catholics approach Muslims as that religion makes rapid gains in Europe, which was once Christian. In the modern world, the basic view of pluralism is that all religions are basically equal and just different paths that all lead to the same place. That sounds nice but it is a childish oversimplification; it also completely ignores the role that Christ claimed for himself, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through me.” So, the starting point of the Catholic Church is that “Jesus Christ is the one mediator between God and man.” How then to approach those millions of people who reject this truth? For many centuries the answer was simply avoidance and suspicion. The great revolution in Vatican II is not that it adopted the common modern view that all religions are basically the same, but that it asserted the more complex and challenging strategy of reaching out in respectful dialogue to those with whom we do not share faith in Christ but with whom we share a conviction in the existence of a higher divine power. In the modern world, against the backdrop of increasing atheism and agnosticism, it is true that religious people share something important since so many people today reject any idea of spiritual and divine realities. Religious people of all religions have in common the same important questions: What is man? What is the meaning, the aim of our life? What is moral good, what sin? Whence suffering and what purpose does it serve? Which is the road to true happiness? What are death, judgment and retribution after death? What, finally, is that ultimate inexpressible mystery which encompasses our existence: whence do we come, and where are we going? Christ has answered those questions perfectly, which means that Catholics must offer their friendship to all people, especially those who are seeking the right answer to those same questions. In a certain sense, the main goal of this document is simply the admonition to charity which shapes all human interactions with respect and dialogue. Catholics are blessed with having been given the fullness of God's revelation and the complete means to find salvation. This should lead us to view other religions with the deepest compassion and benevolence. “As the Church has always held and holds now, Christ underwent His passion and death freely, because of the sins of men and out of infinite love, in order that all may reach salvation. It is, therefore, the burden of the Church's preaching to proclaim the cross of Christ as the sign of God's all-embracing love and as the fountain from which every grace flows. We cannot truly call on God, the Father of all, if we refuse to treat in a brotherly way any man, created as he is in the image of God. Man's relation to God the Father and his relation to men his brothers are so linked together that Scripture says: "He who does not love does not know God." Fr. Gregory
