Junior Report 2009 U11A Redbacks Back Row: Brayden Morrow, Geoff Baird (Assistant Everything!!), Shanti Hughes (Manager), Sam Alexander, Arvind Hughes (Coach) Middle Row: Angus Baird, Alice Schacher, Miriam Pritchard, Alanna Howe, Jackson Howe, Ryan Howe, Hugo Hughes, Tim Pritchard, Jack May Front Row: Callam Baird, Jack Beehan This season we had the task of defending our title, however we came up against a bigger, tougher opposition in the Grand Final and were unable to hold out. The group consisted of very young, very craZZZy players, many of whom still have another two more years in the under 11’s, and with only two players having played in this Division, we had a major task at hand. Each player has skills greater than the normal U11 player and considering their age the U11’s will be very strong in seasons to come. Watch out Sutherland! We started the season off with an unbeaten streak of seven games; unfortunately many of these results were draws. The sequence of draws right at the start of the season was the deciding factor in our second place finish after the round games. We lost the Major Semi Final and salvaged a well earned draw in the Preliminary Final to obtain a well deserved spot in the Grand Final. As always it was a great pleasure to coach the team this season, and I hope these players continue to play hockey for Glebe in the future. I would like to thank Manager Shanti, “Mum” for being my parrot when the players could not hear me on the field, Geoff Baird for being our umpire every week, David Pritchard for assisting with pre-match warm ups and the other parents for their assistance throughout the year. Junior Report 2009 Sam Alexander (Fullback) - he always appeared at the opportune moment, either in time to clear the ball, make a tackle or intercept a pass. He was solid at the back and would either let the ball past or the player... but not both. Angus Baird (Wing/Half) - initially started as a half, but his speed was put to better use on the wing. He gave his opposite number a terribly hard job and always played with great enthusiasm. Calam Baird (Centre Forward) - was our smallest and youngest player on the team, but don’t let his size fool you, he has many skills in his bag of tricks, one of them being a wicked hit. One to look out for in the future years. Jack Beehan (Goalie) - Mr No Fear, has developed immensely over the season, with some outstanding performances in the late round games and the finals. The scores would have been considerably different if it wasn’t for him. He made an incredible one on one sliding save to keep a draw in order to advance to the Grand Final. Alanna Howe (Half) - has a great eye for the ball, which was put to good use in defence, with many a great tackle. But what distinguished her was her marking ability - the poor opposition winger! Incredibly this was her first year of hockey too, Looking forward to seeing her in the future. Jackson Howe (Fullback) - was our resident full back with Sam, who could pull off a goal saving tackle. He developed a robust hit over the course of the season, and a solid understanding of key defensive concepts. Ryan Howe (Wing) - a key member of our forward line (top goal scorer), a formidable finisher he developed immensely throughout the season. Each week his mantra was “trap before you shoot”. Hugo Hughes (Inner) - was one of the experienced players on the team, and it was displayed through his knowledge of the game, and his positive enthusiasm towards the team. Jack May (Inner) - Chief Annoyer, Jack constantly ran, caused trouble in both attack and defence, whether it be a goal or frustrating the opposition. Brayden Morrow (Centre Half) – Brayden, another experienced player, played the pivotal role of centre half this year. His distribution of the ball was superb through his phenomenal hit which could slice an opposing team in half. Miriam Pritchard (Centre Forward) - on her day she could run riot through the opposition defence, has great hand eye coordination and her passing to players in space greatly improved towards the end of the season. I hope she continues to play. Tim Pritchard (Utility) - possesses a tremendous amount of skill, from stick work to the ability to adjust to any position. He can literally play everywhere from the forward line to the halves and even fullback. A great asset to any team. Alice Schacher (Half) - her positional play, ball control and tackling improved every single week, and this was evident in the Final games.
