MEDICAL SERVICES & FIRST AID<br />

STANDARD<br />

<strong>The</strong> contractor provides a safe, hygienic and healthy workplace setting and takes necessary steps to<br />

prevent accidents and injury arising out of, linked with or occurring in the course of work or as result of<br />

the operation of contractor’s facilities. <strong>The</strong> contractor has systems to detect, avoid and respond to<br />

potential risks to the safety and health of all employees.<br />

‣ Develop and implement processes and procedures to respond to incidents that require first aid<br />

or other medical attention.<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

Location Manager must ensure that first aid procedures are developed, implemented and followed.<br />

HSE Representative must establish, maintain and administer first aid processes and procedures.<br />

Managers and Supervisors must ensure that employees are trained and adhere to the requirements of<br />

the first aid processes and procedures.<br />

Employees must immediately report to management any work related incident requiring first aid.<br />

DEFINITIONS<br />

• First Aid is medical treatment administered to an injured or sick person before professional medical<br />

care is available, if needed.<br />

REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. RISK ASSESSMENT—Each facility must have a documented risk assessment performed which includes<br />

as a minimum:<br />

a. Identification of hazards and location that could result in an incident.<br />

b. Evaluation of the risk associated with the hazards (include number of employees at each<br />

location).<br />

c. Identification of control measures to reduce the risk (e.g. first aid supplies, equipment and<br />

personnel).<br />

2. POLICIES & PROCEDURES—Each facility must have implemented first aid procedures which must<br />

cover as a minimum, the following:<br />

a. Resources available (internally or externally) to respond to any medical emergency.<br />

b. Emergency telephone numbers must be conspicuously located by each telephone.<br />

c. Location and availability of medical facilities and emergency services.<br />

d. Records of first aid and medical treatments must be maintained.<br />

3. FIRST AID RESPONDERS—Each facility with certified first aid responders must meet the following<br />

minimum requirements:<br />

a. Adequate number of trained responders to cover number of employees and hazards at facility.<br />
