New gold-medal opportunities at the Branded Beef Competition The Royal Queensland Show has always been a major supporter of the Queensland beef industry and its premier showcase for Stud and Prime Beef Cattle. Now in its sixth year at the Royal Queensland Food & Wine Show (RQFWS), the 2010 Branded Beef Competition on the 1st of June offers producers more opportunities for success than ever before with the introduction of new competition classes and awards. Made possible by generous sponsorship from John Kilroy and Cha Cha Char Restaurant and the Australian Wagyu Association, the 2010 Branded Beef Competition features an open class for non MSA and/or Organic brands, doubles the current MSA class into MSA Grain and MSA Grass Fed, and introduces an entirely new class for MSA and non MSA Graded Wagyu. Executive Officer of the Australian Wagyu Association Mr. Michael Beattie said of the new Wagyu Class “Wagyu’s unique flavour and superior eating quality characteristics pitch it into a league of its own and with the RNA providing a Wagyu specific class for 2010, it was an opportunity the Association could not but sponsor. Wagyu has positioned itself as an important sector of the Australian Beef Industry and it certainly is a breed that can only but improve the position our beef is viewed both here and abroad.” Attracting entries nationwide from all sizes of beef producers, from major multi-national companies to small regional enterprises, the 2010 RQFWS Branded Beef Competition is Australia’s most prestigious and commercially recognised Beef competition, providing entrants with valuable feedback and opinion from some of the best and most respected experts in the industry, and an outstanding way to showcase products to both their peers and customers. For the 2009 RQFWS the Branded Beef Competition introduced a level of impartiality unknown in other competitions. Meat samples are prepared and cooked (grilled) scientifically by leading Department of Primary Industry food scientists, so every piece presented for judging has been cooked to a uniquely similar standard. In 2009 the launch of the first RQFWS was supported by a 12-month review of the judging rigour in all competitions to maintain the utmost equity and integrity in the award process. The Royal Queensland Show built on their core of nationally recognised judges, recruiting experts from around Australia to ensure the delivery of superior judging processes and standards, including the renowned culinary judge, broadcaster, writer and educator Russell Smith as Chairman of Judges for Food Competitions. Judges at the Branded Beef Competition will include Russell Smith, Michael Crowley Manager of Meat Standards Australia, Brisbane culinary identity Peter Howard, John Kilroy proprietor of Brisbane’s award winning steak-centric Cha Cha Char and Jellyfish, with guest foodie Judges including David Pugh of Restaurant Two , Melissa Downes of Brisbane's Channel 9 and Javier Codina Chef de Cuisine & Owner Moda and Moda Catering. So if you’re a beef producer with a passion for excellence, the 2010 RQFWS Branded Beef Competition will allow you to put your produce and processes to the definitive test, and become part of a powerful brand in the national food and beverage industry.
