Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 7, 2012 The Year of Faith Earlier we saw that one of the most important documents of Vatican II was on the Church in the modern world, a document that emphasized the great problems present in modern society and how Christianity is called to give meaningful answers to the deepest human questions. In that sense, it was a pastoral document, one which spoke of what the Church must be doing. The Council also issued another document on the Church that spoke not about what the mission of the Church is, but what the identity of the Church is, not “what the Church does,” but “what the Church is.” Lumen Gentium, the dogmatic constitution on the Church, is the fruit of a huge debate which was unexpected and totally changed the direction of the original focus of this document. When the working group that drew up the original draft of this document presented it to the Council, they were surprised how the bishops were so dissatisfied with its themes that they wanted a completely different focus. The original plan was to speak of the Church as an institution and a structure of governance. That approach was felt to be woefully inadequate and lopsided. Instead the Church is presented in very Scriptural terms, rooted in the people God called to himself in the Bible. In the Old Testament, God revealed himself and invited a particular people to be his own special possession through the Covenant. God spoke and called; mankind responded and gathered together around the Lord. What was true for the Chosen People of Israel is even more true for the new People of God founded on the Apostles. This is how the Church understands herself: as the chosen people who respond to God in faith. That may sound like a subtle nuance but it is a huge difference from a viewpoint that sees the Church as just a human organization and management structure. Most people today view the Church as a sort of social group that focuses on God. The Church sees herself like the ancient Jews saw themselves in the Exodus: a people called by the Lord to follow him through the desert. The initiative is God's, not our own. And then there naturally arises the question as to what it's all about – what is this call for? That is why the document spends a good portion of its time not talking about structure and management, but about holiness. The Church exists for the sake of making people holy and leading them to heaven. The most important chapter of the document could be said to be Chapter 5, “On the Universal Call to Holiness.” The classes and duties of life are many, but holiness is one-that sanctity which is cultivated by all who are moved by the Spirit of God, and who obey the voice of the Father and worship God the Father in spirit and in truth. These people follow the poor Christ, the humble and cross-bearing Christ in order to be worthy of being sharers in His glory. Every person must walk unhesitatingly according to his own personal gifts and duties in the path of living faith, which arouses hope and works through charity. Quite relevantly then, the document concludes with a Chapter on the Blessed Virgin Mary as the model of perfect holiness and the image of all that the Church is meant to be. If the document starts with the question, “What is the Church meant to be?” It finishes with the answer, “A community of saints.” Fr. Gregory
