Teaching Our Children By Example
Today is my mother’s 98 th birthday. Although she passed away nearly 14 years ago, my siblings and I are all
thinking of her today. Whenever we get together, we are bound to reminisce about our parents, and one of us
will voice what the others are thinking: how much Mom and Dad would have enjoyed the gathering. We miss
them because they so lovingly grounded us in faith and family.
They made sure we went to Mass every Sunday and Holy Day, whether we were at home or travelling on our
annual month-long summer camping vacation. They took us to Saturday evening Benediction, Rosary, and
Confession. They made sure we started every meal with the Grace Before Meals. They made sure we observed
the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. They sacrificed in order to provide a Catholic
education through elementary school, high school, and college for those of us who wanted it.
Holiday dinners are not the same as they were in the days when we all gathered at Mom and Dad’s house, but
we still make a point of getting together and staying in contact because we are family. We often gather for
special events that center on our Faith: Christmas, Easter, Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, weddings.
We were blessed with parents who lived their Baptismal promises every day in commitment to each
other, to their children, and ultimately, to God’s plan for their lives.
They knew joys and sufferings, happiness and sorrow, the same as everyone does. Their faith sustained them,
and their Church guided them as they passed the Faith on to their five children and sixteen grandchildren.
That same faith, in turn, has sustained me through good times and bad as I raised my four children. They
have grown up in troubling times, and I pray that they will continue to find their way through faith, and persevere
in growing always closer to Christ in their life’s journey.
There is no greater legacy to leave your children than to pass the faith on to them by being a living example
every day. May God bless you abundantly with His grace as you teach your children and grandchildren by
your example on your Lenten journey to Easter.

Sunday, March 10 and Monday, March 11 St.
Paul's Religious Education Program will once again present
FLAG. The topic for this FLAG will be "God Calls
People To A Way Of Life (Vocations). All REP families
must register for either the Sunday session (11:45
am until 2:15 pm) or the Monday session (5:45 -8:15
pm). All parishioners are invited to join the REP families
in studying this topic. Please call Sr. Karen's office at
815-725-6927 for more information or to register.
This weekend the Gregurich family will carry the Offertory
gifts at the 4:30 Mass, the Costa familyat 7:30 and the
Ida family at 10:30. Next weekend, the White family will
bring up the gifts at the Saturday mass, the Regal family
at 9 am on Sunday and the Jay family at 10:30 am on
Sunday.
HELP WANTED
St. John the Apostle Parish in Villa Park, IL is seeking
a weekend music director capable of playing the
organ, and directing an adult choir. Must be available
for four (4) weekend Liturgies, as well as, playing
for weddings and funerals. This is a part time unbenefited
position. Interested applicants should

Corpus Christi Parish in Carol Stream, IL is seeking to fill
a full-time Parish Secretary/Bulletin Editor. The Parish
Secretary will be responsible for greeting parishioners,
answering parish phones and directing them to the appropriate
staff member. As the Parish Secretary this position
will perform various secretarial functions and assist the
Pastor as required. As the Bulletin Editor they are responsible
for the intake of bulletin articles and assemble in bulletin
in appropriate manner, as well as, design and layout
of the weekly parish bulletin, with the approval of the Pastor.

Looking for a tax break??With the passage of the
new tax laws, the “charitable rollover” provision has been
reinstated which allows people 70-and-a-half or older to shi
up to $100,000 from an IRA to a qualied charity without
having to count the money toward taxable income. St Paul
the Apostle is such a qualied charity that could benet from
this provision. To handle the charitable gi, follow these ps:
Contact your IRA custodian or representave before making a
gi to arrange for the proper transfer of funds from your
IRA directly to St Paul the Apostle. The check issued from
the IRA must be payable to the charity.
If you personally have elected to have tax withheld from your
normal IRA distribuons, advise your IRA administrator
not to withhold taxes from distribuons to charity.
Consult your tax advisor for the tax reporng of the special
elecon described above.
While this topic is fresh in your mind, why not ask your aorney
and nancial advisor how to make the Church a beneciary
of your will or trust or IRA.

Mass Intentions
Throughout the centuries
Catholics have traditionally
made offerings for the purpose
of having a priest celebrate Holy
Mass for a specific intention.
Usually this is done for the deceased,
in order to apply the
fruits of Christ’s redemptive
sacrifice on the Cross so that
the departed soul might be
freed from Purgatory. Mass can also be offered for the spiritual
benefit of any living person as well.
The offering of Mass for a specific intention is more
than a quaint pious custom; it is rooted in the doctrine that
Holy Mass is a re-presentation of the sacrifice of Calvary.
Thus when the priest offers Mass for a specific intention, it is
the most powerful of all intercessory prayers since it is, in
fact, the very offering of Christ on the Cross for that intention.
Since it involves the most sacred act of all, the
Church lays down rules to be followed for Mass intentions to
preserve the dignity and sanctity of Holy Mass.
Code 948 from the Code of Canon Law etc.
Canon Law (the law that governs the Catholic Church) which
impacts our parish in a particular way: “Separate Masses are
to be applied for the intentions of those for whom a single
offering, although small, has been given and accepted.”
For this reason, in order that the widest range of
people can have Mass offered for their desired intentions,
certain rules have to be put in place:
Each Mass may have only one intention
signed to it on a first come, first served basis.
There will be a limit of 5 Masses per year per
family celebrated here at St. Paul’s.
Additional requests for Mass intentions will
be forwarded through the Chancery to the
Missions and to retired priests of our diocese.
Mass cards will be given for these intentions
the same as for Masses celebrated here at St.
Paul’s and these Mass intentions will be listed
monthly in our bulletin.
Regarding this last situation, stipends from Mass
intentions are a necessary means of support for Mission
priests and retired priests; they are constantly requesting
Mass intentions from parishes. By giving them our surplus
Mass intentions, we are helping to support them and at the
same time you can be assured that Mass is indeed being celebrated
for your desired intention even if it is not celebrated
here at St. Paul’s.
The mass book for 2014 will be open for intentions
on April 1, 2014.
