New Years come and gone<br />
In champagne rocket sprays of song,<br />
Flurries of kisses under soft stage lights,<br />
Somber hellos, drunken goodbyes,<br />
All those vacant words<br />
and<br />
wasted time.<br />
So even the best of us are left<br />
with ourselves,<br />
within ourselves<br />
on clean bathroom floors,<br />
Mumbling our holy books and nursery rhymes<br />
As we drift off<br />
into<br />
voiceless sleep.<br />

In borrowed shirts, one dismal day<br />
We posed against a wall of grey<br />
Then in a flash, eternalized<br />
Your spirit slipped away<br />
Now all I have to fill the void<br />
Are thumbnails of the paths destroyed<br />
The people we once were, encased<br />
Within a faded Polaroid<br />
Our arms were prearranged “just so”<br />
Our pose mimicked a famed tableau<br />
Our smiles were painted mockeries<br />
Of trends established years ago<br />
I look at us, from head to heel<br />
Our love was simple, quaint, ideal<br />
But how can this be you and me<br />
If not a single inch is real?<br />
