HAZARDOUS WASTE<br />

STANDARD<br />

<strong>The</strong> contractor must protect human health and the environment by meeting applicable regulatory<br />

requirements including air emissions, solid/hazardous waste and water discharge. <strong>The</strong> contractor<br />

adopts reasonable measures to mitigate negative operational impacts on the environment and strives<br />

to continuously improve environmental performance.<br />

‣ Develop and implement policies and procedures for hazardous waste management to<br />

minimize risks to human health and the environment.<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

Location Manager must ensure that the hazardous waste procedures are developed, implemented<br />

and followed.<br />

HSE Representative must establish, maintain and administer the hazardous waste procedures.<br />

Managers and Supervisors must ensure that employees are trained and adhere to the requirements of<br />

the hazardous waste processes and procedures.<br />

Employees must adhere to the requirements of the hazardous waste processes and procedures.<br />

DEFINITIONS<br />

• Hazardous waste is any waste or combination of wastes with the potential to damage human<br />

health, living organisms or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported or<br />

disposed.<br />

REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. RISK ASSESSMENT—Each facility must have a documented annual risk assessment performed which<br />

includes as a minimum:<br />

a. Identifying all hazardous wastes including all waste streams that potentially could be considered<br />

flammable, corrosive, toxic or pose a threat to human health or the environment.<br />

b. Determining the amount of waste generated and environment and human impact.<br />

c. Implementing preventative measures to be taken (e.g., ventilation, personal protective<br />

equipment, emergency showers or eye wash stations.)<br />

2. POLICIES & PROCEDURES—Each facility generating or storing 100 kg (220 lbs) or more of waste per<br />

month must implement procedures to reduce or eliminate the risk associated with hazardous waste<br />

which must cover as a minimum, the following:<br />

a. Obtain all required permits for hazardous waste generation, storage and disposal in<br />

accordance with local laws and regulations.<br />

b. Hazardous waste must be disposed within reasonable time limits.<br />

c. Use licensed and permitted hazardous waste transporters, treatment, and disposal facilities.<br />

d. Hazardous waste storage area requirements:<br />
