Reflecting on Mary
I have been doing some Advent reading on Mary the mother of Jesus, thus the mother of God and our mother,
too. My devotion to Mary has grown over the years. I used to think “Why go to Mary when you can go directly
to Jesus?” But over the years I have found that Mary has much to offer if we reflect on her life.
Mary gave her total “yes” to God in complete trust and was able to remain faithful to that “yes”. She has
helped me to say “yes” when I wasn’t sure what I was saying “yes” to. Mary has taught me what a true disciple
of Jesus is and how I must “give birth” to Jesus by the way I live, making visible the WORD in my little
part of the world.. The love she had for her Son must have “poured out” in so many ways. How do I “pour
out” my love on those I live or work with and on those I meet throughout the day?
Yes, I can go directly to Jesus in prayer but it’s nice to talk to His mother too. I ask her to help me love Jesus
as much as she loved her Son. I believe she helps me to do that and she leads me closer to her Son.
Today is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe although the Third Sunday of Advent takes precedence. From the
apparitions that occurred near present day Mexico City, Mary again has taught us about her love and care of
all her children. She appeared to Juan Diego, a poor Aztec Indian, and entrusted him with a message for the
bishop that she wanted “a sanctuary to be erected so that in it I may show and make known and give all my
love, my compassion, my help, and my protection to the people. I am your merciful Mother, the mother of all
of you who live united in this land, and of all mankind, of all those who love me, of those who cry to me, of
those who seek me, of those who have confidence in me. Here I will hear their weeping, their sorrow, and will
remedy and alleviate their suffering, necessities, and misfortunes.”
Besides the message of her love and care, I believe Our Lady of Guadalupe is a sign for all people to love with
equality and justice. As we give “birth” to the gospel we must be respectful of other cultures and never demean
another person. Like Mary we are to see that each person has an inherent goodness and demands our respect.

Third Sunday of Advent…
Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of
spiritual preparation for Christmas and “the Coming of the Lord.” But on the
Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday,
rose may be added to the liturgical environment. The entire liturgy is infused
with the spirit of rejoicing.

REASON TO REJOICE
Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reality of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly
describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In
the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the
list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons
for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them”
(Matthew 11:5).

Men Seeking Holiness .
Fr. Burke Masters and the Diocese
of Joliet are sponsoring a retreat
entitled “Quaerens Sanctitudo”, which
means “Men Seeking Holiness” from
December 27 (5pm) until December 29
(noon) at the St. Charles Borromeo Pastoral
Center. This is for all young men,
married or single, ages 18-35. Several
seminarians from the Diocese of Joliet
will be helping with the retreat. We
will focus on the universal call to holiness,
with talks on silence, virtue, authentic
masculinity, chastity, discernment,
healing and vocations. Cost for
the retreat is $20, which includes five
meals and lodging for two nights. For

for many people. In September 2010 we hosted our 1st annual
Harvest Bike/Walk-a-thon: “Tracking for Tuition”. The
event brought in $3600 in tuition assistance for our current families
that have been at St. Paul’s for at least three years.

and my child. We honestly did not know how we were going to
be able to stay at St. Paul’s, and that is the one steady thing in
our lives right now, since my husband has been out of work.
