confluence of the Fox and
Wabash
Rivers: Cattle drink from their watering
place on the
opposite bank, a flock of Carolina Parrakeets can be
seen settling in the mass of branches and vines at the
top of the scene, beneath a Bald Eagle perches
watchfully. After Karl Bodmer (1809 - 1893),
engraved by Sigismond Himely (1801-1866). Bodmer
accompanied
German explorer Prince Maximilian zuu
Wied-Neuwied from 1832
to 1834 on his Missouri
River expedition. He was hired as an artist by
Maximilian with the specific intent of travelling
through the American West and recording images of
cities, rivers,
towns and people they saw
along the way.

Engraving, printed on 18th century watermarked paper;
sheet 410 x 570mm (16 x 22½"). Trimmed, creased,
small tears to edges. Very rare.

Large view of the t 'Doric Temple' erected for f the
firework display celebrating the Treaty of Aix-la-
Succession, with detailed information about the
Chapelle whichh ended the War of the Austrian
display.
'This plate was engraved for the Board of Ordnance of
which Charles Frederick, F who had been Director of the
Antiquaries in 1737 when Vertue was formally
appointed Engraver to the Society, was a member. It
was originally intended i to bee part of a volume of
twenty plates of the Fireworkk Machine and
its
decorations which would have rivalled 'festival books'
such as that produced after the marriage off the Infanta
of
Spain in 1738' (Alexander). In the event only this
plate was published.
