TRAFFIC AND VEHICLE MANAGEMENT<br />

b. Periodic preventive maintenance (including any statutory inspections of lift truck equipment<br />

and accessories).<br />

• Immediate withdrawal and repair of faulty equipment.<br />

• Repairs must only be carried out by a competent person.<br />

c. Pre-use inspection to ensure safe working condition.<br />

d. Written safe operating rules.<br />

e. Segregation of pedestrians and PMV’s.<br />

f. Reporting of all incidents and near misses.<br />

g. Battery charging and refilling areas must be safe and secure:<br />

• Chargers must be secured, covered and protected from the elements.<br />

• No smoking within 100 ft (30 m).<br />

• Appropriate personal protective equipment and spill response equipment.<br />

• Eye wash/shower facilities available.<br />

h. Housekeeping must allow for safe operation of PMV’s.<br />

3. TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT—Each facility must implement procedures for traffic management which<br />

must cover as a minimum, the following for all motorized transportation:<br />

a. Consideration of one-way systems to reduce or eliminate the need for reversing where possible.<br />

b. Protection for vehicles reversing (i.e., reversing alarms, spotter, etc.).<br />

c. Site speed limits.<br />

d. Use of convex mirrors at blind spots (if the blind spot cannot be eliminated).<br />

e. Installation and maintenance of external lighting.<br />

f. Personal protective equipment (i.e., high visibility jackets, safety shoes etc.).<br />

g. Site driving rules.<br />

h. Control of external drivers (i.e., site rules, smoking and waiting arrangements).<br />

i. Vehicles must be in good working order (i.e., lights, brakes, tires, etc. properly maintained).<br />

j. <strong>Safety</strong> of drivers and employees during loading and unloading.<br />

K. <strong>Safety</strong> of employees when entering the facility.<br />

L. All drivers shall be licensed by either the factory certification program and/or government<br />

municipality or agency where applicable given vehicle type.<br />
