SANITATION<br />
STANDARD<br />
<strong>The</strong> contractor provides a safe, hygienic and healthy workplace setting and takes necessary steps to<br />
prevent accidents and injury arising out of, linked with or occurring in the course of work or as result of<br />
the operation of contractor’s facilities. <strong>The</strong> contractor has systems to detect, avoid and respond to<br />
potential risks to the safety and health of all employees.<br />
‣ Develop and implement processes and procedures to minimize risks associated with sanitation<br />
in the workplace environment.<br />
RESPONSIBILITIES<br />
Location Manager must ensure that the sanitation policy and procedures are developed, implemented<br />
and followed.<br />
HSE Representative must establish, maintain and administer the sanitation policy and procedures.<br />
Managers and Supervisors must ensure that employees are trained and adhere to the requirements of<br />
the sanitation policy and procedures.<br />
Employees must adhere to the requirements of the sanitation policy and procedures.<br />
DEFINITIONS<br />
Sanitation is the hygienic means of promoting health through prevention of human contact with the<br />
hazards of wastes. Hazards can either be; physical, microbiological, biological or chemical agents of<br />
disease. Wastes that can cause health problems are human and animal feces, solid wastes, domestic<br />
wastewater, industrial wastes, and agricultural wastes.<br />
REQUIREMENTS<br />
1. RISK ASSESSMENT—Each facility must have a documented annual risk assessment to reduce or eliminate<br />
risk associated with sanitation performed which includes as a minimum:<br />
a. Identification of hazards associated with sanitation.<br />
b. Evaluation of risk associated with hazards.<br />
c. Identification and implementation of control measures to reduce the risk (e.g., ventilation,<br />
cleaning).<br />
2. POLICIES & PROCEDURES—Each facility must have implemented procedures to keep all areas where<br />
employees and contractors work free of sanitation hazards. At a minimum, they must:<br />
a. Keep all places of employment clean, dry and in a good state of repair.<br />
b. Construct and maintain every workplace in such a way as to prevent the entrance of rodents,<br />
insects or other vermin.<br />
c. Provide protection from wet environment when work tasks result in wet conditions.<br />
d. Store garbage and refuse in leak proof, non-absorbent containers that are emptied daily.<br />
e. Clean spills immediately and waste must be disposed of properly (warning signs should be used<br />
on wet floor).<br />
