We come to know two types of persons Gurmukh and
Manmukh through reading and understanding Gurbani.
Gurmukh is one whose Mukh (Mind), is always towards his
Guru i.e. towards Gurus teachings and his (daily) life is based on
these teachings. He is always alert, learning new good thoughts,
acquiring useful knowledge always and is busy in purposeful
pursuits for the benifit of society, thereby he is always
contented, happy and in high spirits. Guru Amar Dass says :-
Gurmukh Budhe Kade Nahi Jina Antar Surat Gyan.
Sada Sada Har Gun Raveh Antar Sehaj Dhyan.
Oey Sada Anand Bebek Rahey Dukh Sukh Ek Saman.
Tina Nadri Eko Ayia Sab Atamram Pahchan.
(Page - 1418)
On the other hand, Manmukh is one who is selfcentred and
is neither willing to tune himself to the teachings of the Guru nor
is willing to be in the company of good people (Sad Sangat). He
always induges in negative activities and thereby is always
unhappy as Guru Amar Dass Ji says :-
Manmukh Dukh Ka Khet Hai
Dukh Bejay Dukh Khai
Dukh Wich Jame Dukh Mare
Howme Karat Wihai (Page 947)
Due to our wrong deeds and material pursuits we are not
able to achieve spiritual happiness and are miserable. Guru
Nanak says :-
Rain Gawai Soekey
Diwas Gawaia Khai
Heery Jaisa Janam Hai
My dear readers,
Wahe guru ji ka khalsa.
Wahe guru ji ki fateh.
Kaudi Badle Jai. (Page 156)
Ultimately it is your attitude in life that determine whether
you are becoming a Gurmukh or Manmukh i.e. whether you are
a happy or unhappy person.
Try not to become a man of success but a man of value.
Attitude is the way we respond
to life each day-all day. Your attitude
is the sum total of your beliefs,
assumptions, expectations and
values. Attitude is of two types -
positive or right attitude, negative
or wrong attitude.
It is because of the right attitude
that some people are so successful;
they have gone through hardships
and difficult times, yet their
buoyant positive expectation keep
them always in high spirits. Wrong
attitudes have made the lives of
many people miserable and
frustrated. On an average, we
process 50,000 thoughts during one
day and each thought affects each of
our cells. When our expectations or
thoughts are positive, we are helpful
towards others and exercise better
judgement, problem-solveing,
decision-making and creative skills.
When our expectation or thoughts
are negative, we have less ability to
solve problems and make break
through because we feel insecure
and emotionally week.
Consequently we are frustrated and
are unhappy.
Teachings of Gurus and Guru
Granth Sahib are strongly helpful in
developing right attitudes such as -
Kirat Karo, Nam Japo, Wand
Chhako, quality of forgiveness, be
humble and help the downtroden,
