And as the timbers creak and warp<br />

against their rusty nails<br />

and the Captain orders everyone up onto deck<br />

you will guide the way to safety<br />

And when the ship reaches the seething rock-cliffs<br />

and the foaming water launches itself against impenetrable land<br />

and the ship loses its course<br />

you will show the way to shore<br />

lighthouse.<br />

And when the captain throws up his hands<br />

in defeat, and the crew members risk their luck<br />

with the churning water, and the ship spins out of control<br />

you will guide the way to safety<br />

lighthouse.<br />

After the storm, when the water is calm<br />

and all that can be seen of the damage<br />

are planks of timber tossing on the sea<br />

you will sit there, serene<br />

lighthouse.<br />

A clever use of repetition to reinforce the solid, looming presence of<br />

the lighthouse against the chaos of a violent storm and scenes of a<br />

shipwreck in progress.
