Two Sport
Athletes
Alongstanding tradition at the
University of Florida is becoming
more visible everyday. More and
more Gator athletes are now two-sport
participants, taking part in more than one
sport.
Football players have had success in
both football, as well as track and field,
baseball and basketball.
In recent years, Gator football players
have participated on the UF basketball,
baseball and track and field squads.

Running back Bo Carroll

nation’s top sprinters who
has earned All-America
honors in track and All-SEC
recognition on the football
field.
A Gator receiver in 1998
and 1999, John Capel (right)
emerged as one of the
world’s top young sprinters.
He won the 200 meters at
the USA Olympic trials and
advanced to the finals in
that event at 2000 Summer
Olympics in Australia.
In 1987, four Gator football players, (cornerback
Tony Jones, wide receiver Ed Frazier, free
safety Louis Oliver and wide receiver Stacey
Simmons) ran the fastest time in the nation
and then the fourth fastest time in the world
in the 4 x 200 indoor relay.
J. Lewis Hall (left) was one of UF’s most successful
two-sport stars in the 1950’s. Hall was
the NCAA outdoor high jump champion in
1951 and 1953, as well as the Most Valuable
Player in UF’s 1953 Gator Bowl victory over
Tulsa, Florida’s first bowl game.

Gator quarterback Doug
Johnson (left) played for
the Tampa Bay Devil
Rays organization in
each of the 1996 and
1997 summers after
being a second round
choice in the Major
League Baseball Draft
in June of 1996. He completed
his Gator career
in 1999 throwing for
over 7,000 yards and 70
TDs. He became a starting
QB for the Atlanta
Falcons in 2000
