<strong>Fitness</strong> class FAQ’s<br />

As the city’s largest health & leisure club we’ve got over 700 classes per week. So there’s<br />

plenty to choose from including the popular Les Mills programmes, yoga, Zumba and<br />

RPM. Here’s a handy guide to the most <strong>com</strong>mon questions:<br />

I have never exercised before,<br />

which class would suit me?<br />

It’s best to start with a low impact class.<br />

This will allow you to familiarise yourself<br />

with the demands of the session. Our<br />

instructors can advise you on the range<br />

of classes on offer.<br />

Can I attend a class if I am not<br />

a member?<br />

Yes. You can pay at reception or pay<br />

in full over the telephone to confirm<br />

your booking. (Switch, Visa, MasterCard,<br />

& Amex accepted.)<br />

What do I wear?<br />

Always wear <strong>com</strong>fortable, appropriate<br />

clothing and supportive trainers if<br />

necessary. Socks are optional but should<br />

protect you from getting blisters.<br />

Do I have to <strong>com</strong>plete a Bodypump<br />

Technique before taking part in a<br />

Bodypump class?<br />

Yes. This is a specialised session<br />

which demonstrates technique and<br />

explains class content, keeping you safe<br />

and helping you get the most from the<br />

class. This class is free of charge.<br />

What age can I begin classes?<br />

You have to be 16 to attend all Les Mills<br />

classes, Zumba and Mind & Body classes<br />

such as Pilates and Yoga. Zumbatomic and<br />

Junior Powerhoop are open to any age.<br />

Can I just turn up to a class?<br />

Yes. We advise you to contact the venue<br />

to ensure that there is space available,<br />

particularly during evening times.<br />

Why are some classes listed in orange<br />

or blue?<br />

If a class is in orange on the timetable it<br />

means it is a new class for this edition, for<br />

example Sh’Bam or Metafit. If a class is<br />

listed in blue, it means the class is held in<br />

the swimming pool.<br />

Can I book online?<br />

Yes. <strong>Fitness</strong> members and Leisure Card<br />

holders can book, cancel and manage<br />

fitness class bookings online. See page 18<br />

for more info.<br />

<strong>Fitness</strong> class ‘no shows’<br />

It may surprise you to learn that across Edinburgh Leisure we have around<br />

5000 such ‘no shows’ every month. That’s a lot of people taking up spaces and<br />

not showing up. And a lot of people missing out on the chance to enjoy the<br />

buzz of group exercise!<br />

Here’s how we’re dealing with it:<br />

• A £2 charge for any member who books a class but fails to turn up or cancel<br />

before the class starts.<br />

• Leisure Card customers booking online now have to pay in advance and no<br />

refunds will be made available if you book but fail to turn up or cancel.<br />

• Leisure Card customers who’ve booked over the phone or in person, won’t<br />

have paid but if you don’t attend or cancel and we’re unable to fill the space<br />

you’ll be asked for full payment of the class on your next visit.<br />

Remember a quick phone call is all it takes to cancel if you can’t make it. Or if<br />

you’re a member or Leisure Card holder, you can amend your booking online.<br />

20/20/20 – 20 minutes of step, 20 minutes<br />

of circuits, 20 minutes of abdominal work.<br />

All–round fitness.<br />

Aquafit – A safe and effective workout using the<br />

resistance that water creates. Equipment is used<br />

to increase intensity – suitable for all ages and<br />

fitness levels.<br />

Aquanatal – An Aquafit class specifically for<br />

ante/post natal women. This is a safe, effective<br />

way to work out throughout your pregnancy and<br />

can help you get back in shape after birth.<br />

Aquazumba – Good old Zumba, but in the pool!<br />

Bodyattack – A simple, motivating and satisfying<br />

workout which will deliver results. This will suit<br />

all participants using high energy interval<br />

training techniques.<br />

Bodybalance – A Yoga, Tai <strong>Ch</strong>i, Pilates workout<br />

that builds flexibility and strength and leaves<br />

you feeling centred and calm.<br />

Body<strong>com</strong>bat – A unique blend of various<br />

<strong>com</strong>bat sports giving you a fat burning,<br />

strength–gaining workout.<br />

Bodyjam – An addictive fusion of dance<br />

and aerobic moves.<br />

Bodypump – A muscular strength endurance<br />

workout using weights. Strengthens, conditions<br />

Bodypump Technique – Specialised session<br />

demonstrating technique and explaining class<br />

content. Ideal for new customers and individuals<br />

Bodystep – The ultimate step class with simple<br />

yet effective choreography.<br />

that leaves you feeling thoroughly invigorated,<br />

strengthen and tone the whole body using<br />

hand held weights and exercise bands.<br />

Bootcamp – A circuit–based class using various<br />

equipment to push you to your limits but<br />

physique. A <strong>com</strong>bination of hand to eye co–<br />

ordination, balance and timing in a fun<br />

and energetic class open to all abilities.<br />

Cardio Tennis – A fun group activity featuring<br />

Circuits – A fantastic station–based, workout<br />

incorporating all aspects of fitness.<br />

Core Conditioning – A 30 minute class focussing<br />

on core (abs and back) strength and stability,<br />

improving posture, spinal strength and flexibility;<br />

an excellent core workout!<br />

Core Pilates – A traditional Pilates class with all<br />

the benefits of strengthening and lengthening<br />

the muscles. Includes a dynamic section to really<br />

challenge the core.<br />

CXWORX – If you’re looking for a short, sharp<br />

workout that’ll inspire you to a new level of<br />

fitness, while strengthening and toning your<br />

body? CXWORX is for you! The class <strong>com</strong>bines<br />

the best of personal training with the energy of a<br />

group fitness class.<br />

New to CXWORX – A 15 minute technique class<br />

to introduce you to CXWORX. It is re<strong>com</strong>mended<br />

you go to this class if you haven’t done a<br />

CXWORX class before.<br />

<strong>Fitness</strong> Pilates – These Pilates classes have<br />

all the benefits of Pilates but they flow more<br />

quickly and at a higher level increasing<br />

metabolic conditioning.


Get Up & Go Active Life – An exercise class<br />

designed to improve mobility, flexibility and keep<br />

you fit supple and stretched.<br />

Get Up & Go Gym – Be motivated into shape<br />

in this superb coached session held in the<br />

centre’s gym.<br />

Gravity Circuits – A station–based workout using<br />

various equipment including Gravity® machines.<br />

Gravity® provides a total body workout using<br />

cables and bodyweight against Gravity to<br />

improve strength, lose weight and increase<br />

flexibility.<br />

Latin Rhythms – A contemporary and fun<br />

aerobic workout with a twist of Latino dance.<br />

Line Dancing – Fun filled dance activity to the<br />

sounds of country and western music. (Get Up<br />

Metafit – An effective and simple workout that<br />

gets big results. Burning fat by raising your<br />

resting metabolism, Metafit <strong>com</strong>bines traditional<br />

bodyweight exercises with high intensity interval<br />

Powerhoop – A fun and effective workout<br />

using a weighted, padded hula hoop that will<br />

dance moves, SH’BAM is the perfect way to<br />

music from the big band swing era.<br />

Swiss Ball – A core stability class using a fit ball.<br />

A class to strengthen the whole body focusing<br />

Tai <strong>Ch</strong>i – Relaxation, health and fitness for all<br />

ages and abilities. Tai <strong>Ch</strong>i is an exercise system<br />

for stress reduction and self–healing.<br />

Tums, Bums & Thighs – A conditioning class<br />

specifically for toning the mid to lower body.<br />

Yoga – A form of exercise that uses slow<br />

movements and stretching. Good for increasing<br />

flexibility and balance, and to relieve stress and<br />

relax. We offer many different styles of Yoga.<br />
