I lift up my eyes toward the mountains;
My help is from the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth
—-Psalm 121:1-2
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Christianity is the name given to a life lived as Jesus Christ, the Son of God, lived in word and deed (action). It is a
life based on love and directed toward the achievement of sainthood, while following the moral rules set down by Jesus.
Christianity answers man’s question: ‘What is the purpose of life?’ The answer is simple: to know, to love and to
serve the Lord, in order to go to Heaven. Christian morality distinguishes itself from ethical systems based on natural
morality as well as non-Christian beliefs. For example, humanism is a moral system that denies belief in God and
views humanity as the highest form of existence. Its end is to provide man with a way of life that will help him reach
happiness on earth, but it denies or ignores the question of the existence of an afterlife. Christianity, on the other hand,
is the unveiling of the mystery of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit by Jesus Christ, who is the Son. God is a mystery
beyond words, but Christianity is the communication of divine life and knowledge to man. Consequently, the acknowledgment
and worship of a Triune God aides us in discovering the correct moral approach. Christianity is more than a
set of rules (Matthew 12: 23). Christ was not a moralist (new rules to replace old), He is God’s incarnate love and
came to promote a new way of living. It is an invitation to share the love that can be experienced only by sharing in
God’s own life.
Christianity is no stranger to a moral life. Jesus’ saving message includes a moral system united to it in such a way
that Christianity necessarily includes morality. The morality of Jesus protects the life of our relationship with Him. Together
with sanctifying grace, the Holy Spirit also gives us infused moral virtues, especially the chief moral virtues of
prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. These principal moral virtues are called cardinal virtues because they
are the foundation of all the other moral virtues. The cardinal virtues remove the obstacles to our union with God and
make us lead good Christian lives. Prudence makes us see what we should do and what we should avoid in order to
save our souls, as well as choose the best means to reach Heaven. Justice makes us render to each one his due. Fortitude
gives us strength to do God’s will in the midst of trials and difficulties. Temperance helps control evil desires
and use rightly the things that please our senses. The theological virtues of faith, hope and charity dispose the Christian
to live in a relationship with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These virtues are called theological virtues
because they enable us to share in the divine life of God; given to us at Baptism. Faith is the virtue by which we firmly
believe, on the word of God, all the truths He has revealed. Hope is the virtue by which we firmly trust that God will
give us eternal happiness in Heaven and the means to obtain it. Charity is the virtue by which we love God above all
things for His own sake, and our neighbors as ourselves for the love of God. The human virtues are rooted in the theological
virtues, which adapt man’s faculties for participation in the divine nature: for the theological virtues relate directly
to God. They dispose Christians to live in a relationship with the Holy Trinity. They have the One and Triune
God for their origin, motive, and object. The theological virtues are the foundation of Christian moral activity; they
animate it and give it its special character. They inform and give life to all the moral virtues. They are infused by God
into the souls of the faithful to make them capable of acting as his children and of meriting eternal life and are the
pledge of the presence and action of the Holy Spirit in the faculties of the human being. No truly Christian life can be
found that does not include the specific morality of Jesus. Let’s use this analogy: a person is not a brain, but is composed
of different members that make up his body. In addition, the whole body is animated by the soul. But a person
also has a brain. Furthermore, without the brain, a person ceases to be a person. Such is the relationship between Christianity
and morality: they are not identical; although Christianity involves other realities, a Christian life cannot exist
without morality.
In Christ,
FROM THE BISHOP
WORLD MISSION SUNDAY 2010
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Our Lord, before returning to the Father, promised
His followers the Holy Spirit and charged them with
being His “witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
At Baptism, we too were called to be Christ’s
witnesses. We are to share our faith with those around
us, and to support, in prayer and sacrifice, the work of
missionaries who bring the “Good News” of Jesus to
faraway places – to Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and
remote regions of Latin America.
On World Mission Sunday, celebrated this year
on October 24, the Catholics of the world unite at Mass
to recommit ourselves to this Baptismal vocation to be
missionaries. As we pray and respond here at home, we
are replicating what is also taking place in every parish
and chapel in every corner of the globe. Your generosity
through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith will
reach those who await the “Good News” of Jesus, who
long to experience His hope and love.
More than 1,150 young churches in the Developing
World count on your generous response this World
Mission Sunday. Please also continue to pray that all of
us in the Diocese of Joliet ----may be eager and effective
witnesses of Jesus, as He asked us to be.
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Rev. J. Peter Sartain
St. Paul the Apostle Fall Stewardship Program
The scriptures remind us “To those who are given much,
much is expected in return.” Our God is a generous God who continues
to bless us in so many ways. How can we respond? He reminds us that
if we share our talents, time and treasures with Him, He will bless us 30,
40 and 100 fold. How has the Lord Blessed you?
