Ascension of The
Lord
May 12, 2013
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
With the conclusion of the Easter Season quickly upon us, I would like to discuss the Great Commission Scene (found in Matthew
28) and the Ascension of Jesus Christ. Both stories hold deep significance not just for the Apostles some 2000 years ago, but for us
today as well.
Jesus called forth the eleven Apostles, His inner circle, to evangelize to all the world., taking place on a mountain and symbolic as
the ‘new Moses’. Even though they had been preaching and healing throughout the land, they were instructed by Jesus to not teach
to everyone until they witnessed the Resurrection. Now is the time, the Lord said, you have witnessed everything (this is similar to
someone teaching a class, you are not able to teach a subject until you have learned the material from start to finish). They are
ready to go out with His help and spread the Gospel to everyone, Gentile Salvation; to all nations. Jesus commissioned the first
disciples and for us, some 2000 years later, to proclaim the Good News, to be the light of the world, to be the salt of the earth, and
take up our crosses and follow Him. One of my favorite mottos correlates to this passage fairly well, coming from St. Francis of
Assisi: ‘preach the Gospel at all times, use words if necessary.’ What a statement that each of us needs to follow – be a disciple of
Christ, in both word and deed. Let us all heed the advice and call of Jesus Christ to evangelize and spread the Good News. Jesus,
our Lord, our Savior, and our Commander gave each of us a task – do it!
Jesus reaches His goal in returning to the Father, which we call the Ascension (celebrated forty days after Easter); at the Mount of
Olives. Jesus’ final apparition ends with the irreversible entry of His humanity into divine glory, symbolized by the cloud and by
Heaven, where He is seated from that time forward at God’s right hand. Jesus Christ, the head of the Church, precedes us into the
Father’s glorious kingdom so that we, the members of His Body, may live in the hope of one day being with Him forever. Jesus
Christ, having entered the sanctuary of Heaven once and for all, intercedes constantly for us as the mediator who assures us of the
permanent outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
It is interesting to note that the Ascension description is very brief, little is made of Christ’s return to Heaven, but rather of the separation
that now exists between Jesus and the world, and in particular with His disciples. The Apostles are to restore the kingdom and
Jesus Christ sits enthroned as king. The Ascension is a royal enthronement, not just a disappearance. Reigning from Heaven, Jesus
the King leaves His royal ministers on earth to handle the earthly affairs of the kingdom. During this separation the disciples (that
means us) are to work, actively spreading the Gospel and spreading the faith, in word and deed. It means not just being a casual
church member, but living it out every day of the week!
In Christ,
Spring is here and we at St. Paul’s are interested in
making this a beautiful spring and summer with
your help. Do you have a green thumb? Do you
Priests and eucharistic ministers regularly visit parishioners at
Provena St. Joseph Hospital. Federal law (HIPPA) does not
allow pastoral visits to a patient’s room unless the patient explicitly
gives permission. If a patient does not notify the hospital
that he or she is a parishioner and desires pastoral visits,
it is illegal for clergy to enter the room. When you are admitted,
it is important that you tell the hospital you belong to St.
Paul the Apostle so that they can put you on their chaplain’s
list accurately. This will ensure that you have sacramental
visits during your stay.
A parishioner who is homebound may call the parish office to
make arrangements for a sacramental visit.
THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD
