RESPIRATORY PROTECTION<br />

• Change schedules may be determined by either experimental or analytical methods,<br />

manufacturer’s recommendation or using mathematical models (e.g. Yoon-Nelson<br />

Mathematical Model).<br />

3. TRAINING—<br />

Respiratory protection training will be conducted at the time of initial assignment and at least<br />

annually for all employees who are required to wear respirators to safely perform their job functions.<br />

Training must include as a minimum:<br />

• Proper procedures for putting on and taking off respirators (including seal check<br />

process).<br />

• Proper cleaning and storage.<br />

• Cartridge replacement procedures where applicable.<br />

• Why the respirator is necessary and how improper fit, use, or maintenance can<br />

compromise the protective effect of the respirator limitations and capabilities of the<br />

respirator.<br />

• Limitations and capabilities of the respirator.<br />

• Use in emergency situations.<br />

• Recognition of medical signs and symptoms that may limit or prevent effective use.<br />

• General requirements of this standard.<br />

• Retraining is required annually and when:<br />

- Workplace conditions change, new types of respirators are used.<br />

- Inadequacies in the employee’s knowledge or use indicate need.<br />

• Program Evaluation- Contractors must conduct evaluations of the workplace as<br />

necessary to ensure proper implementation of the program, and consult with employees<br />

to ensure proper use.<br />

4. DOCUMENTATION<br />

Training Records: Each facility must maintain training records for a minimum of 3 years.<br />

<strong>Inc</strong>ident Records: Each facility must maintain incident records for a minimum of 5 years.<br />

Other Records:<br />

a. Current risk assessment.<br />

b. Current fit test records (Respirators only).<br />

c. Inspection records for a minimum of 3 years.<br />

d. Records of medical evaluations must be retained and made available.<br />
