we value integrity Board of Regents Chairman Ken Bartlett swears in Betty J.C. Wright for her third 7-year term on the Board. Wright began her tenure on the Board of Regents on July 1, 1991. We Value Integrity The institution maintains fair, honest, accurate and consistent policies and procedures monitored by measures of institutional effectiveness to ensure credible actions are taken to further a diverse learning-centered environment of individuality and collegiality. EmPower Trains Students A partner effort with EmPower and EmPower Works provides ongoing life and skills training to its students. Students in internship opportunities were placed at 26 sites, contributing 7,350 hours of services with a minimum value of $27,852. College Celebrates Diversity RSC Staff assisted the City of Midwest City in the organization of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast. Dr. Shenethia Manuel was the chair for the event. The Office of Intercultural Communications & Education hosted events during the academic year highlighting Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Intercultural Day and Native American History. A forum was also held that brought together a panel of female leaders from the community. RSC to Host Exhibit in 2011 As one of more than 60 institutions selected to host the second national tour of “Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln’s Journey to Emancipation” exhibit, Rose State College will receive a $1,000 grant to fund the tour. The exhibit will be showcased at the RSC Learning Resources Center on campus beginning in September 2011. Joe Cole Reappointed Joe Cole was reappointed by Gov. Brad Henry to the Rose State College Board of Regents. He is serving his fourth term on the Board. Programs Are Reaccredited The Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene Associate in Applied Science Programs had an external accreditation visit in September 2005. The College was notified in February 2006 that both programs were approved for reaccreditation. 12 Rose State College President’s Report to the Community | 2005-2006
Office Administers Grant Corporate Relations and Workforce Education has taken responsibility to administer the Economic Development Grant received by the institution in the fall 2005 semester. This grant of $150,000 will be divided into a two-year program to develop opportunities for an aerospace contract training program, which will train small businesses in Oklahoma how to obtain federal grants. Grant Aids Nursing Students Rose State College was awarded a $170,161 grant by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for nursing scholarships. This was the 4th year the College received this grant. The Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students Program provide assistance to full-time, financially needy students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are enrolled in nursing programs. Maria Chacon, Randy Pluto and Crystal Freeman, were honored with James Axley Creative Writing Awards. Global Features Scandinavia On October 8, 2005, a large crowd enjoyed the 17th annual Global Oklahoma, a festival of cultures, which featured Scandinavia. The cultures of the world were celebrated through art and exhibits provided by the community and local residents. Ken Bartlett Chairs Board Ken Bartlett serves as Chair of the Rose State College Board of Regents and on the Board of Directors of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). Professor Exhibits Artwork Art Professor Suzanne Thomas taught classes for Studio Mid-Del in October 2005 and exhibited her own work in a group show focusing on local/regional African- American artists at the Independent Arts of Oklahoma (IAO) Gallery during the fall semester. RSC Honors 14 Teachers The 5th annual Golden Apple Awards were handed out on November 15, 2005, with RSC honoring 14 kindergarten through high school teachers who had been nominated with essays from currently enrolled RSC students. Dr. Bill Brown, who retired in December 2005, was recognized with a Golden Apple Award for coordinating the program. Event Attracts Poetry Lovers Poetry at Rose attracted more than 150 poetry lovers to the annual event in late January 2006. At the event, three students, Weekend Improves Skills Spanish Professor Eddie Gert offered his second Spanish Immersion Weekend in April 2006. Gert and 13 students spent the weekend in a hunting lodge near Shawnee, shopping, cooking and making presentations only speaking Spanish. Each year Rose State College issues a poster for Global Oklahoma – a festival of cultures celebration held in October. Scandinavia was featured for 2005. 13
