Greenhead news NEWSLETTER ISSUE 15 Winter 2010 SPORT NEWS : SPORT NEWS : SPORT Running Club: Leeds Abbey Dash 10k organised by Age UK: Greenhead’s Enrichment Running Club joined over 8,500 runners to participate in the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k event organised by Age UK. The Running Club 2010 was established in September, comprising staff and students who train weekly to enjoy the benefits of running. Members of the club vary in experience, from beginners to club runners. Congratulations to Jodie Pollard, who achieved an excellent time of 44 minutes. The fastest female finish time in the whole competition was 37 minutes. Jack Paige’s impressive finish time of 45 minutes was also superb. Further congratulations should be extended towards students Daniel Edmondson, Ella Woodward and Patrick Render alongside staff members Julie Davies, Anna Shaw and Liz Bowen who completed the event in speedy style. Netball Report: What a start to the season! The 1st team have won their first two Superleague fixtures against Gateshead College and Queen Elizabeth’s, Darlington. Four of the squad were picked to represent the North East – Leah Collins, Sasha Buchanan, Halina Dawson and Hannah Priestley. Final trials for the National Squad are in December. Captain Sabrina Miles led her team well in the British Colleges National qualifiers when Greenhead were crowned Yorkshire champions! Bring on the next round! The 2nd team are unbeaten so far, and are sitting at the top of the British Colleges West Yorkshire league where they play other colleges’second teams. Captain Lucy Foreman and vice Katie Franklin have led their team well not only to secure the wins but also to win every game by a significant margin! Well done girls! SY Hockey Report: A fantastic season so far with both Men’s, Women’s and Mixed teams excelling in all competitions. Six students Claire Higginson, Ailish Hendry, Molly Timms, Ollie James, Will Jones and Sam King have gained places on the BCS North Hockey Squad and are attending final trials for the full British Colleges squad in December. The Girls’ squad for the first time in the history of Greenhead, have won through to the Northern Finals of the National Schoolgirls Hockey Championship. They beat Rishworth, Silcoates, GSAL, Bradford Grammar and last year’s national winners, Wakefield Girls’ in the first round; and the winners of the Humberside tournament, Scarborough College, in the second round. Both the Men’s and Women’s teams have qualified to represent the North East Colleges at the BCS finals in April. Once again no other colleges in the North East are strong enough to challenge the squad and these victories reinforce the fact that Greenhead is the strongest college in the North East region for Hockey! ASW 1st XI Football: We were fortunate to get a very good intake of new students this year. Consequently the 1st team squad is very inexperienced with 12 out of the 16 being A1 students. However the team’s results have been excellent so far with the only defeat coming at Balby Carr played on an all-weather pitch which we had not been informed about and we lost our Captain Tom Gledhill to injury after only 5 minutes. The players are convinced revenge will be had in the return fixture. Notre Dame were defeated 7-0 and Pontefract 4-2 but the best win came against a strong Leeds City 6-4, as we trailed 4-2 at one stage of the game. In the Cup we progressed against Notre Dame 4-1 and look forward to the next round. A number of our players have been selected to represent West Yorkshire and the future looks bright as we will have so many A2 players next year. RF 2nd XI Football: This year’s 2nd XI team consists mostly of A1 students and it has made an encouraging, if somewhat inconsistent, start. There have been good league victories against Leeds City College (2-1) and Pontefract New College (1-0) but some disappointing defeats in friendlies against Shelley College in the first game of the season (3-1) and against Wyke College, Hull (2-0). The team has some very skilful and enterprising players, but is usually younger and smaller than its opponents, which was exposed by letting a three-goal lead slip in the game against Balby Carr College, Doncaster to draw 4-4 and in a heavy defeat against Selby College. Despite these ups and downs it has been an enjoyable year so far and the team holds a lot of promise for future success. MT World Challenge Report: We have two second year teams working towards their expedition to Mongolia, the land of Genghis Khan. Besides completing a two day training expedition in Buxton, in preparation for next year’s trip, the teams have been fundraising by selling raffle tickets, with a first prize of a skiing holiday for two at a top French resort. The first years are preparing for their expedition to Ecuador and one team are running a tuck shop on Fridays in college. Both first and second year team members are selling Christmas cards and more fundraising events are being planned throughout the academic year. Whilst on expedition, all teams will be involved in a week-long project to help children in orphanages or schools. BF 6 www.greenhead.ac.uk
Greenhead news Greenhead says ‘Benvenuti’ to Native Italians: July 2010 saw the arrival of 30 Italians and their English exchange partners in college. With the aim of improving their language skills, Greenhead’s Italian students took the guests on a tour of the Art department, Library, Science classrooms and Language Labs, narrating each area in Italian. The Italians asked students about college life, their subjects and Huddersfield, delighted to see young people studying their language. Over lunch, the students learnt about the guests’ family and their town (near Lake Como) and shared information about their own family and day-today life. Later, the students also got the chance to listen to some traditional Italian music as the group transformed itself into a choir and rehearsed songs they would perform to their English partners that night. The visit was a great way for our Italian students to get more speaking practice and test out their skills on native Italians. By Hannah Mundell Enriching a Society of Debate: Whether social, political, or religious the subjects are always diverse, interesting and some controversial in the Debating Society. Term 1 saw that ‘the House believes that achieving socialism can only be gained through evolutionary means’,’ that cannabis should be legalised’,’ that God has neither a predominantly negative or positive effect on society’ and that ‘the decimating armed forces should be cut’. Always a diverse range of arguments presented to the society upon which opinions are split; there are four main speeches that are given to the ‘floor’ by two distinctive groups in which one argues for, the other against the chosen topic of that week. The Debating Society is an Enrichment course that develops confidence, knowledge and key skills in a way that is fun and entertaining, because no matter what your interests are there will always be a week where there is a topic that you can get involved in-but if not then there is always plenty of opportunity for you to suggest an argument/topic for a particular week. Throughout the year further topics are to be debated in the society such as ‘The Benefits of Democracy’, ‘University Tuition Fees’ and most importantly ‘Peanut Butter: Crunchy or Smooth?’ By Megan Sunderland NEWSLETTER ISSUE 15 Winter 2010 Paris: Business and Pleasure During PaWs week 2010, Business students were given the opportunity to undertake a four day project which firstly took us to Kent where we visited Shepherd Neame, ‘Britain’s Oldest Brewer.’ This was in order to experience and appreciate not only a productive Pictured are the PaWs week 2010 Business students. element of a business but also its history, the overall structure of the business, and product marketing. We then travelled to France where we visited a glass factory, Cristal d’Arques, which allowed us to grasp an understanding of both a working environment and again, appreciate the complexity behind their production as well as learn about the business’ roots and background. The opportunity to visit these businesses allowed us to utilise the knowledge that we have gained from our AS Business/Economics courses and adapt it to a real life business situation. Whilst in Paris we were also able to appreciate the mind blowing architectural brilliance of the Eiffel Tower which, since being opened to the public in 1889, has welcomed over 200 million visitors. During the four days, we feel we learnt a great deal about extremely diverse businesses as well as being given the opportunity to appreciate some of the most prestigious landmarks in France. We valued the project and knew that we were taking a lot more knowledge away with us from this experience than we ever imagined possible. By Chantelle Waller “World Challenge to Peru” During the summer two teams of students departed on a World Challenge expedition to Peru. During the trip, they trekked along the famous Inca Trail all the way to Machu Pictured are a student team with some of the local children in one of the villages which the party camped in. Picchu, as well as visiting Lake Titicaca to help build a community library on one of the islands. After the hard work was over, relaxation was spent white water rafting and relaxing at the beach.
