corruption in regulatory bodies like the AICTE and MCI; and
unscrupulous private players.
Raise college fees for the basic BA, BCom and BSc courses. They
are totally disproportionate to the cost of running these degree
courses. Since fees are low, neither students nor managements
take the courses seriously. Poor students may be helped with
scholarships and loans.
Establish a 'National Human Resource Development Fund', as
recommended by UGC, with at least one per cent of the GDP, to
tackle the problems of quality and equity. Let us not forget that
college enrollment in India, in the age group of 18-23 years, is
only six per cent against the 47 per cent average in developed
countries; China, whose college
enrollment is already double that
of India. aims to take it to 20
percent by 2010.
This just goes to show that
India has a long way to go, both in
terms of quantity and quality, in
higher education. Since our Prime
Minister Dr Manmohan Singh
himself has once served as the
chairman of UGC, will he push some
of these reforms?
In The Tribune 3 January Page 3
Dr. Subramanium Swamy, President Janata Party has said
that;
# “To survive as a united democracy, the country now needs
Hindu agenda”
Dr. Subramanium Swamy needs to know that he is living
in a secular country. Our great country has its constitution that
has to be followed by its citizens, even those citizens who wish to
rule it. Such unconstitutional utterances by Dr. Swami only
make him liable for punishment under law.
# “Hindustan is a nation of Hindus and those who proudly
acknowledge that their ancestors were Hindus”
We are all very proud to be Indians. But we are also very
proud to possess our religious beliefs though we continue to be
Indians. Actually, as per the constitution of India, only this
thought is the mainstream legal thought of Indians. Rest are like
Dr. Subramanium Swamy and should be deported along with his
like-minded freaks.
Regarding the ancestry, it does not at all matter as to who
were the ancestors of Jesus Christ (however, they were not
Christians, but Jesus Christ was); it does not at all matter as to
who were the ancestors of Mohammad (however, they were not
Muslims, but Mohammad was); similarly, it does not at all
matter as to who were the ancestors of Guru Nanak (however,
they were not Sikhs, but Guru Nanak was). All that is significant
is that who you are today - not that
what your ancestors had been that
is the thing of the past.
# “Hindu forces should unite and
vote for parties that adopt a preapproved
Hindu agenda”
Hindus are not just Hindus
they are Indians and a part of the
progress and prosperity of this great
country. So Dr. Swamy's sermons
would be best ignored by the right
thinking Hindus.
And it is interesting to hear “a
pre-approved” Hindu agenda.
Although in itself a Hindu agenda is
a vague term. And then a “preapproved”
agenda is intriguing. It
would be nice to ask Dr. Swamy as to
who approves this agenda? Or does
he mean to say that all Hindus
should come to Dr. Swamy to get the
necessary approval? I don't feel that
Hindus would oblige him. Well,
anyway best of luck Dr. Swamy.
