«Για να παραμείνει ο κινηματογράφος ζωντανός θα έπρεπε
να επινοεί τα πάντα από την αρχή.», έλεγε ο Ρενουάρ. Ακολουθώντας
την φράση του, που βρίσκεται στον πυρήνα του
σκεπτικού της φετινής 50 ης διοργάνωσης απευθύναμε μια
ανοιχτή πρόσκληση σε καλλιτεχνικές ομάδες της πόλης ζητώντας
τους να εμπνευστούν από το φετινό γενέθλιο θέμα
του φεστιβάλ και να δημιουργήσουν κινηματογράφο εκεί
που δεν το περιμένεις με τον πιο αναπάντεχο τρόπο. Τους
ζητήσαμε να αφήσουν την φαντασία τους ελεύθερη και να
εκπλήξουν την πόλη. Η συμμετοχή ήταν τεράστια. Προτάσεις
έξυπνες, ζωντανές που ανανεώνουν και απαντούν με
τον καλύτερο τρόπο στο ερώτημα του Why cinema now?
που είναι και το κεντρικό «σύνθημα» της φετινής χρονιάς.
Εικαστικοί, performers, μουσικοί, street artists και χορευτές,
μια βδομάδα πριν και κυρίως κατά την διάρκεια του
φεστιβάλ ξεχύνονται στην Θεσσαλονίκη δημιουργώντας
ένα παράδοξο κινηματογραφικό χάρτη. Ένα ολόκληρο φεστιβάλ
μέσα στο φεστιβάλ που θα γιορτάσει τα 50 α γενέθλια
με τρόπο δημιουργικό και ουσιαστικό. Σχεδόν 30 διαφορετικές
δράσεις θα καταλάβουν δρόμους, πλατείες, δημόσια
κτίρια, ταράτσες πολυκατοικιών, καφέ, μέσα μαζικής
μεταφοράς κτλ. δημιουργώντας ένα διάλογο του κινηματογράφου
με τις άλλες τέχνες στον δημόσιο χώρο.

To paraphrase Renoir, for cinema to remain alive it must
re-invent everything from scratch. Staying true to these
words, which lie at the core of the philosophy behind this
year’s 50th edition of the event, we issued an open invitation
to artistic groups throughout the city, asking them
to draw inspiration from the festival’s special anniversary
theme and create cinema in unexpected places and in the
most unanticipated of ways. We asked them to let their
imaginations loose and surprise the city. The response was
overwhelming. Clever and lively suggestions inundated us,
ideas which in the best manner possible expanded on and
provided possible answers to the question of ‘Why cinema
now?’ which also happened to be the main slogan of this
year’s event. Visual artists, performers, musicians, street
artists and dancers poured into the streets of Thessaloniki
starting one week before the opening of the festival,
their ranks growing even stronger during the course of its
run. All this created a somewhat contradictory cinematic
map-an entire festival within the official, regular festival
celebrating its 50th birthday, and this whole undertaking
carried out in a most creative and substantial way. Nearly
30 distinct events took over streets, squares, public buildings,
apartment block rooftops, cafes, public transport and
other places, creating a dialogue between cinema and
other arts in the public space.
