There are a myriad of primal pleasures that render 

me helpless to resist. Stolen afternoon naps, buttery 

toffee, romantic comedies, ivory roses, a foot massage, 

a cricket’s chirp... and candles. There is something 

about the flickering firelight that evokes tranquility, 

conjuring an innate sense of well-being. I am 

celebratory when a cord of hickory is stacked behind 

the porch, forecasting the eminent evenings spent 

before crackling embers. 

Candles are ever-present in my days. A steamy 

bath retreat when accompanied by classical music 

and Trapp’s Water Candle No. 20 (p.38) is soothing 

therapy for the body and soul. Our laughter-filled 

kitchen is unquestionably the result of our hazelnutpraline 

candle (p.13) competing with the aroma of 

the oven’s casserole. A candle offers the comforting 

security of home, invites meditation, and absorbs stress 

while inspiring creative thought. A french lavender 

travel candle (below) accompanies me on my journeys 

via suitcase to the hotel room when I’m missing my 

familiar old bed. And just as the waft of a distinctive 

perfume may remind us of someone, so does fragrance 

muster nostalgic moods. Candles are empowered to 

sway the spirit to a dreamy place to which only our 

subconscious has been given directions. Let them lead

"POEMS I N G L A S S" Emile Gallé (1846-1904) 

The beloved artist was the son of a glassmaker in Nancy, France. After 

serving in the French-Prussian War, he applied his love of botany to 

his father's business, creating a signature glass that consisted of three 

layers of cameo glass in floral motifs. Eventually he created his own 

business and was recognized at numerous international exhibitions for 

his work and was directing new designs from his deathbed. Though his 

widow and son-in-law continued the glass making for several decades 

using his methods, they honored him by using a star after his signature 

to indicate pieces created after his death. Gallé had an instrumental 

influence upon the Art Nouveau movement.
