St. John’s New Pep Band Creates a New Sound!
West Islip, NY
This year will see the inauguration of the St. John the Baptist Pep Band, a new performing group set to play at
a variety of sporting and school events throughout the year. The SJB Pep Band is a redirection of the previous
Marching Band, and will allow students to study a larger breadth of music and perfect their performing skills. It
includes all Concert Band and Wind Ensemble members in grades 9-12 who are willing to participate and
perform.
The SJB Pep Band, under the co-direction of Mr. Tom Barna and Ms. Heather Stein, hopes to infuse a spirit and
musicality into the SJB community. Music teacher Mr. Barna speaks of his own enthusiasm, saying “The band
members are excited by this new direction. We hope this excitement will carry over to the rest of the St. John’s
community.” Ms. Stein agrees, stating that she “thinks that this new program will become an integral part of
SJB school spirit.”
At press time, the Pep Band will be performing at all home football and basketball games. It will “rock the
house” and raise Cougar Spirit even more!
