Falling, Flying<br />
Falling.<br />
Air rushing past my ears.<br />
A blur of colours in my sight.<br />
Dropping to the face of the earth.<br />
Eyes dry, mouth closed.<br />
Racing against the breath of time.<br />
Then stop.<br />
Rewind.<br />
Up, up into the sky.<br />
Up, past the skyscrapers.<br />
Up, past the clouds.<br />
Not falling.<br />
Flying.<br />
Judge’s Comment<br />
A breathtaking poem with its contrast between falling and flying, and its<br />
reversal in the middle. There is much for the reader to contemplate about<br />
what is happening here – is this a poem of the magic of rewind, of<br />
salvation, or a sadder tale where the rewind signals a release from<br />
whatever made the person fall in the first place?
