Junior Report 2009 Under 17A Team L to R: Alex Sheard, Shane Brown (Manager), Corey Morrow, Alisdair Brown, Kolja Brockmann, Eugene Brown, Dominic Tintner, Jake Ribarovski, Will Noller, Max Jefferys, Dean Morrow (Coach), Eoghan O’Donell, Dion Condack Front: Cameron Elliott Absent: Mitchell Graham, Paris Litton-Strain This year saw a number of new players join the team but quickly settle into the routine of training and hard matches. Our draw did have an uneven number of teams which lead to a bye, once per cycle for each team. This coupled with “lay days” for school holidays, state champs and other competitions left the team with an unusual number of large breaks between matches. Despite the difficulty in maintaining match fitness, the team quickly settled down and progressed through the season taking each match on its merits. With a strong forward line ably supported by excellent mid-field distributional skills and rock solid defence, the team put together some stunning passages of play. Even in games which went “to the wire”, the Glebe boys on song were a delight to watch. The season did have its shares of injury and illness with Paris unfortunately injuring himself after only the sixth match and left him on the bench for the remainder of the season. During the height of the flu season (swine and all) we also suffered with players declared unavailable or struggling onto the field feeling very poorly. We were pleased to welcome Mitchell Graham to our ranks after Paris’ departure and also relied heavily on Dion Condack (U15’s) to carry us through the latter part of the season. It was an absolute credit to the team that they progressed through until the last 3 matches of the season having not lost a match. Unfortunately, either a minor slump by the team or the competition peaking later in the season, we suffered three losses in a row to the strongest teams in the comp. Instead of entering the semi finals as Minor Premiers we entered the series playing for continuity and sadly lost narrowly to a very hungry Ryde side. From the perspective of coaching and administration, it is easy to say that this group has been a pleasure to be with throughout the season. Junior Report 2009 Song early in the season and even after our loss in the semi-finals the mature and balanced way the players managed their disappointment was a credit to them all. For many of the team this will be their last years in Juniors and we wish them all the very best for their future as hockey players. We anticipate that we will continue to see stunning performances from them all, on the field in the future. For those of you who remain in 17’s for one more year, we wish you all the very best for the competition next year and will follow your progress with interest. Kolja Brockmann – Kolja joined us as an international exchange student from Germany and from day 1 showed an enthusiasm and team spirit that was contagious. Playing mainly in the mid-field, he was lightning fast to the ball and a ferocious competitor for it when he got there. When given a “spell” in the forwards to rest his legs, he also showed himself to be a strong striker of the ball raising questions as to where best to place him in future games. Thanks for playing with us Kolja and all the best on your return home. Alasdair Brown – Alasdair, playing his last year in juniors, moved from his accustomed inner position to the back line. His speed onto the ball, his vision and his ability to move it quickly forward either through the mid-field or direct to the strikers was instrumental in opening many of the attacking passages of play throughout the season. Eugene Brown – Eugene was one of the new players in the U17’s team and has shown enormous development throughout the season. Playing in the forward line, Eugene was always very quick and as his ball skills developed to become a major component of the team’s attack. Cameron Elliott – Cameron was also a “first timer” on the team this year having joined us from one of those – “not to be spoken of” - Northern Clubs. Cam filled the goals with confidence and enthusiasm throughout the year and provided us with some astounding saves. We all enjoyed his slide into the goal mouth each match – ready for battle. Max Jefferys – also playing for the first time in U17’s Max proved himself to be a versatile player whether on the wing or at an inner or in mid-field positions. Max is a solid competitor and as a result played a major role in many of the team’s attacking plays. Paris Litton-Strain – sadly Paris left the season early due to injury and left a large hole to fill. He was always strong in defence and quick and capable in distributing the ball to the forwards. We hope the recovery is complete Paris and wish you well for your future. Corey Morrow – Corey formed the other mainstay of final defence throughout the year. His powerhouse tackle rarely saw an opponent evade him and coupled with his speed and agility made it very difficult for his opponents to intercept, once he had the ball. On short corners, the oncoming opposition always faltered a step when they realized Corey was taking the shot. Corey too was playing his last year in U17’s. William Noller – William, one of the players who will be leaving juniors, has consistently filled one of the main striker roles throughout the year. His tenacity in attacking the ball and then taking it to the circle regardless of the swarm of defending players followed by his driving shots on goal has elevated him to equal top goal scorer for the season. Eoghan O’Donnell – Eoghan in his last years of juniors, has been one of the team’s stalwart players. Carrying an injury for much of the season Eoghan played week after week and gave his all on every occasion. With lightning pace down the wing, Eoghan often was the player to arrive at the right moment to pop in that unexpected goal. Jake Ribarovski – Jake also was a key part of the goal scoring attack for the team. Mostly at the inner position, with dazzling speed and outstanding stick skills, Jake was able to weave his way through a seeming wall of defensive sticks to deliver the ball into the circle for his own or another’s shot. He too has been rewarded in sharing the top goal scoring spot – a fine memory for his last Glebe District Hockey Club 79th Year Page 5
