Junior Report 2009 season in juniors. Alex Sheard – for another year, also his last in juniors, Alex again served as the core of the midfield players. Alex showed a consistently high work rate whether moving back in defence or forward in attack and demonstrated his speed and ball skills constantly. Once inside the circle he also proved his versatility as a player and finished the season being the third player to share the top goal scoring spot. Dominic Tintner – Dominic is one of the first year 17 players although his season last year gave him plenty of practice as an interchange. Solid as a defender with great speed and excellent tackling capacity, Dom supported the mid-field and backs throughout the season. He also acquitted himself admirably in the forward line up and snatched the second top spot for goals scored for the team. Mitchell Graham - Mitchell joined the team in mid-season after Paris had to withdraw. His frantic journey from Campbelltown to play with us each week was greatly appreciated. Mitchell displays good speed and focus on the ball. He was able to negotiate the defence and move the ball into the circle for the final assault on goal leaving a wake of overcome opposition players. This was a very strong competition with the top eight teams from Sydney junior clubs providing challenging games each week. Our team was made up predominantly of first year under 15 players so we knew it would not be easy, regularly facing teams full of Sydney Firsts and State players. The season opened on a Friday night far away at Ku-Ring-Gai playing Gordon North Sydney and took us across many Sydney hockey fields. Some of the games were very close; some were blowouts as bigger, stronger and more experienced players banged in goal after goal. But the kids never gave up and two of their best games were against the eventual Premiers Sutherland where they dug deep and held them until the last quarter. We welcomed the De Weerd family to the club this year with Rebecca and Natasha providing heaps of speed up front causing trouble for opposition fullbacks, and brother Tim always working hard at Inner. The girls also played in the Glebe Womens First Grade side this year. Ethan Doughty stepped up this year with strength and improved stick skills to create many scoring opportunities from the limited ball that would come his way. Callam Barrett was new to hockey but wanted to learn and certainly developed as a player on the wing, always working back to help his halves. Scott Madycki showed a new level of hockey maturity this year with commitment, improved skills and decision-making whilst on the ball. He was the regular Players’ Player award winner and scored some great goals. Who will forget that goal at St George when he chased down a ball to within an inch of the base line and put in an acute-angle goal to the surprise of the opposition goalie, players, coach … in fact everyone!! Tim Fleming played mostly at inner and half and his strong hits and tackling were a standout. Unfortunately, school sport commitments did not allow Glebe District Hockey Club 79th Year Page 7
