From the Director:
This week my message is about teaching, but it is not about
teaching here at ISS. As many of our parents are aware, every
February I go to several large international teacher recruiting
fairs that are held in the United Kingdom and the United
States. The combination of the fine teachers that we hire here
in Norway, (we advertise open positions through www.nav.
no—the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Administration), and
the ones that I hire internationally provide the education for
your children on a daily basis.
Again this year, we have been fortunate to hire some excellent
teachers who will join us at the beginning of the new school
year. I am grateful that so many wonderful educators are keen
to join our staff here. But teaching here at the International
School of Stavanger is not the main topic of my message today,
but rather a need on the part of our sister international schools
around the world.
What is becoming increasingly a challenge for many other
international schools is that the number of teachers keen to
work overseas has been decreasing over the past years while
the number of new international schools has been increasing.
There are now approximately 4,000 international schools
spread throughout the globe, with the highest incidence of
new schools being established in the United Arab Emirates
and China. Basic mathematics reminds us that more schools
and fewer teachers is a calculation that is doomed to create
classrooms full of children without the teachers they need.
At a meeting of approximately 300 international heads during
the recruiting event, we brainstormed on a variety of different
solutions to the problem. Many international schools in
fantastic locations are feeling a real shortage in finding the
teaching staff that they need. One thing that we all promised
to do was to come back to our home schools and get the word
out within our own school communities of the shortage. I
estimate that probably every adult reading this message knows
of around 15 individuals who might be potential international
teachers. You have friends, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles
and former teachers who very well might love working in an
international school!
They might include:
1.
2.
3.
Teachers in mid-career in their home country
Teachers fresh out of university, even with no experience
Teachers taking early retirement
Skiing at Gullingen takes focus and concentration
2 · The Informer 26 March 2008
Think about the following points as well:
4. It is a myth that international schools are more likely to
hire US/UK/Canadian/Australian teachers. Scandinavian
citizens, for example, are a highly prized, but rarely found
nationality in international schools around the world. The
same for other nationalities--they are needed and wanted.
5. Some schools in some countries are even abandoning
teacher certification, but rather just looking for a good
bachelor’s degree.
6. I saw plenty of heads of excellent schools this year who
were going home from the recruiting fairs empty-handed
and that is a new phenomenon.
www.isstavanger.no

7. It isn’t just grim schools in grim places that are having
trouble--many fine schools in Europe as well as other
continents were coming up short at the February
recruitment fairs.
8. Many schools list their openings on their websites and
accept open applications.
9. The concept of teaching internationally is often a very
unknown concept—many teachers do not know the
wonderful opportunities that exist outside their home
countries.
10. The kind of student found in classrooms at ISS—curious,
engaged, well-behaved—are typical of the population that
most international schools serve. It is “pure teaching” at
its best!
The following sources may be useful to learn more about
working in international schools—feel free to go to the
electronic version of this Informer on our website and send the
Of course, I would be happy to answer any additional
questions that anyone reading this might have. Thanks for
remembering that I am sharing this not searching for teachers
for ISS here in Stavanger—we have found what we need—but
rather on behalf of other schools in other countries.
Having a career in international education has been a
wonderful privilege—plus lots of fun and fulfillment—for
my family. Perhaps someone reading this article will think
to themselves, “Why, I know just who to forward this
information to.” By all means, do so!
Thank you--Our sister international schools around the world
thank you, too!
And finally, on a note connected to the success that I had in
hiring new teachers to come to ISS in August, I will mention
that we will be looking to help our new staff find housing
this summer. At this point, I believe we will need nine
(9) furnished flats/houses in early August. If you know of
someone who might have something they would be interested
in renting out, thank you for calling Liv Høie at 51 554300 or
sending her an e-mail at: lhoie@isstavanger.no
Liv does a fantastic job in helping to organize the housing for
our new staff. The nine include two couples with children, one
couple without children and six single teachers. Additionally,
our new high school principal, Gareth Jones and his wife and
two young daughters are coming to visit Stavanger for a week
in early May, and I am looking for a flat we can rent for them
for the week they are here—hotels are fine, but a flat would be
perfect. Thanks for any tips you might have!
Congratulations to middle school student Shruti Kar Ray!
Shruti, a talented classical guitar player was the subject of a
wonderful article on March 13 in Stavanger Aftenblad. She
has won several national music competitions and her dedicated
two hours a day of practicing is paying wonderful dividends.
As you undoubtedly know from prior issues of the
Informer ISS played host to Mr. Colin Sullivan,
Regional Security Officer for the U.S. Embassy in
Oslo, as he offered workshops on internet security
to both parents and staff members. The turnout
was good as a total of approximately 70 people
availed themselves of Mr. Sullivan’s expertise
throughout the day.
Key points from the internet security workshop:
While I cannot hope to capture the entirety of the
workshop experience for you here, I can at least hit
the high points. What follows is a list of some of
the most important points that Mr. Sullivan made
on that day, plus a list of internet resources. Some
of the resources are those listed by Mr. Sullivan,
others I have printed before and still others are
new. Enjoy and stay safe online.
”
1.
2.
3.
4.
Make sure that the computer that your child uses is
in a public place in the house, with the screen facing
the centre of the room. Mr. Sullivan was emphatic
that this was the number one most important
piece of advice that he had to offer that day.
Investigate what social networking sites (e.g.
MySpace, Facebook, etc.) your child uses. Go
online. Check them out. Make sure that your child’s
site is secure, the profile (the personal information
that they post) is narrow and that there is nothing
there to identify them. They should not post their
full name, address, school they attend, etc. Also talk
with them about who they let into their site. Just
because someone sends them a message asking to
join their site, does not mean that they should let them
join. You, however, should definitely be on their site.
Install high-quality, proprietary anti-virus and antispyware
software and keep it updated. Do not ever
click on the “click here for free spyware solution”
button and be extremely suspicious of anything
that is “free” on the internet. The reality is that it
will probably cost you a lot more than you think!
Install parental control software. You will find links
below to help you in your search. Parental controls
are also often found on televisions, DVD players
and gaming consoles. If you are unsure of whether
something is appropriate for your child’s age, check
out the Commonsensemedia.org site listed below.
5.
Beware of “social engineering” frauds and scams.
A legitimate bank or credit card company will not
ask you to enter all of your account details through
an e-mail link. There really isn’t a bank in Africa
waiting to pay you $25,000 for holding money for a
week. Free software or warning pop-ups that appear
in your web browser almost certainly contain spyware
or a Trojan horse that will take up residence on your
computer and broadcast your personal information
to its creator. When in doubt, make inquiries. It
is far better to do nothing than the wrong thing.
The internet seems ephemeral, but in reality everything
you post will last essentially forever. You cannot unpost
something on the internet. The very best that
you can do is to remove it from that point forward.
The reason is that the major search engines create
an image of the internet ever few days and hold it in
cache. This allows people to go back in time and see
what was on the web on any particular day in the past.
To see what I mean go to the “Wayback Machine”
at http://www.archive.org/web/web.php and plug in
something like www.cnn.com As you see, once it’s there
it’s always there. Combine that with a growing number
of universities and companies that do web searches on
candidates, and you can see why it is very important to
make sure that the image you project online is the image
that you wish to be stuck with forever.
T.A. Hennard
Finally, and probably most importantly, make conversations about internet and personal security a
regular part of your family life. When a suspicious looking pop-up appears on your computer screen, call
your kids over and explain why you think it is dangerous and what you are going to do about it. Get
on Facebook with your child and show them some of the potential problems that they could encounter.
Surf some of the links below with them. Outside they might roll their eyes and say they are bored, but
inside they will understand that you really care about them and their safety.
The Erasmus Programme was set up by the European Union
in the UK have never filled those available for them abroad.
A study by the Higher Education Funding Council into
why numbers have been decreasing since 1998 found that
finance, worry about studying a foreign language and fear of
the unknown were the main concerns. This year the British
Government decided to waive the new annual tuition fees
Dear Parent,
The fight against tuberculosis has seen
a reduction of people who are infected
every year. It will be many years however
before TB is eradicated. The Norwegian
Health Policy is to vaccinate our young
people in the 9th grade.
BCG vaccination is NOT compulsory,
parents can choose if they would like
their child to be vaccinated.
HOWEVER, Montoux Testing is
compulsory!
Most parents are familiar with the TB
test, please do not hesitate to contact me
about any questions you may have.
We will look at the test 3days later to
determine if it is positive or negative.
Every student will be seen and the test
evaluated, the parents are always notified
if we find an unusual result.
BCG Vaccine is given in the left upper
arm, after a few weeks a little spot or
liquid sore will appear on the vaccination
sight. It is not painful and will heal
within a short time. As long as there is
liquid coming out of the sore a plaster
should be applied.
No swimming until the sore has healed.
We also offer a Polio booster vaccine at
the same time
Eric is fine-tuning his form before
the swimming tournament in
Luxembourg
The days become longer and the school year gets shorter. The
last round of parent-student/teacher conferences is over, the
Easter holiday is now behind us and next week sees the end
of the third quarter of the 2007-2008 school year. It has
been a busy few weeks since the last Informer with an internet
security workshop for parents and staff (please see the write-up
earlier in this issue), conferences, the Narnia musical, a NECIS
basketball tournament, an 8 th grade transition meeting and
leirskole information evening and the second annual “Viking
King” High School event.
The truly amazing thing is that things are going to become even
busier in the weeks to come.
As I mentioned before, the third quarter ends next week and
grade reports will come out soon. The School for Life dinner will
be held here at ISS at 1900 on Saturday, March 29 th . If you have
not bought your tickets for that gala event, please do so quickly.
The food and company will be great and you could not ask for
a better cause than supporting the School for Life orphanage in
Thailand.
The following week sees the 8 th grade saying goodbye for a while
as they head to Trysil for their leirskole, where they will learn
about cross-country and alpine skiing, finding their way in the
great outdoors and working together as a team.
On the weekend of April 4 th and 5 th all of the “usual suspects”
in the High School will be found right here at ISS at the annual
Student Council Lock-In activity. It is always an event that is
worth losing a bit of sleep over!
Things do not slow down then either. On the next weekend we
bid bon voyage to our swim team as they head to Luxembourg
while those of us who remain behind will have the chance to
participate in the Parent Association Orienteering activity
Middle and High School News
on Saturday, April 12 th . The Middle and High School Band
concert will be in the theatre on the evening of April 16 th , and
finally we will be hosting the High School International School
Theatre Association (ISTA) festival right here in Stavanger from
April 17 th to 20 th .
Do not be surprised if someone asks you for a helping hand at
some point in the next few weeks because there is a lot going
on.
My public service message for this Informer has to do with the
buses. The students are doing well but I would appreciate it if
you would remind them that food and drink are not allowed
on the buses and that they should remain seated, with their
seatbelts fastened, until the bus comes to a halt at their stop.
As you may have noticed, there is more and more traffic on the
roads of Stavanger and we all want to keep our students safe—if
sometimes only from themselves and their youthful sense of
invincibility!
As a final word, I hope that you have all read the write-up on
the internet security workshop earlier in this issue. I appreciate
all of you who were able to attend on the day and especially
Mr. Colin Sullivan, who really put on an informative and
entertaining workshop. We carry his message and teachings
to the students through our work with them in the regular
classroom, homerooms and advisories but that is no substitute
for hearing the same message from the most trusted people in
their lives, you parents. You might not think they are listening
to you, but they truly are. And the main message that they will
hear when you take the time to talk with them about issues like
internet safety is that you understand and, more importantly,
you care.
Middle School News and Events
Welcome back after the Easter break, I hope you all had an
enjoyable and relaxing holiday. Quarter 4 is just around the
corner with lots of activities and events are planned. Several of
them will be outlined in this article.
Mi d d l e Sc h o o l Music a l – ‘Na r n i a’
As you can see from the beautiful picture on the front cover, the
Middle School Musical has come and gone. With over 90% of
our students involved in the production in some way, this event
exemplifies how teamwork, cooperation and hard work can pay
off! The students were wonderful and, together with numerous
Middle School faculty members, produced an extremely
memorable event. Congratulations to all involved.
As one major event in the Middle School ends, several other
events are only just beginning! Here are some details:
Ru g b y f o r Fu n !
The practices for rugby will take place on Monday and
Thursday from 3:30 until 5:30pm. This is an opportunity for
both boys and girls to come along and try something new and
have fun at the same time!
Tr ac k a n d Fi e l d /At h l e t i c s
The practices for track and field will take place on Tuesday,
Wednesday and Friday from 3:30 until 5:30. This is an
opportunity to try a variety of track events – 100m, 200m
400m, 800m 1500m and hurdles as well as some field events
– high jump, long jump, and triple jump, shot putt, discus and
javelin.
So f t b a l l
The practices for softball will take place on Monday and
Thursday from 3:30 until 5pm. Boys and girls welcome! Come
along and give it a try - even if you have never played before!
8 t h Gr a d e Le i r s k o l e
Students and teachers in 8 th grade will be travelling to Trysil
(Eastern Norway) for their annual leirskole/outdoor education
trip – a week of teamwork, cooperation and physical education.
The trip departs on Sunday, March 30 th and returns on
Friday, April 4 th .
NECIS Sw i m m i n g
There are many Middle School students currently attending
swimming training every Tuesday and Friday. Some of these
students will be travelling to compete in the NECIS swimming
competition in Luxembourg from April 10 th –April 13 th . We
wish them all the very best of luck!
Q3 Re c o g n i t i o n Ce r e m o n y
You are all cordially invited to celebrate all the achievements
and events of the middle school during 3 rd quarter. There will
be entertainment, student recognition and a picture slide show
from Q3. The ceremony takes place on Wednesday, April 16 th
starting at 13:50 in the theatre.
Ho m e r o o m
The Advisory theme for March has been ‘Cooperation and
Teamwork’ and we will be moving onto the theme of ‘Coping
with Change and Communication’ during April.
Every middle school student will be experiencing some form of
change as we approach the end of the year: grade to grade, 8 th to
9 th grade, moving schools and/or saying goodbye to friends. All
students will be given the opportunity to discuss their feelings
at this emotional time and be given strategies to help them cope
with their feelings.
The 8 th grade students have been busy with the transition process
from 8 th to 9 th grade.
In addition, the 8 th grade students will shortly begin an intensive
‘study skills’ course, in preparation for their 8 th grade exams
in at the beginning of May (May 2 nd , May 5 th May 6 th and May
7th.).
These study sessions will include:
• How I study and How I Study best.
• Following Written Directions.
• Test-taking Skills and Tips.
• Preparing for Objective Questions.
• Memorization Skills.
• Preparing for Essay Questions.
Hopefully, these sessions will give them the opportunity to
develop good organisational and study habits which will help
them during their High School years’.
Ca l e n d a r Ev e n t s in Apr i l a n d Ma y
Please take some time to study the Middle School calendar of
events for the next few weeks. There is one change I would like
to draw your attention to. The date and time for the MS dance in
May has been changed to May 16 th from 18:00 until 21:00.
Please contact me at any time if you have any questions or
concerns.
The snow fell in heavy flakes
as students worked on skiing skills while skiing up and down a hill
with a variety of challenges
that met everyone’s
Sunniva is having a breather in the snow
I felt the mood of the Brueghel painting Vogelknip
(Winter Landscape with Bird Trap) come to life
before my eyes. Gathered around a campfire built
on a mound of snow and in a semi-circle of snow
wall we had built, our instructor at Gullingen
Leirskule and Grade 5 students acted out a role play
to learn about first aid in the cold. Students drank
hot chocolate from flasks and ate sandwiches they
had grilled over the fire while sled dogs waited
patiently for students to pet them. We had skied
almost an hour to get to this meadow covered in a
meter of snow, a long hour for those who had first
put skis on their feet three days before. The snow
fell in heavy flakes as students worked on skiing
skills while skiing up and down a hill with a variety
of challenges that met everyone’s ability level.
Even the most accomplished skiers took a tumble
an abrupt rise. It was fun! Thank you to students
who took such a positive attitude to the challenges
Reading Day, 11 April.
As a way of adding emphasis to reading valuable
to all disciplines, we have designated 11 April as
a special day where all subjects will incorporate
some element of reading into the curriculum. It
is also meant to celebrate the reading efforts the
children have taken as they focused on reading
during the incentive sponsored by our ISS Parent
Association. Here are a few special elements to
look forward to.
Children should feel free to dress in
What happens in a “normal” week in the
Primary School?
From the outside, it may seem that all the activities
of the Primary School during the school day and
after 15:15 are built in order from chaos. That
orchestration is due to many staff working in
harmony to build diverse and differentiated learning
for the students. Staff members arrive sometime after
6, often for early morning meetings or preparing for
classes.
The cafeteria staff get busy very early to be ready
for the first break with High School. Children in
extended care arrive as early as 7:45. Buses usually
arrive sometime after 8:15 and hopefully before
8:25, and classes start at 8:30.
The drop-off area and lobby start to hum with voices
eager for school about 8:00. Classes are in session
with breaks for a snack, lunch and three recesses
outside before getting ready for the end of the day
at 15:15.
After school you will find children in various
activities depending on the day: language lessons in
German, Dutch and Italian, scouts, extended care,
drama, sports, extra tutorial help from teachers.
Often, teachers stay into late hours to coach, work
on projects and prepare for the next school day.
your children to bed at their normal times so they are
rested and ready for effective learning at school.
I hope you had a wonderful holiday and are ready
In June 2007, five ISS students and three teachers travelled
inspirational students. A school and an orphanage in Northern
Thailand, School for Life creates a family atmosphere for over
In June 2008, seven students from the International School
experience the lessons such a volunteer experience has to
offer. Our benefit dinner last year was a great success, and
International Friendship Group – SWEC – YEPA
Mrs Christine Kemp CKemp@isstavanger
We are very pleased to announce that six
SWEC students will be attending the TUNZA
International Children’s Conference on the
Environment in Stavanger during the week
16th - 20 th June. This conference will bring
together over 700 children between the ages
of ten and fourteen to learn about what they can do
to make our world a better place.
The main themes are ENERGY, WATER, BIODIVERSITY
and PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION. The delegates
will attend, workshops, presentations and inter-religious and
cultural events. They will be part of Action Groups and have
plenty of time to make new friends from many nations.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our students. The selection
process involved them having to write about themselves, about
what they do as members of SWEC and why they wanted to be
chosen to attend this conference. They also had to be ten years
old before 16th June!
The papers they submitted were very interesting and obviously
made a good impression on the selection committee because all
six canditates were accepted. Well done to all of them. They’ll
be fine representatives of ISS. They will be accompanied by
myself.
Congratulations to: Alef Comisso, Mahnoor and Haider Raja,
You’ll be interested to know, too, that several IFG students
represented!
SWEC’s Easter Egg Raffle has been a big success again.
A total of kr 2400 was raised and there were no expenses.
The goodies to fill all the cardboard eggs were donated by
SWEC students and the cardboard eggs and chocolate eggs were
donated by the Kemp family. Kr 2400 is enough to fund 20
chicken-rearing programmes for needy families in Malawi so
well done, SWEC. Of course, without all the wonderful people
who bought the raffle tickets none of this would have been
possible. Thank you, one and all.
