New Lanark, breathtaking ancient woodlands line <strong>the</strong><br />

River Clyde as it flows through <strong>the</strong> gorge and over a<br />

series <strong>of</strong> spectacular waterfalls. Meet <strong>the</strong> residents<br />

on regular bat or badger walks and get a bird’s eye<br />

view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peregrine falcons. Woodland walks and<br />

Montrose Basin Visitor Centre & <strong>Wildlife</strong> Reserve<br />

The basin provides a plentiful supply <strong>of</strong> food and<br />

is a favourite destination for many birds, from eider<br />

ducks to pink-footed geese. In winter, migratory<br />

birds arrive en masse. Interactive displays bring <strong>the</strong><br />

history and creatures that live <strong>the</strong>re to life.<br />

By car<br />

Follow <strong>the</strong> signposts from <strong>the</strong> A9.<br />

The reserve is located 1.8 miles nor<strong>the</strong>ast<br />

<strong>of</strong> Dunkeld, just <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> A923 Blairgowrie<br />

road. Free car parking is available<br />

at <strong>the</strong> visitor centre.<br />

By public transport<br />

The nearest railway station is “Dunkeld<br />

and Birnam”. There are also bus stops<br />

in Dunkeld and Birnam.<br />

On foot<br />

Why not follow <strong>the</strong> Fungarth Path from Dunkeld<br />

which takes you to <strong>the</strong> loch? From <strong>the</strong>re it is<br />

only a short walk to <strong>the</strong> visitor centre.<br />

For disabled visitors<br />

The visitor centre is wheelchair friendly including<br />

toilet facilities. An induction loop is fitted.<br />

Explore <strong>the</strong> visitor centre, set on <strong>the</strong> edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> loch, which<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers many unique and wonderful experiences, from watching<br />

nesting osprey and o<strong>the</strong>r wetland birds to spotting red squirrels<br />

and discovering what lives under <strong>the</strong> water’s surface in <strong>the</strong> loch.<br />

Our visitor centre has interactive exhibitions telling <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Loch</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lowes</strong>, its history, wildlife and its osprey.<br />

See <strong>the</strong> magnificent wild osprey as <strong>the</strong>y return each March from<br />

Africa to <strong>the</strong>ir breeding home on <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> loch. Our main<br />

observation hide <strong>of</strong>fers a bird’s eye view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> osprey at <strong>the</strong>ir eyrie<br />

(nest) and if you are lucky, you may even see one fishing on <strong>the</strong> loch.<br />

Discover <strong>the</strong> story <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘Lady <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Loch</strong>’, possibly <strong>the</strong><br />

world’s most famous osprey. Learn about <strong>the</strong> dangers and traumas<br />

she has overcome, and her amazing 20 years <strong>of</strong> breeding success.<br />

Find out <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> osprey in Scotland. Now with 200 osprey<br />

pairs, <strong>the</strong>y are one <strong>of</strong> Scotland’s conservation success stories.<br />

Watch <strong>the</strong> eggs hatch from May onwards and <strong>the</strong> chicks<br />

being fed before your very eyes on our live HD camera. You can<br />

watch this amazing sight from <strong>the</strong> visitor centre, as well as from<br />

<strong>the</strong> comfort <strong>of</strong> your own home, via our live web-feed! A team <strong>of</strong><br />

dedicated volunteers keep <strong>the</strong> osprey under 24-hour surveillance to<br />

protect <strong>the</strong> eggs and young.<br />

Our visitor centre <strong>of</strong>fers free all-day parking and is fully accessible<br />

with disabled parking available 20 yards from <strong>the</strong> entrance.<br />

Follow <strong>the</strong> Fungarth Path from nearby Dunkeld to <strong>Loch</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Lowes</strong>. This short country walk, beautiful all year round, allows you to<br />

take in <strong>the</strong> sights and smells <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stunning Perthshire countryside.<br />

Discover what lives under <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> loch and<br />

spot otters frolicking in <strong>the</strong> water in search <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir supper.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> early mornings keep your eye out for deer as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

forage amongst <strong>the</strong> trees.<br />

watch magnificent<br />

osprey fish on <strong>the</strong> loch<br />

Enjoy seeing beautiful water birds that nest at <strong>the</strong> loch, from<br />

wigeon and moorhen to mallards and great crested grebes.<br />

Observe <strong>the</strong>se birds up close with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> powerful telescopes<br />

and binoculars provided in our three dedicated observation hides.<br />

Spot red squirrels from <strong>the</strong> viewing window in our refurbished<br />

visitor centre. The red squirrel is now considered endangered,<br />

but here on <strong>the</strong> reserve families <strong>of</strong> red squirrels visit our feeders,<br />

much to <strong>the</strong> delight <strong>of</strong> our visitors! You’ll also be able to see<br />

woodland birds such as treecreepers, siskins and greater spotted<br />

woodpeckers that all make great use <strong>of</strong> our feeders.<br />
