Johan Hedin
an innovative folk musician
Johan Hedin was twelve
when he was gripped by
nyckelharpa fever once
and for all. His own
diaries from the time
make, as he himself confesses,
alarming reading.
He played constantly: in
the evenings, in the
morning, before breakfast,
on the train, at the
bus stop – at any, in fact,
spare moment of the day.
He even got up especially
early to play before
school.
‘‘But it was the best
thing in the world for me,
so it was no sacrifice,’’ he
recalls. It was also possibly
the right age to develop
an obsession. Some
children learn makes of
car by heart, others collect
football cards; Johan Hedin’s
great passion was the nyckelharpa.
And while cars and footballers eventually
fade in other collectors’ minds,
the nyckelharpa stayed alive for
Hedin; and not only that, he has gone
on to become one of the most important
innovators of nyckelharpa musicianship
in the world. Now when
Swedish folk music, in particular
nyckelharpa music, is winning ever
greater international popularity, Johan
Hedin is one of its cardinal practitioners.
His innovativeness rests, however,
on a bed of rock. He was born and
bred in the folk music forests of Småland,
echoes of which can be heard in
his music; in the background of his
bold innovations and musical voyages
of discovery lies a strong local tradition
of ornate baroque-inspired polskas.
The nyckelharpa has ‘‘cultural significance’’
and ‘‘a good story’, as Robert
Simonds, owner of North Side
Records in Minneapolis put it in an
interview a few years back. The
uniqueness of the instrument makes it
conspicuous – a necessity in today’s
jungle of world music offerings. In
1990, the nyckelharpa stepped onto
the world stage, and its music became
part of the world music scene. The
instrument itself and its techniques
spread, so that it is now played
around Europe and as far afield
as North America, Australia and
Japan, and is reckoned amongst a
collection of ‘‘global folk instrum
ents’ alongside the sitar, djembe,
mbira, didgeridoo, balalaika, and
bouzouki. Even to Swedes the
nyckelharpa is exotic and with
its rasping bourdon tones belongs
to the music of the Middle Ages.
The greatest icon of the 20 th Century
was Eric Sahlström, who, characteristically,
took the instrument down
Nyckelharpa: Swedish folkmusic instrument
played with a bow like a
fiddle; it has keys like a hurdy-gurdy,
and sympathetic strings like a viola
d’amore. Originally it had one melody
string, one row of keys and one or more
drone strings. In the 18 th century sympathetic
strings became convention,
and later more melody strings were
added. The most common kind played
today has three melody strings, one
drone string and twelve sympathetic
strings.
The nyckelharpa has become a symbol
of Swedish culture and of the
country itself. A picture of the instrument
can be found on the Swedish 50
kronor bill.
paths as yet untrod. He wrote music
the like of which had never been
heard from the nyckelharpa, and
helped to develop it into a modern
instrument.
JOHAN HEDIN
➤ Continuing from page 1
The same inquisitiveness and courage
are what makes Johan Hedin so
special. To obtain the sounds he wants
from the instrument he has had new
models constructed: the tenor nyckelharpa
is pitched a fourth lower than a
normal one, and has four rows of keys
and slightly slacker strings to create a
softer sound; the lute-nyckelharpa
was designed from a church painting.
But new instrument combinations
also lend further dimension to the
music. One of my favourite recordings
is Låtar, on which Hedin is joined by
organist Gunnar Idenstam; the bridled
power of the former and the roughness
of the latter create a priceless
blend of baroque music and Swedish
summers.
Johan Hedin belongs to the small
clique of world class Swedish folk
musicians who, over the past few decades,
have given a whole new dimension
to the nation’s folk music. His
collaboration with Ale Möller and
Jonas Knutsson in the Stockholm Folk
Big Band was groundbreaking in more
ways than one. In the trio Bazar Blå he
teams up with bassist Björn Meyer
and percussionist Fredrik Gille, and in
Luftstråk with Maria Kalaniemi and
Sven Ahlbäck. However, it could be
said that Johan Hedin comes well and
truly into his own in the really small
musical contexts: in duos and trios
and, not least, as a soloist. Innersta
Polskan is a collection of his own compositions
from 2004 centred around
the polska, and is in a way a follow-up
to his first solo album, Angel Archipelago,
from 1998. Many of the pieces
are idiosyncratic and possess a genuine
intimacy.‘‘I sometimes torture my
nyckelharpa,’’ he admits. ‘‘At times
so much that I fear the strings will
snap.’’
The Complete Works
of Eduard Tubin
A ceremonial signing took place recently in
Stockholm just in time to mark the 100 th anniversary
of Eduard Tubin’s birth, neatly anticipating
also the international Tubin festival
taking place across May and June in Estonia.
On April 26 th the International Eduard Tubin
Society together with representatives from several
Swedish music publishers were gathered
at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music to sign
an agreement that gives the Tubin Society publishing
rights to print a scientific edition of all
works by Eduard Tubin. Two volumes have now
been published – the first one including the 14
Preludes for Piano and the second volume also
containing piano compositions: the Ballade
(ETW 40) and Variations on an Estonian Folk
Tune. The international distribution will be
handled by Gehrmans Musikförlag, order@gehrmans.se
Eduard Tubin, born on
June 18 th in 1905 in
Estonia, fled to Sweden
1944 and received
Swedish citizenship in
1961. In 1962 he became
a member of
the Society of Swedish
Composers. He
died in Stockholm
1982. His oeuvre
includes, amongst
other works, ten
symphonies, two
operas and a ballet,
five concer-tos for various instruments, chamber
music, solo songs, choral music and incidental
music.
SÅ VILL JAG ÄLSKA DIG
17 songs
by Jan Sigurd
interpreted
by Anna-Mia Barwe
PSCD 159
Jan Sigurd divides
his time between the piano and the typewriter.
And they are not as far from each other as you
may think. Music and lyrics are closely linked in
Jan Sigurd’s world; these two moons circle
around each other, constantly changing places.
Jazz, also, is an important ingredient in this universe.
The instrumentalists, the choir and above
all the vocal soloist, Anna-Mia Barwe, display
their roots in jazz music while not being adverse
to other atmospheres.
Music Export Handbooks
As part of new EU cultural support programme (through
its pilot projects), the European Music Office has published
(together with its partners in the projects) six
Music Export Handbooks. Each handbook covers the
music industry in the six countries, providing all the important
addresses that will enable new contacts to be
established and for knowledge about each country’s musical
situation to be increased. Now available are the
handbooks for Brazil, France, Germany, the United Kingdom,
Japan and USA. On behalf of the Swedish MIC,
Export Music Sweden has been taking part in the production
of the handbook about Japan.
The handbooks are available for people involved in the
world of music in all EU countries. Swedish music companies
can send an e-mail to anita.turlock@stim.se in
order to obtain a digital copy. The handbooks only exist
in the form of digital files and therefore are not available
in printed paper versions.
NEW PUBLICATION
Svensk Jazz
2004/05
The new yearbook has
now been published, although
on this occasion it
appears in a slightly different
layout. Although the
intention of this year’s
yearbook remains to represent
jazz life in Sweden, this latest issue additionally
covers part of this year’s activities, an
overview of events to come in 2005 being included.
Over 120 new CDs containing Swedish
jazz were released in 2004 and all of them are
listed in the book. Most of the articles are in
Swedish but the majority of them will be translated
and published on www.jazzfacts.com, a
part of our website.
