BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS (DISEASES)<br />

e. Disposal of equipment, product or material suspected to be contaminated with bloodborne<br />

pathogens in closable, biohazard-labeled bags and containers.<br />

f. Safe disposal of contaminated materials in accordance with applicable regulated waste<br />

regulations.<br />

3. MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS—Each facility must have implemented medical procedures to reduce or<br />

eliminate the risk of infection, in the event of occupational exposure. Medical procedures must<br />

include as a minimum:<br />

a. Medical vaccination programs and follow up must be performed by or under the supervision of<br />

a licensed physician or by or under the supervision of another licensed healthcare professional<br />

and be at no cost to employee.<br />

b. Hepatitis B vaccine and vaccination series shall be made available to all employees who have<br />

occupational exposure.<br />

c. Post exposure evaluation and follow-up to all employees who have had an exposure incident.<br />

d. Affected employee provided with a copy of medical results/opinion within 15 days of medical<br />

procedures.<br />

4. TRAINING—All employees with potential occupational exposure must be provided with bloodborne<br />

pathogen training at the time of initial assignment and annually thereafter. Training must cover at a<br />

minimum:<br />

• Applicable regulations and procedures.<br />

• General explanation of bloodborne diseases.<br />

• Exposure pathways (e.g., inhalation, by open wound).<br />

• Tasks that might cause exposure.<br />

• Control methods and limitations.<br />

• Proper use and location of personal protective equipment.<br />

• Medical and post exposure procedures.<br />

• Signs and labels.<br />

• Disposal procedures for contaminated product, equipment or materials.<br />

5. DOCUMENTATION—<br />

Training Records: Each facility must maintain training records for a minimum of 3 years.<br />

Medical Records: Each facility must maintain confidential and secure medical records for the<br />

minimum length of employment plus 30 years. Medical records shall not be disclosed without<br />

employee’s express written consent except as required by law. <strong>The</strong> following medical records must,<br />

at a minimum, include:<br />
