Reform curricula to include educati<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>sustainable</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>development</str<strong>on</strong>g> at all educati<strong>on</strong>al levels,<br />

adopting measures to instituti<strong>on</strong>alize, finance and sustain it based <strong>on</strong> research, capacitybuilding<br />

and <strong>the</strong> exchange and systematizati<strong>on</strong> of experiences<br />

At <strong>the</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>al level, this includes developing skills to identify and reduce envir<strong>on</strong>mental and<br />

health-related costs in various professi<strong>on</strong>al fields, especially those relating to design, c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong>, land<br />

use, infrastructure, machinery and equipment, and regulatory frameworks.<br />

(b)<br />

Address pre-existing needs, such as retaining children and young people in <strong>the</strong> educati<strong>on</strong><br />

system, improving <strong>the</strong> skills and recogniti<strong>on</strong> of teachers in public educati<strong>on</strong>, mainstreaming<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> and communicati<strong>on</strong> technologies (ICTs) in educati<strong>on</strong>, and better management<br />

of schools and centralized and decentralized bodies<br />

The school <strong>da</strong>y needs to be leng<strong>the</strong>ned and <strong>the</strong> curriculum expanded proporti<strong>on</strong>ally, and preuniversity<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> must be made available for all.<br />

(c)<br />

Promote and encourage educati<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>sustainable</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>development</str<strong>on</strong>g> outside <strong>the</strong> formal system<br />

This could be achieved, for example, by supporting <strong>the</strong> work of n<strong>on</strong>-governmental<br />

organizati<strong>on</strong>s (NGOs) that run envir<strong>on</strong>mental, popular educati<strong>on</strong> and human rights programmes for<br />

women and indigenous and Afro-descendent communities (am<strong>on</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r groups) in <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own languages. This approach includes democratizing and using ICTs as vehicles for raising broader<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>mental awareness.<br />

public, seeking cultural change and paying special attenti<strong>on</strong> to building technical capacity<br />

am<strong>on</strong>g disadvantaged and underrepresented groups, such as women, indigenous people and<br />

Afro-descen<strong>da</strong>nts<br />

Finance educati<strong>on</strong>, especially am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> poor, young people and women, <strong>on</strong> sexual and<br />

reproductive rights, that including a comprehensive sex educati<strong>on</strong> that deals <strong>from</strong> early<br />

childhood with gender equality and self-care issues, in order to help reduce gender violence,<br />

unwanted pregnancies, maternal mortality and <strong>the</strong> spread of sexually transmitted diseases<br />

such as HIV/AIDS<br />

Reform science and technology systems in order to improve <strong>the</strong>ir management and<br />

encourage innovati<strong>on</strong> and knowledge generati<strong>on</strong>, with a view to boosting competitiveness in<br />

knowledge-intensive and envir<strong>on</strong>mentally friendly sectors and thus enable a transiti<strong>on</strong> to<br />

more <str<strong>on</strong>g>sustainable</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>development</str<strong>on</strong>g> (see box VI.4)<br />

Finance cross-disciplinary research that encourages <strong>the</strong> generati<strong>on</strong> of new technologies aimed at<br />

meeting <strong>the</strong> needs of <strong>the</strong> countries of <strong>the</strong> regi<strong>on</strong> and, in particular, disadvantaged groups
