SEASON 2009/2010

The Vanemuine, which celebrates its 140th 

anniversary this season, is the oldest theatre 

in Estonia, founded in Tartu in 1870. It was 

also the first professional theatre in Estonia (1906) and 

is the only three-genre theatre in the country, staging 

operas, operettas and musicals, classical ballet and modern 

dance and drama. The theatre has three different buildings 

and employs more than 350 people, including a ballet 

troupe with a highly international cast, and a large 

symphony orchestra. The theatre often hosts guest 

soloists. The Vanemuine is a repertory theatre – every 

season the programme includes more than 40 different 

productions in a variety of genres.

The musical is about the life of Eva Perón, wife of the Argentine president 

Juan Perón as told by Ché Guevara, another modern icon. „Evita“ was first 

published in 1976 as a musical album. 

The success of the album lead to the production in London West End in 

1978 and a year later in Broadway. In 1996 a movie version was produced 

where Madonna starred as Evita and Antonio Banderas as Ché Guevara. 

Evita as well as Ché symbolize certain naive beliefs in the popular 

culture: faith of a better world; life sacrificed for the poor and the humiliated. 

These are the myths that in their own way follow the example of Christ. 

Actually, it remains unknown whether Ché Guevara and Evita Perón ever 

even met each other...

„Kiss of the Spider Woman“ was first brought on stage in Toronto in 1992, in 

London West End on the same year and in 1993 on Broadway. In 1993 at the 

Tony Award Ceremony „Kiss of the Spider Woman“ was recognized as the best 

musical production, the play then won an award in seven categories all together.

The world premiere took place at Opera Comique in Paris in 1884. It was an 

instant success and it remained in the repertoire of Opera Comique until 

1959. Massenet’s Manon is one of the most popular French operas of all 

times. It talks about the tragic love affair of Manon Lescaut and Le Chevalier 

des Grieux. It is a marvellous example of the music and culture of the 

Paris belle époque.

The author of the lyrics of the musical is Bob Merrill. The libretto was 

written by Peter Stone based on Robert Thoeren’s story and Billy Wilder and 

I. A. L. Diamond’s film Some Like It Hot. 

The plot of the musical is like in the best of soap operas – one never knows 

who is actually who and how the story ends.

The opening night of the Ball at the Savoy took place at Metropol Theater in 

Berlin in 1932. It is the most jazzy sounding operetta by Paul Ábrahám. 

This story takes us to the first half of the 20th century France and describes 

the events in the lives of the married couple Aristide and Madeleine after 

their return from their honeymoon.

continuation to the play “The Barber of Seville” by Beaumarchais and also in relation 

to the namesake opera by Rossini. Rosina has become countess Almaviva, 

Figaro has entered into the count’s employment and prepares for his marriage 

to Rosina’s chamber maid Susanna who is also eyed up by the count…

This is a story of blind love, betrayal and revenge. The court jester, Rigoletto,

in this fight. Blinded by revenge, he unknowingly sacrifices his own daughter.

remind him of his late wife; a courtesan called Giulietta who is under the power 

of the wicked witch, Dapertutto, and wants to be sheltered by Hoffmann.

her feelings. Onegin rejects the girl´s declaration of love gently, but firmly. 

V. Medvedev´s ballet version of one of the most loved verse-format novel of 

the same name by Russian literature classic aleksandr Pushkin.

With the premiere of Giselle in 1841 in the Paris Opera Theatre, romantic
