2. POLICIES & PROCEDURES—Each facility must develop and implement procedures that include, as a<br />

minimum, the following:<br />

a. An inventory of all streams of solid waste. <strong>The</strong> inventory must include types of waste, quantities<br />

generated, recycling options and rates, and names and locations of disposal facilities.<br />

b. Solid waste minimization program. Preference must be given to waste prevention, followed by<br />

waste reduction.<br />

c. Segregation of waste into reusable, recoverable, recyclable and non-recyclable categories.<br />

Clean, dedicated containers must be provided for each of these waste categories.<br />

d. Hazardous and solid waste must be segregated.<br />

e. Solid waste storage locations must be covered and secured, and the surfaces must be<br />

impermeable.<br />

f. Transport and disposal companies must be licensed or authorized to transport and dispose of<br />

solid waste.<br />

g. Records of solid waste disposal must be kept.<br />

h. Onsite burning or disposal of solid waste will only be allowed with approval and a permit from<br />

the applicable regulatory agencies.<br />

3. TRAINING—<br />

Solid Waste Awareness: All employees must receive awareness training. Training must include:<br />

Descriptions of all solid waste streams.<br />

General techniques for waste minimization.<br />

Solid Waste Management: Employees whose work involves solid waste handling, such as<br />

maintenance and custodial staff, will receive the same training as outlined above, as well as<br />

training in:<br />

Proper handling, storage and disposal techniques and procedures.<br />

Specific operational procedures for waste minimization.<br />

<strong>The</strong> use of personal protective equipment.<br />
