FALL PROTECTION<br />

STANDARD<br />

<strong>The</strong> contractor provides a safe, hygienic and healthy workplace setting and takes necessary steps to<br />

prevent accidents and injury arising out of, linked with or occurring in the course of work or as result of<br />

the operation of contractor’s facilities. <strong>The</strong> contractor has systems to detect, avoid and respond to<br />

potential risks to the safety and health of all employees.<br />

‣ Develop and implement procedures to reduce or eliminate risk associated with falling off, onto,<br />

or through working levels and to protect employees or contractors from being struck by falling<br />

objects.<br />

RESPONSIBILITIES<br />

Location Manager must ensure that the fall protection procedures are developed, implemented and<br />

followed.<br />

HSE Representative must establish, maintain and administer the fall protection procedures.<br />

Managers and Supervisors must ensure that employees are trained and adhere to the requirements of<br />

the fall protection procedures.<br />

Employees must adhere to the requirements of the fall protection procedures.<br />

DEFINITIONS<br />

• Fall protection system is the use of multiple, approved safety equipment components such as body<br />

harnesses, shock absorbing lanyards, deceleration devices, vertical lifelines, and anchorages,<br />

interconnected in order to stop a free fall.<br />

REQUIREMENTS<br />

1. RISK ASSESSMENT—Each facility must have a documented fall risk assessment performed which<br />

includes as a minimum:<br />

a. Identification of which job tasks that an employee or object is at risk of falling.<br />

b. Evaluation of the risk associated with tasks involving work at height.<br />

c. Identification and implementation of control measures to reduce the risk.<br />

2. POLICIES & PROCEDURES—Each facility must implement procedures to reduce or eliminate the risk<br />

of a fall or being struck by a falling object which must cover, as a minimum, the following:<br />

a. Full body harness is required for any unprotected height of 1.8 meters (6 feet) or greater.<br />

b. Fall protection equipment must be inspected before and after each use.<br />

c. Monthly fall protection equipment inspection.<br />

d. Proper maintenance, cleaning and storage of fall protection equipment.<br />

e. Proper use of fall protection systems.<br />

f. Proper handling, storage and securing of tools and material.<br />
