GENERAL WORK ENVIRONMENT<br />
STANDARD<br />
<strong>The</strong> contractor provides a safe, hygienic and healthy workplace setting and takes necessary steps to<br />
prevent accidents and injury arising out of, linked with or occurring in the course of work or as result of<br />
the operation of contractor’s facilities. <strong>The</strong> contractor has systems to detect, avoid and respond to<br />
potential risks to the safety and health of all employees.<br />
‣ Develop and implement process and procedures to reduce or eliminate risk associated with the<br />
workplace environment. Contractor must comply with requirements as outlined in this standard<br />
or relevant local laws and regulations, whichever is more stringent.<br />
RESPONSIBILITIES<br />
Location Manager must ensure that the workplace environment policy and procedures are developed,<br />
implemented and followed.<br />
HSE Representative must establish, maintain and administer workplace environment policy and<br />
procedures.<br />
Managers & Supervisors must ensure that employees are trained and adhere to the requirements of the<br />
workplace environment policy and procedures.<br />
Employees must adhere to the requirements of the workplace environment policy and procedures.<br />
REQUIREMENTS<br />
1. GENERAL DUTY—Each facility shall furnish to each employee a place of employment which is free<br />
from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to<br />
the employee or environment.<br />
2. WORK SPACE—Each facility must provide adequate working space to allow employees and<br />
contractors to perform work without risk to health, safety and wellbeing. Each facility must provide a<br />
minimum of 11 cubed meters (37 cubed feet) per employee or contractor (for calculation purposes,<br />
rooms over 3 M (10 FT) should be counted as 3 M (10 FT)).<br />
3. HOUSEKEEPING—Each facility must ensure that all areas where employees and contractors work or<br />
travel are kept clear of hazards. At a minimum, they must:<br />
a. Keep all places of employment clean, dry and in a good state of repair.<br />
b. Maintain walkways clear of tripping hazards and other obstructions.<br />
c. Provide a minimum clearance of 0.9 m (3 ft) for all electrical panels, eyewash/shower stations<br />
and other emergency equipment.<br />
d. Keep storage areas orderly at all times. Materials may not be stacked within 45 cm (18 in) of<br />
ceiling or fire sprinklers (whichever is lower).<br />
e. Spills must be cleaned immediately and waste disposed of properly (warning signs should be<br />
used on wet floor).<br />
