σύνθημα το ερώτημα Why Cinema Now?
It’s Thessaloniki’s Festival. The Festival is Thessaloniki.
City and celebration are indivisible: for fifty years
now, the one has meant the other. On this, the Thessaloniki
Film Festival’s 50th anniversary, and a year in
which we pose the question “Why Cinema Now?”, we have
resolved to tie the bond still tighter, to wrap the whole
city up in celluloid, to take film out of the auditorium and
turn it into action. We want our everyday life imbued with
movie fantasy; we want our city scenes to acquire a touch
of filmic unpredictability. We want to see life from a different
camera angle, with a new script, in glorious Technicolor
and with a soundtrack. And to do that, we turned
once more to the city. The actions that make up “street
cinema”, a series of happenings to celebrate the Festival’s
first half century, are to be staged by local groupsincandescent
cores of thought, imagination, creativity
and subversion-in whose company all of us for whom the
cinema is our life will turn life into cinema. So let’s enjoy
with them the fruit of their innovation and passion; let’s
quit the dark and take to the streets to live an experience
that redefines cinema’s relationship with the city and the
way we relate to both. Let everything be cinema, and us
its viewers and protagonists both.
Don’t be taken aback if you happen to be waiting
in a queue at your local tax office and suddenly
see a couple straight out of the Fifties fiendishly
dancing to the rhythms of swing just like in the movies, or
if you’re just driving along and see floating money around
a ‘60s convertible car, it’ll all just mean that you’re in
Thessaloniki and that the Internatiional Film Festival is
underway.
This year we wanted to rethink the relationship between
the festival and the city, between the cinema and reality
and the world of the dream, so we made it our goal
to promote the festival in ways that would be original
and would transform the city itself into a cinema. Thus,
our aim was to take cinema out into the street: Cinema
everywhere, cinema unexpectedly leaping out from reality,
cinema like a crack where you wouldn’t expect it to
be, coming out of anything and flooding into the city at
any given moment, even in spots where the festival has
difficulty reaching.

To paraphrase Renoir, for cinema to remain alive it must
re-invent everything from scratch. Staying true to these
words, which lie at the core of the philosophy behind this
year’s 50th edition of the event, we issued an open invitation
to artistic groups throughout the city, asking them
to draw inspiration from the festival’s special anniversary
theme and create cinema in unexpected places and in the
most unanticipated of ways. We asked them to let their
imaginations loose and surprise the city. The response was
overwhelming. Clever and lively suggestions inundated us,
ideas which in the best manner possible expanded on and
provided possible answers to the question of ‘Why cinema
now?’ which also happened to be the main slogan of this
year’s event. Visual artists, performers, musicians, street
artists and dancers poured into the streets of Thessaloniki
starting one week before the opening of the festival,
their ranks growing even stronger during the course of its
run. All this created a somewhat contradictory cinematic
map-an entire festival within the official, regular festival
celebrating its 50th birthday, and this whole undertaking
carried out in a most creative and substantial way. Nearly
30 distinct events took over streets, squares, public buildings,
apartment block rooftops, cafes, public transport and
other places, creating a dialogue between cinema and
other arts in the public space.
Two lovers kissing. Cinema has depicted this image so many
times and in so many different ways. Sfina place this cinematic
image in a dialogue with the Magritte painting of the
same name.
The members of the Sfina artistic team offer their own depiction
of René Magritte’s painting The Lovers, a work that belongs to
a small group of paintings the artist created in Paris in 1927-
1928. In these works, Magritte attempts to conceal the identities
of the figures through the use of pieces of cloth; the heads
of both the man and the woman are covered by mysterious
fabrics in shades of grey, and the two figures attempt to kiss.
Sfina appear in an unanticipated place at an unexpected time
and paint this famous work using their human canvas.

This work is an imaginary ‘set’/installation that combines elements
from four films and creates a new space within the one
already existing, thus making it impossible for the passer-by/
viewer not to participate. The films were selected on the basis
of either style or narrative structure.
The House of Po is an architectural floor plan of an imaginary
house, in which its spaces (rooms) and a number of the objects
found within these (like furniture and electrical appliances) have
been demarcated. In some of these rooms, simple installations
and lines taken from screenplays refer the participant to the
following films:
The Great Dictator (1940)
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998)
Dogville (2003)
Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (The Εdukators) (2004)
All these films tackle socio-political issues, projecting different
aspects of reality through the use of resounding contrasts (in
other words, reality as is and reality as viewed through the eyes
of the protagonist).

της ιστοσελίδας του BookCrossing.com.
BOOKCROSSING
b o o k c r o s s e r s
Thessaloniki’s own BookCrossers ‘liberate’ the older editions
of the International Film Festival and follow the adventures
of the routes taken by books in the city.
Fahrenheit 451, the classic film by François Truffaut based on
the Ray Bradbury novel of the same name, lies in contradistinction
to the global BookCrossing movement. BookCrossing is the
activity of leaving a book behind on a public bench, in a cafe, at
a monument, in a cinema and wherever else one can think of,
and then electronically monitoring the trip taken by the book as
it passes from one reader to the next. This takes place though
the website www.bookcrossing.com.
In the future world of Fahrenheit 451, books are burnt; in the
present one of BookCrossing, books are released into the wild
so as to find their next reader. This, because reading is what the
cinema is, too: A great, endless trip.

city, listening to the thoughts of people through the ‘walls’.
An airborne choreography in the city at dawn.
The film Wings of Desire, a poetic elegy directed by Wim Wenders,
provides the source of inspiration for this event. As in the
film, reference is made not only to the Berlin Wall, but to all
walls that divide and separate people, to all walls in which human
thoughts nestle, to all walls that hinder love.
Inside a building located in one of the city’s central neighbourhoods,
two creatures / angels dangle like two incubating cocoons,
through the technical support of two specially trained
climbers whose bodies function as a counterweight to the bodies
of the dancers.
The sonic landscape is the city, which drowns within the sounds
of human thoughts. These sounds awaken the two beings, which
begin to listen attentively to the building, become activated and
move into motion with a ‘vocabulary’ that is exclusively theirs, in
a vertical relationship with the building, in a vertical dance. Two
bodies pulsating from the decibels of human thoughts, which
lie in contrast to the urban noise. From up high they observe the
fragile earthly reality and are attracted by it. Eros, whether magical
lie or magical truth, lures the angels to our terrestrial world.
As the event concludes, the angels / dancers leave behind their
airy clothing and fall from the building using a rappelling technique.
They touch the ground and are lost in the crowd, like lovestruck
fallen angels.

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT HER
If at some point you’ve ever dreamt of staging a screening
on the rooftop of your block of flats, then Vangelis Kolotsios’
event will certainly grant you your wish. The futuristic images
of Metropolis meet the pop sensibilities of Two or Three
Things I Know About Her in a screening about the change to
and the evolution of the urban landscape. One block of flats
becomes a cinema, and two films about the city converse
with Thessaloniki itself.
The installation includes two films: The futuristic-looking Metropolis,
under the authority of the overseer, the sole tyrant commanding
both machine and development; and, the pop-tinged
Two or Three Things I Know About Her, ruled by a contemporary
society led by multiple choice, consumption and the mask of
modernisation. This unique pairing draws out various issues and
raises many points, which could be interpreted by the viewer in
a variety of ways (as can occur in the case of almost any film).
The visitor walks inside the block of flats, juxtaposing it with the
world found in his or her mind, as the installation forms a course
/ evolution with a beginning, middle and end. This is rearranged
according to the direction chosen-from the Entrance of questioning,
to the Lift of the Word, to the Rooftop of the society of
the spectacle and the areas of consumption (and the reverse).

Through the photo lens, the imaginary world of Mary Poppins
becomes entangled with the real world, the world of today, and
is reshaped into a contemporary story. In contrast to the stereotypical
The cinema, which is a series of two-dimensional excerpts of
time, reproduces movement in an illusory manner. It can surpass
its dimensions and unite time and space in an instant.
Sfina and 100 cameras offer their take on the matter.
Sfina breaks fresh ground this year as well and teams up with
Hatzakis Photography and Real Creations in order to stop time.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the International Film Festival
of Thessaloniki, on the day of the event the group will create
images using an innovative filming technique called Τime
Splice. This was first used in the filming of Μatrix, and it lines
up 100 digital cameras to create truly three-dimensional photography.
Shooting will take place at the Yeni Tzami, and the procedure
will be open to the public.

The 6daEXIt improvisation and performance team create a live
the screening of a collage made up of scenes from various films
that deal with the experience of hearing music (people playing
or even just listening to music, shown as they react to it). This
is not a silent film performance with live music; rather, it could
be labelled a live multimedia ‘commentary’. It offers a redefinition
of the cinematic image and the frameworks that this presupposes,
through sound, movement and painting, as well as
through the open participation of the real listeners in the area
of the installation.

Ο Frankie
To Lindy Hop Greece,
SWINGIΝ’ CINEMA
This team brought swing back into fashion, putting on the
most unpredictable of parties. Inspired by La vie en rose,
Grease and When Frankie Met Fred, they burst into public
service offices, bowling centres and cinema halls, shaking up
the steady flow of everyday life.
The spread of Lindy Hop in American and international mainstream
culture occurred, to a great degree, on account of four
factors: Hollywood films; dance studios and coaches like Arthur
Murray; touring dance groups; and, ordinary people (eg US World
War Two military personnel who brought Lindy Hop to other
countries). One of the most important exponents of Lindy Hop
in Hollywood was Dean Collins.
According to the myth on the origins and early history of swing,
Dean Collins picked up the Lindy Hop in the Savoy Ballroom
and from there took the dance as far as the US West Coast. He
danced in a series of Hollywood films that quickly established
the popularity of swing music and dance. Frankie Manning and
other African-American dancers also appeared in key films of
that period, one that has been considered the starting-point of
the art of the cinema.
Lindy Hop Greece, which represents this dance as well as every
other type of performance dance, presents dramatised scenes
reproduced from Grease, La Mome and Swing Kids, in addition
to Lindy Hop swing dance scenes from films made in the Twenties
all the way up to Marilyn Manson video clips.

| 46 The Beforelight team arrive to prove that cinema can be
linked with any other art or science whatsoever-even with
radiography. The x-ray event gives flesh and blood (and even
more so bones) to the most famous stars of world cinema.
Using a special technique, full-body photographs of beloved
stars are transformed into peculiar x-rays, thus offering the
public an entirely different view of things.
Radiography (anatomy of the body) and cinema (anatomy of
movement) were born at the same time, in 1895, and upon
making their appearance amazed the public at the turn of the
19th century. The early viewers would leave theatres not only
because they thought a train was heading straight for them, but
also because a human skeleton could be seen walking behind
a curtain!
Their common road soon forked, with radiography taking the
path of science and cinema that of popular entertainment.
Now, their roads cross again and we see, for the first time, cinema
stars receiving flesh and blood (and bones, most of all), in
a Thessaloniki transformed into a dark projection hall, to the
delight of festival viewers!
2008), Tea with Musolini (Franco Zefirelli, 1999), The Bitter Tea
of General Yen (Frank Capra, 1932) κ.ά.
TEA CEREMONY
Ε λ έ ν η Τσ α ο υ σ ά κ η E l e n i Ts a o u s a k i
A mystic performance chock-full of humour delivered by
harpist Eleni Tsaousaki, who takes your order in the tearooms
of the city. The menu combines a contemporary work for the
harp with tea-related scenes from the cinema (British and
Japanese), and their associated flavours.
As is apparent from the title, the Tea Ceremony is inspired by
the ritual surrounding the preparation and consumption of tea.
Catherine Kontz’s composition for solo harp comprises 40 small
squares that include musical instructions and information for
the harpist. The score is presented in the form traditionally associated
with Japanese Manga comics and this allows for multiple
readings of the material.
The performance of the work will take place at Zoyia, an establishment
that is synonymous to the word ‘tea’, and will be accompanied
by a ‘catalogue - menu’ of different cinema scenes
related to tea. A small sample of the films providing scenes
includes Tea Fight (Wang Yeming, 2008), Tea with Mussolini
(Franco Zeffirelli, 1999) and The Bitter Tea of General Yen (Frank
Capra, 1933). Each cinema scene corresponds to a certain type
of tea and, by extension, to some of the squares of the music
piece; these are then considered to be an order that has
been placed. Following this, musical fragments of the work are
performed whenever tearoom customers ask for that particular
type of tea. In the end, the work is heard in its entirety, thus
wholly rendering the music of the Tea Ceremony, combining all
of the cinema scenes on the menu.

‘‘It was a regular afternoon in the centre of Thessaloniki, and I
was walking amongst strangers, trying to finish up in time some
of the tasks that pop up every day and need to be taken care
of. Coming out along with the continuous grey sound of car and
motorcycle engines I also heard notes, notes that were lively,
slow, intense, calm, notes from a violin, notes from drums…
and then I also heard words, words coming out of crystalline
voices, everyday voices, female voices, male voices, voices of
anger, laughter… notes and words from films… And then I saw
colours… Yellow, red, orange, black, blue, green, white perfectly
round open umbrellas. Umbrellas that were joyous, optimistic,
umbrellas that were on colourful bicycles…And I remembered
the bicycle lane I’d first seen a couple of days before, and I
thought how noiseless the bicycle is, and how much it reminded
me of my buried childishness, taking me back on a trip to carefree
times. I saw a lot of bicyclists together, with all of those
umbrellas and film soundtracks…All of these together were so
similar, with the bicycles and the umbrellas, but at the same
time so different, as they were women, men, children, young
people, people who were middle-aged, advanced in years, all
of them were together…so as to remind me of scenes, images,
snapshots in which a bicycle or an umbrella is the protagonist,
in its very own big or small still. And I felt myself breathing-in an
air that was different; something’s happening out there, something
different is happening in the city.”

viewers. The cinema meets Plato’s Myth of the Cave, in an
interactive installation by Nikos Iavazzo.
This work is an installation made up of two rooms, which are
separated by a cloth. In one of the rooms there is a light projector
that sends its light towards the cloth, which lies directly opposite.
In the other room, there is a wooden platform that faces
towards the cloth. The public plays a fundamental role in this
installation. There are various objects in the room with the projector;
the public has access to these objects and is able to use
them in the aim of creating a role that will be projected upon
the cloth, in the form of a shadow. The members of the public on
the other side of the installation, being viewers / observers, follow
the two-dimensional protagonists in the other room as they
move upon the cloth. In this way, the one minute someone can
be directing and starring in various roles, hidden behind his or
her shadow, and the next be seated on the platform as a viewer,
observing someone else’s efforts to direct.
Through this work, reference is made to two realities: The twodimensional
reality of the shadows projected in real time upon
the cloth; and, the tangible reality of the active participation of
the public in a role-playing game.

PROJECT ODYSSEYS
Α 4 Μ
| 88 Alongside its other activities, the Street Cinema project welcomes
the A4M experimental performance arts research
group and its especially interesting Project Odysseys, a sitespecific
promenade performance that meets the cinema by
way of another road.
This is an ‘ambulant’ performance that combines different art
forms, such as visual and sonic arts, installations and live music,
but also different theatre techniques like physical theatre,
opera and acrobatics, among others. Project Odysseys selects
the public areas of the city as its field of activity. The city is
transformed into a living organism in which the everyday becomes
non-everyday and the familiar surrenders its place to the
unknown and the mysterious. Dusty walls half-knocked down by
former times, old railway lines that lead to nowhere, stories of
the city that come to life before our eyes, doors that we didn’t
open and human stories that were fermented with the past and
left to fizzle out into oblivion. Inspired by the Homeric epic, the
viewer is invited-as another Odysseus-to perambulate in the
city of Thessaloniki, discover treasures, meet whatever is different
and be guided in corresponding adventures comparable
to those experienced by the Homeric hero. The viewer is called
upon to follow a series of live images and walk in both real and
mental streets in the city, in space and in time.
At the same time, some of the viewers use a camera to record
the performance / journey itself, thus creating their own Odyssey,
their own document, through the choices they themselves
make.
The Odysseys is not a performance-it is a life experience.

a good time-the sort of events that take place in the world’s
metropolises.
The OTHERWISE project seeks to create experimental conditions
through music, dance, design, the world and maximising our potential
to communicate with it.
The OTHERWISE project isn’t just another club party-it’s an artbased
party!
And Block 33 is the ideal venue: a converted industrial space
combined with music, photography, painting, video art and any
other art-form you can think of.
The next OTHERWISE project will be on Sunday 15 November
at 19.00 and will host all the groups which participated in the
project Street Cinema.
