LASER SAFETY<br />

STANDARD<br />

<strong>The</strong> contractor provides a safe, hygienic and healthy workplace setting and takes necessary steps to<br />

prevent accidents and injury arising out of, linked with or occurring in the course of work or as result of<br />

the operation of contractor’s facilities. <strong>The</strong> contractor has systems to detect, avoid and respond to<br />

potential risks to the safety and health of all employees.<br />

‣ Develop and implement process and procedures to reduce or eliminate risk of occupational<br />

exposure to LASERs.<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

Location Manager must ensure that the LASER safety procedures are developed, implemented and<br />

followed.<br />

HSE Representative must establish, maintain, and administer LASER safety processes and procedures.<br />

Managers and Supervisors must ensure that employees are trained and adhere to the requirements of<br />

the LASER safety program.<br />

Employees must adhere to the requirements of the LASER safety program.<br />

DEFINITIONS<br />

• LASER (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) is a device which produces a<br />

powerful narrow beam of light that differs from ordinary light in that it is monochromatic (one color),<br />

organized, and directional. Examples of LASER applications include: cutting metal, performing<br />

medical operations, measuring systems and creating patterns of light for entertainment.<br />

REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. RISK ASSESSMENT—Each facility must have a documented risk assessment performed which includes<br />

as a minimum:<br />

a. Identification and classification of LASERs and associated hazards.<br />

b. Evaluation of risks associated with hazards.<br />

c. Identification of control measures to reduce risk (e.g., monitoring, personal protective<br />

equipment).<br />

2. POLICIES & PROCEDURES—Each facility must implement procedures to reduce or eliminate the risk<br />

of occupational exposure to LASERs, which must cover as a minimum, the following:<br />

a. LASER must be designed with guarding and interlocks to prevent exposure to the beam.<br />

b. Restrict area to authorized personnel only.<br />

c. Signage and postings in LASER areas.<br />

d. Appropriate personnel protective equipment.<br />

e. Written job specific procedures for handling or working with LASERS.<br />

f. Emergency procedures.<br />
