<strong>Athletes</strong><br />

Alongstanding tradition at the<br />

University of Florida is becoming<br />

more visible everyday. More and<br />

more Gator athletes are now two-sport<br />

participants, taking part in more than one<br />

sport.<br />

Football players have had success in<br />

both football, as well as track and field,<br />

baseball and basketball.<br />

In recent years, Gator football players<br />

have participated on the UF basketball,<br />

baseball and track and field squads.<br />

A Gator receiver in 1998<br />

and 1999, John Capel (right)<br />

emerged as one of the<br />

world’s top young sprinters.<br />

He won the 200 meters at<br />

the USA Olympic trials and<br />

advanced to the finals in<br />

that event at 2000 Summer<br />

Olympics in Australia.<br />

In 1987, four Gator football players, (cornerback<br />

Tony Jones, wide receiver Ed Frazier, free<br />

safety Louis Oliver and wide receiver Stacey<br />

Simmons) ran the fastest time in the nation<br />

and then the fourth fastest time in the world<br />

in the 4 x 200 indoor relay.<br />

J. Lewis Hall (left) was one of UF’s most successful<br />

two-sport stars in the 1950’s. Hall was<br />

the NCAA outdoor high jump champion in<br />

1951 and 1953, as well as the Most Valuable<br />

Player in UF’s 1953 Gator Bowl victory over<br />

Tulsa, Florida’s first bowl game.<br />
