Junior Convenor’s Report 2009 

It is with much pleasure that I present the 2009 Annual Junior Report of the Glebe District Hockey 

Club in its 79 th year. 

2009 has again been another busy year for the Glebe Juniors with five Under 11 and Under 13 

teams in the Central Area competition, one U15 team in the Sydney-Wide competition and one 

Under 17 team in the A Division of the Sydney Hockey Association competition. Our Club 

Championship Trophy won in 2008 unfortunately retuned to Sutherland this year, however we had 

two teams in the Grand Final

Congratulations to all teams and a very big thank you to all the coaches, managers, players, parents 

and helpers who provided an environment where the kids had fun and improved their hockey skills. 

The U17 team once again made it through to the Finals, continuing a strong showing in this 

competition. Over the last 16 years, the club has played in every final series reaching 11 Grand 

Finals and winning 9 premierships (5 in the last 7 years)! The team had a slow start to the year 

followed by a strong mid-season and then back to a slow finish, eventually losing the Minor Semi- 

Final. This is the last year of Juniors for many of the boys, however most are playing in our Senior 

grades. 

We had a team back in the U15 Sydney-Wide competition this year. This is run by the Sydney 

Junior Hockey Association and comprised the eight top teams across Sydney. The standard of 

competition was very strong and with many of our players being first year the team struggled at 

times to match the opposition. Nevertheless, they didn’t give up and the experience gained will 

benefit them next year. Thanks to our two young gun coaches Nathan and Matt in their first full 

season of coaching. 

Many new players joined us this year for U13 and we went close to fielding three teams. However, 

private school sport commitments meant not all players could attend every week, so two teams were 

entered. The U13A Redbacks team reached the Grand Final but could not beat their nemesis 

Sutherland. The U13B Strikers lost a close Preliminary Final game and overall enjoyed their 

season. There are many talented girls in the Under 13 age group and we hope they will continue 

playing through to the senior teams. 

Once again we fielded 3 x U11 teams and it is great to see more players coming through from our 

minkey ranks. The U11A Redbacks made it to the Grand Final (another loss to Sutherland!!) and 

with most of the players still in U11 next year, we hope we can regain the premiership shield won 

last year. Both the U11B Strikers and Hornets teams had a tough year on the field, playing against 

strong teams from some clubs that fielded teams only in B Division. The kids had lots of fun though 

thanks mostly to their great coaches – Alison, Tom and Eliza – who always kept things positive!! 

Our Minkey year was as popular as ever with Vernon, Alison, Nicola and helpers coaching up to 40

children each Saturday morning down at Jubilee. Ages range from 3 to 9 years, and the program is 

centred on fun and involvement whilst learning basic skills. This is a great breeding ground for the 

stars of the future plus it is a wonderful opportunity for parents and their kids to be involved 

together in an outdoor activity. 

On a sad note, we did not hold our Junior Carnival this year. This has been an annual event since 

1996 and was the last of six club carnivals remaining in the Sydney area. Team numbers have been 

dwindling over the last four years due to a number of reasons – general apathy, grass not the 

“preferred” surface, busy lives, too much hockey etc. The carnival also provided a great opportunity 

to badge Junior Umpires. We will put a big effort into restoring this for next year, but will need a 

lot of help to do it! 

Finally I would like to thank the following: 

• Our major Junior Sponsors Just Hockey and the Toxteth Hotel which makes a sizeable 

monetary donation each year for Junior Development. 

• Bakers Delight, Glebe Point Road – Rav and staff supplied us with bread and rolls during 

the season plus dozens of scones for our Grand Final teams. 

• Our coaches & managers – a mixture of dedicated parents, senior members and players. No 

other Sydney club has as many senior players and former Glebe juniors coaching juniors. 

• Vernon Howe, Alison Cheong & Nicola Erving – our very special minkey coaches 

• Googa (Andrew Goodrick), Geoff Hammett, Liz Fleming and Patricia Doughty who ran the 

clubhouse. Also the parents who helped with the BBQ each week 

• Louise Tapsell – our club PR officer. Made sure the community heard about our club’s 

activities and successes (especially Tim Bailey and Channel 10) 

• Glebe Management Committee – Bob Taylor, Danny O’Brien and the committee for their 

help during the season 

The club has some exciting junior development programs coming up including school visits and 

Just Hockey in January school holidays. 

We hope to have another great year in 2010. Sign-on will be Wednesday 3 February 2010 (5:30pm 

- 7:00pm) and Sunday 7 February 2010 (9am - 11:00am) at the clubhouse. I would like to close by 

including something from Glebe’s own Mark Paterson who has been filing reports for our club 

newsletter on his year with the Kookaburras (see back page of this report): 

“One night after training the entire squad sat down to discuss what it would take to become the best 

team in the world, the footnote to this was that for this to be accomplished we need to be the best 

training team in the world. We theorised what it would take to achieve this. A lot of what we talk 

about is not complicated or rocket science; it is about performing the fundamentals skills of the 

game at a higher level then every other team in international hockey, as well as being fitter and 

able to sustain pressure for vast amounts of time during a game of hockey. I think some of this is 

extremely applicable to the teams of the Glebe District Hockey Club, to be the best team you must 

train as you play we have subsequently coined it Perfect Practice, you must be able to trap, pass 

and execute the basic skills at a higher level than the competition, especially when fatigued.” 

Good words Patto! See you all next year.

This year saw a number of new players join the team but quickly settle into the routine of training 

and hard matches. Our draw did have an uneven number of teams which lead to a bye, once per 

cycle for each team. This coupled with “lay days” for school holidays, state champs and other 

competitions left the team with an unusual number of large breaks between matches. 

Despite the difficulty in maintaining match fitness, the team quickly settled down and progressed 

through the season taking each match on its merits. With a strong forward line ably supported by 

excellent mid-field distributional skills and rock solid defence, the team put together some stunning 

passages of play. Even in games which went “to the wire”, the Glebe boys on song were a delight 

to watch. The season did have its shares of injury and illness with Paris unfortunately injuring 

himself after only the sixth match and left him on the bench for the remainder of the season. 

During the height of the flu season (swine and all) we also suffered with players declared 

unavailable or struggling onto the field feeling very poorly. We were pleased to welcome Mitchell 

Graham to our ranks after Paris’ departure and also relied heavily on Dion Condack (U15’s) to 

carry us through the latter part of the season. 

It was an absolute credit to the team that they progressed through until the last 3 matches of the 

season having not lost a match. Unfortunately, either a minor slump by the team or the competition 

peaking later in the season, we suffered three losses in a row to the strongest teams in the comp. 

Instead of entering the semi finals as Minor Premiers we entered the series playing for continuity 

and sadly lost narrowly to a very hungry Ryde side. 

From the perspective of coaching and administration, it is easy to say that this group has been a 

pleasure to be with throughout the season. Our ears still ring from the volume of the Glebe Victory

Song early in the season and even after our loss in the semi-finals the mature and balanced way the 

players managed their disappointment was a credit to them all. 

For many of the team this will be their last years in Juniors and we wish them all the very best for 

their future as hockey players. We anticipate that we will continue to see stunning performances 

from them all, on the field in the future. For those of you who remain in 17’s for one more year, we 

wish you all the very best for the competition next year and will follow your progress with interest. 

Kolja Brockmann – Kolja joined us as an international exchange student from Germany and from 

day 1 showed an enthusiasm and team spirit that was contagious. Playing mainly in the mid-field, 

he was lightning fast to the ball and a ferocious competitor for it when he got there. When given a 

“spell” in the forwards to rest his legs, he also showed himself to be a strong striker of the ball 

raising questions as to where best to place him in future games. Thanks for playing with us Kolja 

and all the best on your return home. 

Alasdair Brown – Alasdair, playing his last year in juniors, moved from his accustomed inner 

position to the back line. His speed onto the ball, his vision and his ability to move it quickly 

forward either through the mid-field or direct to the strikers was instrumental in opening many of 

the attacking passages of play throughout the season. 

Eugene Brown – Eugene was one of the new players in the U17’s team and has shown enormous 

development throughout the season. Playing in the forward line, Eugene was always very quick 

and as his ball skills developed to become a major component of the team’s attack. 

Cameron Elliott – Cameron was also a “first timer” on the team this year having joined us from 

one of those – “not to be spoken of” - Northern Clubs. Cam filled the goals with confidence and 

enthusiasm throughout the year and provided us with some astounding saves. We all enjoyed his 

slide into the goal mouth each match – ready for battle. 

Max Jefferys – also playing for the first time in U17’s Max proved himself to be a versatile player 

whether on the wing or at an inner or in mid-field positions. Max is a solid competitor and as a 

result played a major role in many of the team’s attacking plays. 

Paris Litton-Strain – sadly Paris left the season early due to injury and left a large hole to fill. He 

was always strong in defence and quick and capable in distributing the ball to the forwards. We 

hope the recovery is complete Paris and wish you well for your future. 

Corey Morrow – Corey formed the other mainstay of final defence throughout the year. His 

powerhouse tackle rarely saw an opponent evade him and coupled with his speed and agility made 

it very difficult for his opponents to intercept, once he had the ball. On short corners, the oncoming 

opposition always faltered a step when they realized Corey was taking the shot. Corey too was 

playing his last year in U17’s. 

William Noller – William, one of the players who will be leaving juniors, has consistently filled 

one of the main striker roles throughout the year. His tenacity in attacking the ball and then taking 

it to the circle regardless of the swarm of defending players followed by his driving shots on goal 

has elevated him to equal top goal scorer for the season. 

Eoghan O’Donnell – Eoghan in his last years of juniors, has been one of the team’s stalwart 

players. Carrying an injury for much of the season Eoghan played week after week and gave his all 

on every occasion. With lightning pace down the wing, Eoghan often was the player to arrive at the 

right moment to pop in that unexpected goal. 

Jake Ribarovski – Jake also was a key part of the goal scoring attack for the team. Mostly at the 

inner position, with dazzling speed and outstanding stick skills, Jake was able to weave his way 

through a seeming wall of defensive sticks to deliver the ball into the circle for his own or another’s 

shot. He too has been rewarded in sharing the top goal scoring spot – a fine memory for his last 



season in juniors. 

Alex Sheard – for another year, also his last in juniors, Alex again served as the core of the midfield 

players. Alex showed a consistently high work rate whether moving back in defence or 

forward in attack and demonstrated his speed and ball skills constantly. Once inside the circle he 

also proved his versatility as a player and finished the season being the third player to share the top 

goal scoring spot. 

Dominic Tintner – Dominic is one of the first year 17 players although his season last year gave 

him plenty of practice as an interchange. Solid as a defender with great speed and excellent 

tackling capacity, Dom supported the mid-field and backs throughout the season. He also acquitted 

himself admirably in the forward line up and snatched the second top spot for goals scored for the 

team. 

Mitchell Graham - Mitchell joined the team in mid-season after Paris had to withdraw. His frantic 

journey from Campbelltown to play with us each week was greatly appreciated. Mitchell displays 

good speed and focus on the ball. He was able to negotiate the defence and move the ball into the 

circle for the final assault on goal leaving a wake of overcome opposition players.

After a year’s break from the Sydney Wide Under 15 competition, Glebe was back with an 

enthusiastic bunch of kids and two young coaches. This was a very strong competition with the top 

eight teams from Sydney junior clubs providing challenging games each week. Our team was made 

up predominantly of first year under 15 players so we knew it would not be easy, regularly facing 

teams full of Sydney Firsts and State players. 

The season opened on a Friday night far away at Ku-Ring-Gai playing Gordon North Sydney and 

took us across many Sydney hockey fields. Some of the games were very close; some were 

blowouts as bigger, stronger and more experienced players banged in goal after goal. But the kids 

never gave up and two of their best games were against the eventual Premiers Sutherland where 

they dug deep and held them until the last quarter. 

We welcomed the De Weerd family to the club this year with Rebecca and Natasha providing heaps 

of speed up front causing trouble for opposition fullbacks, and brother Tim always working hard at 

Inner. The girls also played in the Glebe Womens First Grade side this year. Ethan Doughty stepped 

up this year with strength and improved stick skills to create many scoring opportunities from the 

limited ball that would come his way. Callam Barrett was new to hockey but wanted to learn and 

certainly developed as a player on the wing, always working back to help his halves. 

Scott Madycki showed a new level of hockey maturity this year with commitment, improved skills 

and decision-making whilst on the ball. He was the regular Players’ Player award winner and 

scored some great goals. Who will forget that goal at St George when he chased down a ball to 

within an inch of the base line and put in an acute-angle goal to the surprise of the opposition 

goalie, players, coach … in fact everyone!! Tim Fleming played mostly at inner and half and his 

strong hits and tackling were a standout. Unfortunately, school sport commitments did not allow 



him to play all games but he always dug deep when he played. Jordan Dart was our Centre Half 

until he moved to Tasmania midway during the season. Jordan anchored the centre field and was 

able to get the ball through to the forwards and set up goal scoring opportunities. Max McInnes 

took over his role and often showed some clever stick skills to get past the opposition. Max also 

played Glebe Mens this year and that experience came through on the field. 

Dion Condack was a second year player and showed true commitment in training and in games. He 

was hard on the ball and was always a pain for the opposing team – just like a good half should be! 

Dion also played a number of games for our Under 17 and Mens teams. Charlie Schacher, another 

half, developed his skills during the season and was able to transfer the ball well after making a 

strong tackle. 

Our fullbacks had plenty of work this year and even in the tough games never gave up. Joe Laycock 

used his height and reach to get in the face of attacking forwards and often dispossessed far more 

experienced players. Harry Doughty took on anyone and everyone and if he missed the first tackle, 

would always chase after the ballrunner to try and break down the play. Ed Noller enjoyed his 

hockey this year and pulled off some great saves in the goal mouth. 

Finally, our goalie Maddy Stewart was a real inspiration at the back. She made some amazing saves 

and always encouraged the field players to keep going and not give up. Maddy played in our Glebe 

Womens teams and is a real asset to the club. 

Although a tough season, the players and coaches have gained a lot of experience and there have 

been many fun times. Thanks to Nathan Dart and Matt Redenbach for coaching and Alan Doughty 

for managing the team. Also thanks to Alan, Tom and Rob for umpiring during the season.

Well, what a season we have had. Our first game was way back in March and we played our last 

game, the Grand Final in September. It is amazing that we started 7 months ago. During those 

months we have seen our little band of players transform into a team that loved to play hockey 

together. Just in case you were wondering, officially we had 9 girls and 5 boys. I have always said 

that I do not coach boys and girls, I coach hockey players and this team proved me right. 

Our season statistics are shown below. We were only one of two teams to finish with a goal 

difference in the positive. Our nearest rival below us had a goal difference of -6 and were 12 points 

shy of our mark.

What is not shown are the hours each athlete and their family put in for training and travel to and 

from venues each and every week. To all the parents and support crews, well done. 

Our game in the final was our finest hour, although we did not win. The lead up during the week 

could not have been worse. Six days from the big game and Elena Sheard had her finger broken 

during a school yard soccer game, one down. Bad luck ah. Look out, more to come. At the end of 

training while pushing out corners, Emma Millington twisted the wrong way and dislocated her 

knee cap, two down with 4 days to go. As we all know bad news travels in 3’s, so with 3 days to go 



Claire Doughty decides to put her arm in a cast because of a little thing called a fracture. I may just 

ban school during the lead up week to the Grand Final next year. 

So let us move to the Grand Final game itself and what a game it was. Sutherland Blue was always 

the team to beat as they had won every match during the preliminary season. We had of course 

come second and were the only team to consistently score goals against them. We knew that if we 

were going to defeat them in the Grand Final, we would have to play our best hockey. 

This is exactly what we did. It was a tough match. Claire played with her arm in a cast, which was a 

pretty good effort. To add to our woes, Dylan was smashed in the hand but true to the Howe 

lineage, shook it off and played some brilliant hockey. Mack ducked and wove the wrong way and 

had a ball smack him in the face. Blood everywhere, so we took him off, cleaned him up and could 

not stop him getting back on even if we wanted to. 

We missed some chances in attack and our defence stopped some of their certain goals. We 

frustrated them and showed them that they had a real game of hockey on their hands. The team 

lived up to what is truly the never say die Glebe spirit. It was a hot day and we played some great 

hockey. Unfortunately we could not stop the Sutho tide totally and with the little bit of space we 

gave them, they slotted 2 goals in five minutes, late in the second half, to take out the game 2-0. 

Hold your heads up high Glebe, you did us proud. 

A big, huge thank you to all our players.

Ally is the type of player you need on a team. Always keen to play and ready to go. 

Always there with a smile, Ally would work tirelessly for you. Can play a number 

of positions due to her great work rate and nice skills.

Claire was the quiet achiever of the team. Not only was she at home in attack on the 

wing, but a very good defender when called upon to play half. Her innocent smile 

beguiled her toughness as a player. Nice skills and positioned herself well in the 

circle to score some goals. 

Jamie made his home on the wing this year, with speed and determination his 

biggest assets. Jamie has the ability to beat the defence easily with some nice skills. 

Always there in the circle, Jamie scored a lot of “tap in” goals because of his 

position in attack. A productive and good season in 2009. 

Tim started slowly but as the season went on, Tim’s game lifted. As a defender, 

Tim learnt the fact that positioning was very important. His tackling and positional 

skill stopped many attacking raids by the opposition. Only one more piece of 

advice Tim, get your hair cut!!! 

Dylan filled the role of centre half this year and did so with great skill. Another 

quite achiever with a great work rate. Dylan has the ability to control the midfield 

and quickly turn our defence into attack. Good elimination skills and great vision. 

Aisling decided she wanted to play in goals this year and what a great decision that 

was. Her small stature meant that she had to work hard to cover that goals, but 

cover the goals she did. Her agility and speed saw her make several saves in a row 

and no one could score an easy goal against her. A big future in the net if she wants 

it. 

Caitlin played her heart out this year. Always there with a smile, she never gave up. 

Improved with every game and took on extra responsibilities with ease. Her skills 

developed nicely and she could hit a ball with expertise. One phrase will help her 

greatly, “don’t panic.”

We called her Sandy, but whatever you call her, her middle name was work. 

Sandy’s versatility and high work rate helped our attack and defence greatly this 

year. Her skills developed nicely during the season and her speed with the ball 

could turn our defence into attack in a blink of an eye. 

Kris was our “rock” in defence. He can read the game well and could stop the 

opposition dead in their tracks before they could mount an attack. His 

dispossessing/tackling skills developed well and there were not many players in the 

competition that could beat him cleanly “one on one”. 

Katie, “played hard, done good”. Katie would run all day and this was one of her 

strengths. A good, strong forward that dogged the defence and created a lot of 

opportunities for her high strikers. Good positioning sense in the circle gave her 

plenty of scoring opportunities. 

Emma was all finesse and skill up front in the forward line. Play her at wing or 

centre forward and if she could not score a goal herself, she would help to create 

one for somebody else. Unfortunate injury kept her out of the Grand Final but her 

hard work during the season helped to get us there. 

Mack loves to run and play hockey. Luckily for us he did both with great skill this 

season. Played mostly at inner and did his job with enthusiasm. Good skills with 

the ball in attack saw him score lots of goals. His defensive skills frustrated many 

attacking raids by the opposition. Mack, just keep running. 

Elena was a key member of our defence. Player mostly at half but had a few stints 

at full back. Her skills and vision when she had the ball at right half started a lot of 

attacking play for our team down our flanks. Her tenacity as a defender spoiled may 

opposition player runs and gave us the edge in the midfield. 

Niamh was one of our specialist wingers. Her speed to the ball gave us a lot of 

attacking raids down her wing. Her ability and strength to tackle back on the 

defence was a key to frustrating them when they tried to move the ball into attack. 

Better yet, she was always smiling as she did so. 

“Keep your head down Max”. Max was great at full back. His ability to pull off 

some amazing tackles gave our team the confidence it needed to push forward. A 

powerful hitter of the ball, Max could turn defence into attack with one mighty 

swing. A good year and well done. 

Teams at Glebe do not just happen. They are carefully nurtured by a number of people. To each and 

every parent, grandparent, brother, sister and family friend, thank you for supporting your child and 

the team that they were a part of. Thank you Mark Noller, our Junior Convenor. His tireless work 

behind the scenes makes our lives at Glebe a lot easier. To Mike Lawrence and Phil Sheard, thank 

you for your help and support of the team during a long season. To Milcho, our support crew, 

thanks mate. 

Most importantly to the players. What a wonderful bunch of kids. They gave their “all” each and 

every time they took the field. Their behaviour on and off the field was fantastic and I wish them 

the very best, not only in hockey, but in life. Have fun, play hard.

This year was different for me as I’ve never coached under 13’s before, but I think that it was a fun 

and eventful year. With 6 wins for the season and 6 looses we had an excellent year coming third 

with 2 teams dominating our division but we gave them a run for their money. The Under 13 

Strikers scored 40 goals which is an amazing amount of goals. Each player encouraged each other 

to perform to their maximum and gave 110% each week. 

We kept right up to our opposition in the semi finals but we were pipped by 2 goals. This was a 

great improvement on earlier games and the team was the real winner on the day. 

Adam Burgess – Adam was a key player in our defence; he showed good strength and confidence 

when playing back and was always in position when there was a break away. Adam is a strong 

hitter of the ball, reliable, kept good position in the field and was very constant through the year. 

Amelia Stabback – Amelia was very consistent every game and was always willing to try different 

positions. Played enthusiastically in every position she was asked to play. Amelia is confident, 

strong and has great stick skills. She has improved during the year. 

Beth Kelly – Beth worked extremely hard all year playing well at all positions where she was 

selected. Beth was a big improver throughout the season and was always willing to give good 

advice during half time. Beth was always smiling when on the field and enjoyed every game. 

Bonnie Poddelec – Bonnie has good co-ordination, is fast and fit. She played very well on the wing 

and made lots of ground throughout the year. Bonnie is an unselfish player and would always pass 

the ball if another team member was in a better position to score a goal. 

Ebony Leonello – Ebony played most of our games as goalie. Shey was cool under pressure and 

saved us many more than she let in the goal. Ebony would never get too upset when she let a goal in 

as it made her more determined to save more goals. When Ebony played on the field she used her 

speed and tackling skills to get the ball and distribute to our inners and forwards. 

Erin Topfer – Erin never stopped trying all year. When she was asked to play another position, she

did so with no problems. Erin is a team player who has contributed in every game. She was very 

consistent throughout the season with excellent vision and good skills. 

Heidi Doran – Heidi was always willing to help out in the team discussion on who we had to mark 

on the opposition. She has great enthusiasm, always willing to learn new skills and played wherever 

she was needed. Heidi tried hard in the positions she was given and will continue to improve in the 

years to come. 

Jack Crampton – Ladd – Jack has enjoyed his year where he played most of his season at right 

half. He has good skills and coordination. The second half of the season, Jack’s tackle improved out 

of sight, which helped the team transfer into attack more quickly. Well done Jack, good luck for the 

future. 

Joshua Norman – Josh had speed to burn on the wing and used it well in attack. His positional 

play saw him create headaches for the opposition. Although Josh did not score many goals during 

the season he created a lot of opportunities for the rest of the team. 

Lachlan White – Lockie had a very consistent year being strong in defence and able to switch the 

ball into attack. Lockie was a vital part of our team and he was able to do what was needed of him. 

For his first year he has very good skills and an understanding of how to play the game; he will only 

continue to improve. 

Maddi Lapstun - Maddi had a very consistent year being strong in defence and able to switch the 

ball into attack. She was a vital part of our team and she was able to do whatever was needed of her. 

Maddi has good stick skills and will continue to improve. 

Matias Avellanal – Matias has great ball control, skills and pace. He is an extremely valuable 

player covering as much ground as possible. Matias was always looking for the ball from the inners 

and positioned himself well in attack. He showed great ability to score most of our goals this 

season. 

Milena De Silva – Milena was a key player; solid in defence and always working hard. She is very 

confident and strong, which are two things that are needed to be a successful back. I wish her luck 

for the future. 

Mollie Beehan – Mollie consistently put into practice things that she has learnt at training and was 

always strong in defence. Mollie had a very successful season; she would always put 100% into her 

game and was always involved in the game looking for the ball and making good leads. 

Sascha Swaraj – Sascha’s ability to play a number of positions showed us what an important 

player she was to the team. Whether she was on the wing, half, inner or even goalie, her 

determination and skill never let us down. Sascha has lots of energy and is always willing to learn. 

Tiffany Borgese – Tiffany was a very strong player for the team this year, she never let other 

players push her off the ball. She played many positions which shows what a versatile player she is. 

Tiffany has good fitness which shows during her game she can run all day. Well done on a great 

year Tiffany. 

Parents - Thank you for your vocal effort thought out the year and providing encouragement each 

week.

This season we had the task of defending our title, however we came up against a bigger, tougher 

opposition in the Grand Final and were unable to hold out. 

The group consisted of very young, very craZZZy players, many of whom still have another two 

more years in the under 11’s, and with only two players having played in this Division, we had a 

major task at hand. Each player has skills greater than the normal U11 player and considering their 

age the U11’s will be very strong in seasons to come. Watch out Sutherland! 

We started the season off with an unbeaten streak of seven games; unfortunately many of these 

results were draws. The sequence of draws right at the start of the season was the deciding factor in 

our second place finish after the round games. We lost the Major Semi Final and salvaged a well 

earned draw in the Preliminary Final to obtain a well deserved spot in the Grand Final. 

As always it was a great pleasure to coach the team this season, and I hope these players continue to 

play hockey for Glebe in the future. 

I would like to thank Manager Shanti, “Mum” for being my parrot when the players could not hear 

me on the field, Geoff Baird for being our umpire every week, David Pritchard for assisting with 

pre-match warm ups and the other parents for their assistance throughout the year.

Sam Alexander (Fullback) - he always appeared at the opportune moment, either in time to clear 

the ball, make a tackle or intercept a pass. He was solid at the back and would either let the ball past 

or the player... but not both. 

Angus Baird (Wing/Half) - initially started as a half, but his speed was put to better use on the 

wing. He gave his opposite number a terribly hard job and always played with great enthusiasm. 

Calam Baird (Centre Forward) - was our smallest and youngest player on the team, but don’t let 

his size fool you, he has many skills in his bag of tricks, one of them being a wicked hit. One to 

look out for in the future years. 

Jack Beehan (Goalie) - Mr No Fear, has developed immensely over the season, with some 

outstanding performances in the late round games and the finals. The scores would have been 

considerably different if it wasn’t for him. He made an incredible one on one sliding save to keep a 

draw in order to advance to the Grand Final. 

Alanna Howe (Half) - has a great eye for the ball, which was put to good use in defence, with 

many a great tackle. But what distinguished her was her marking ability - the poor opposition 

winger! Incredibly this was her first year of hockey too, Looking forward to seeing her in the future. 

Jackson Howe (Fullback) - was our resident full back with Sam, who could pull off a goal saving 

tackle. He developed a robust hit over the course of the season, and a solid understanding of key 

defensive concepts. 

Ryan Howe (Wing) - a key member of our forward line (top goal scorer), a formidable finisher he 

developed immensely throughout the season. Each week his mantra was “trap before you shoot”. 

Hugo Hughes (Inner) - was one of the experienced players on the team, and it was displayed 

through his knowledge of the game, and his positive enthusiasm towards the team. 

Jack May (Inner) - Chief Annoyer, Jack constantly ran, caused trouble in both attack and defence, 

whether it be a goal or frustrating the opposition. 

Brayden Morrow (Centre Half) – Brayden, another experienced player, played the pivotal role of 

centre half this year. His distribution of the ball was superb through his phenomenal hit which could 

slice an opposing team in half. 

Miriam Pritchard (Centre Forward) - on her day she could run riot through the opposition 

defence, has great hand eye coordination and her passing to players in space greatly improved 

towards the end of the season. I hope she continues to play. 

Tim Pritchard (Utility) - possesses a tremendous amount of skill, from stick work to the ability to 

adjust to any position. He can literally play everywhere from the forward line to the halves and 

even fullback. A great asset to any team. 

Alice Schacher (Half) - her positional play, ball control and tackling improved every single week, 

and this was evident in the Final games. It was a great pleasure to see her develop, and I hope she 

continues to play.

2009 started with Tom and Eliza being introduced to a team of fresh-faced U11s. Despite a lack of 

training the team made great progress and gained momentum developing well throughout the 

season. 

Queenie – Always enthusiastic, Queenie was a delight to coach. She has a great attitude to the 

game and a fantastic sense of humour. She played hard all season and should be proud of her 

efforts. 

James – We were always overjoyed when Coops, our pint sized propeller, made it to hockey. 

Although he missed some games, he more than made up for any absences with his never say die 

attitude, which culminated in a goal. 

Joel – Joel was a revelation. The winner of our most improved award. Joel started out meek and 

timid and finished up doing blazing length of the field hits and tackling anyone and everything. 

Improving in every aspect of his game, Joel had a great season. 

Alysha – Tenacious in attack and defence, Alysha showed an understanding of the game beyond 

her years. We’re excited to see her develop next year into an even better player. 

Lindon – Like others in the team, Lindon showed dedication playing at any chance he could, 

despite other commitments. The last game he played was by far his best, showing how valuable a 

player he can be.

Maykooth – The eternal full back, every game Maykooth would tell us about her yearning to play 

other positions, yet through some undeniable force she always ended up at the back. Maykooth’s 

defensive finesse saved the team many a goal and she had an impressive season. 

Izzy – Sorely missed on her European tanning session, Izzy proved to be an integral part of the 

forward line. A pleasure to coach, she was an asset to the team. 

Darcy – Darcy our superstar forward with a kick ass hit, we didn’t see as much of him as we 

would’ve liked but when he played he did some great things for the team including scoring our first 

goal of the season. 

Ana – Good enthusiasm in attack, Ana showed great potential and was our leading goal scorer. 

With her competitive nature and skills to burn she earned herself the award for best forward. 

Nicholas – The ever talkative, excitable Nicholas! Always ready to play, Nicholas never stopped 

running and always had his ears open for good advice. 

Priya – Thanks to Priya, our team had a mascot, her lovable ferret. Enthusiastic and a solid player 

she epitomised her mascot with the development of her tenacious attack and defence skills. 

Callan – Winner of the best back award, Callan was the rock that held our defence together. 

Always willing to quickly capitalise on a free hit, Callan had a fantastic season and can look 

forward to a solid future in hockey. 

Jane – Winner of the best and fairest award, Jane played every game with the utmost 

sportsmanship. Almost scoring a goal, Jane was outstanding in both defence and attack and had a 

great season. 

Taillah – One of the few to play almost every position. Taillah excelled at the front with a hand in a 

number of the goals. A great overall season we hope to see Taillah back again in 2010. 

Zoe –Zoe is one of the giggliest hockey players we’ve ever met and her high spirits helped her to 

develop and improve over the season. By the end Zoe began to shine with some outstanding runs 

and tackles. 

Macy – a helping hand whenever we were short, Macy’s contribution was greatly appreciated. 

Special thanks to our team managers Maria and Andrew and also to Graham who’s umpiring skills 

made for a fair season for all. 

The team developed in confidence over the year and every player should give himself or herself a 

pat on the back for a job well done. On a personal note, we had a great time and hope to see 

everyone back next year for a season of hockey madness.

To begin, I loved coaching the 2009 Strikers. I believe I had the privilege to coach the best group of 

kids in all of Australia. 

We started the season looking very hopeful for a premiership. I had coached Nina, Frankie, 

Sophie and Tom the previous year, and was amazed at their level of improvement. Then we had 

Renee, Larse, Pineapple and Banana coming up from Minkey. And also a few new kids who had 

never picked up a hockey stick, Jonah, Maddie, George, Boo and Dyson. Finally we had Una who 

had played for the Hornets the previous year. We had a champion team. 

We were really unfortunate during the season not to come out with a win, but despite the 

score each week the Strikers gave it their best each game. I think it’s sometimes hard to have 

perspective when you’re losing each week by a few goals. However, the kids have really developed 

their game since the beginning of the season. 

I really enjoyed convincing the kids to tuck their shirts in at the beginning of the match and 

reminding them at half time. I enjoyed the pre match war cry that started as a whisper and lead into 

a scream, “strike, strike, STRIKE!” etc. 

Most of all I enjoyed the camaraderie. Early in the season George was just finding his feet. He had a 

hard time one game from some kids. On the Sunday he got a call from Una who was keen to go 

down to the park and have a hit. This was the attitude of the team, everyone had a go rather than 

putting the best players on for the whole game. I had a great season and I hope the team did too, 

because we not only improved our game but we made friends for life. 

I want to thank Bruce for all his help. I really couldn’t have organised a thing without him. He 

padded up the kids, helped at training and had match cards each game. I also want to thank the 

mums and dads for their support. Getting up on a Saturday is hard enough for me, but I can only 

imagine the effort you all put in, so thank you. Finally thank you Strikers for all your time and love

for hockey. We had a great season and I hope you all return next year. 

Maddie Allen had never played hockey before the 2009 season. She showed true skill, in defence 

during the second half of the season with her buddy Renee. They were good at chatting and 

defending the goals. 

Dyson Davis had never played hockey before also, but had a great first season. He moved all over 

the pitch, from defence to attack. He has a great attitude and really showed potential from the first 

match, when he was awarded player of the match. 

Litiana Banana Field had been playing Minkey with me in the prior season. She also stepped in a 

few times to help the Hornets out. Litiana was excellent this season as she scored our three goals 

and found her feet in attack. 

Larse Frissel-Thomas had been playing Minkey for a few years and was keen to step up to Under 

11s. He joined us a little late during the season but was a great addition to the side. He has started 

very young and has lots of time to develop his hockey. 

Nina Frissel-Thomas started playing Under 11s last year and was blossoming into a great player. 

This year when I saw Nina play pre season I was shocked with her improvement. I was convinced 

that she had spent the summer in a Dutch hockey camp. 

Frankie Howard-White was another star this season. Last year Frankie had just started her hockey 

career, this year she was all over the pitch. Her involvement was inspiring and she really put in the 

effort every game. 

George Howard-White aka Georgie Porgey was a star with the ladies! George had never played 

before and early on in the season he hadn’t found his grounding. By the end of the season he was 

making amazing tackles, taking free hits and helping me coach. 

Tom Keir was a long time Minkey and started playing Under 11s the year before. He played centre 

half most of this season and really showed off his ability. I really enjoyed coaching Tom, and was 

eager to hear his analysis of the game at half time. 

Renee Langenheim had played Minkey prior to this season. She teamed up with her friend Maddie 

in defence. She was really impressive in the backs, especially when she was up against some larger 

competition and came out on top. 

Yasmine Boo Reddy started the season without any hockey experience. She was a delight to coach 

and I think she really developed throughout the season. Her enthusiasm was encouraging; I clearly 

remember the night Boo came to training on Federal in the rain. 

Una Stevens is something special. When she enters a game she brings a spirit that makes the whole 

team lift. It is not about winning for Una, it is about having fun. She has the skill to play in the 11A 

Redbacks, but was determined to play with her friends, which highlights her mentality. 

Virisilia Pineapple Taufa played Minkey the previous season. She was getting to old for Minkey, 

so it was great to see her play with bigger kids. She had a few blinder runs up forward, reading the 

play and waiting patiently for the ball to pop out. 

Jonah Van Wachem had never played before, but has hockey in his blood. He also played AFL on 

Saturday and we missed his control of the ball when he couldn’t make games. Jonah has real skill 

and control of the ball and I can’t wait to see him play in a few years. 

Sophie White has played hockey with me for some time. I have always enjoyed her company and 

am amazed each season when she grasps the positions. When Sophie played wing, she would have 

spectacular runs down the pitch creating real opportunities.

Mark Paterson 

Glebe 2008 First Grade captain Mark Paterson was selected this year to play for the 

Kookaburras, Australia’s national men’s hockey team. Mark follows in the footsteps 

of other Glebe players to have played for their country including Triple Olympians 

Ken Wark Jnr and Pat Nilan. He comes from a famous Glebe family and has played 

his entire junior hockey with the club including minkey, 212 junior games and 170 

senior games – our first minkey player to become a Kookaburra!
