Long Ashton Golf Club LATEST NEWS - APRIL 2015 CAPTAIN’S NEWS Greetings to all members and staff of Long Ashton Golf Club. My first newsletter as Captain so thought it appropriate to say “Hello” to all from the outset and offer my thanks for bestowing upon me the honour of being Captain of our fine Club. I feel very privileged and will do my utmost over the coming year to represent the members and the Club in the best possible manner. In particular I would like to say thank-you to our former Captain, Charles Pitcher and his wife, Jan who have been extremely supportive to me as Vice-Captain in the past year. I am sure we would all agree that Charles has done a superb job over the past year as Captain – and has left me a very hard act to follow. My Captain’s Installation Dinner took place on Friday, March 13th and I’m delighted to say that, despite a rather long silence when the President asked if there were any objections, my appointment was confirmed ! I think it’s fair to say that the evening went very well and my thanks to all concerned, particularly Mr. John Lochrie, our M.C. for the evening. The Captain’s Drive sweepstake was won by Dale Peacock who guessed correctly 158yds – obviously one of my Sunday best !! Unfortunately it was played on a Saturday !! Well we are now into the season proper with team competitions and individual competitions lining up to challenge us - so best wishes to one and Tom Stanton - tomstanton03@gmail.com all. Already the course is looking great and will be offering even more of a challenge, I am sure, over the next month or two. For the past few months I have been accompanying Mr. Roger Woolf, at the interviews for new members and I am pleased to say that there are quite a few new golfers joining our Club. They are of various handicaps but all have been excellent candidates and will, I am in no doubt, strengthen our membership. So to all our new members - Welcome gentlemen to Long Ashton G. C. The season has just started and I hope we will all support the various sections within our Club and the various teams representing Long Ashton in competitions. Already we have reason to celebrate in that our Junior Teams have done us proud in the Junior Team County Championship held on April 3rd at Gloucester Golf Club: - 1st Long Ashton (Alex Giles; Will Lewis; Nathan Moore) 2nd Chipping Sodbury 3rd Long Ashton (Isaac Feltham; Louis Ross; Milan Reed) Congratulations ! A superb result which means our winners qualify for the National Final in August. As above demonstrates we have an excellent junior section and we need to support them so may I remind you all that the Junior Trust Fund Day will be held on May 23rd – please support them in every and any way you can. LADY CAPTAIN’S REPORT
Jan Pitcher - jan.pitcher@icloud.com
Time has marched on and it doesn’t seem that a
year has passed since our new greens have been
in play. Winter was the testing time and James
and his team have done a great job in keeping the
whole course playable during the winter month
- on behalf of the Ladies Section, thanks! Roll on
summer and those longer daylight hours.
The last of our fun competitions was played on
12 March with the usual good turnout. Thank you
to all ladies for your support during the winter
months (and we had dire conditions at times!)
which all helped benefit my chosen charity -
Springboard.
The final of the Winter Foursomes Knockout was
played on 17 Mar - Rosemary Lawson and Jane
Buckland played extremely well together beating
Sue Whitaker and me on the 15th. Congratulations
and well done to Rosemary and Jane!
A couple of mixed competitions to report on
during March: Firstly, the Mixed Friendly away
match scheduled for Sun 29 March against
Clevedon GC was unfortunately cancelled – wind
and rain is not a good mix and it is supposed to
be fun! However, I do thank all those who put
their names down and were actually willing to
play even in gale force conditions. Clevedon are
looking at an alternative date so please keep
an eye on the notice boards for a new date.
Secondly, there was a good turnout for the Easter
Mixed competition which was played in glorious
sunshine. Congratulations to the winners Danielle
and Sam Williams and to the runners up John
and Sheila Beringer. Well done to all competitors
- judging by the atmosphere in the dining room
afterwards obviously a day enjoyed by all. My
thanks go to Marlene Brunet for organising such a
smooth running day.
The Alliance (BDLGA) matches begin this month
with a home fixture against B&C ‘B’ on Mon 13
Apr. Gwen Spear is our Captain of the ‘A’ team
for this year and Chris Kakar our Captain of the
‘B’ team - a big thank you to both Gwen and Chris
for taking on these roles. Good luck to all team
members in their forthcoming matches!
Finally, to all those members recovering from ill
health and/or injuries over the winter period we
hope you are now well on the road to recovery
and as the weather warms up we look forward to
seeing you back on the golf course.

JUNIOR NEWS
Junior Target Golf
Monday 2nd March – 75 yards (into wind)
This was our final event of the winter and was well
attended with 8 juniors taking part. The pairings
were drawn out of the hat and the prize winners
were:-
1st Nathan Moore and Josh Ball – 350 points
2nd Isaac Feltham and Milan Reed – 320 points
Bob Brookes held a fun quiz after in the bar,
testing the juniors on all that they had learnt over
the winter and the results were very impressive.
Thanks Bob for giving up so much of your time.
Andi Moore - andreajmoore@btinternet.com
Will Lewis and Louis Ross led the team off and in a
closely fought match finally won on the 18th 2 up.
The new Gloucestershire U14 players Josh Hewitt
and Isaac Feltham played some inspired golf to
win their match 7&6, unaware that Luke Donald
had been watching their opening holes!! Sam and
Max held on bravely for as long as they could but
their opponents finally overcame them with a 4&3
win.
LA won by 2 matches to 1.
Junior Team Golf
Wow, what a start to the season.
Sunday March 22nd – B&C v LA
Our first match was the first round of the Bristol
and District Cup, away to Bristol and Clifton.
When this match was arranged back in November
it seemed a sensible date. No-one knew then that
Bristol City would secure a trip to Wembley, and
that Gloucestershire would organize an U18 boys
fixture against the Gloucestershire ladies.
A big thank you goes to Sam Jackson who stood
in at the last minute, when he should have been
revising for his GCSE’s and to Max Boggia who was
playing in his first match for the club.
THE MARTIN
HURRELL PARTNERSHIP
WEALTH MANAGEMENT CONSULTANTS
Proud to support Long Ashton Golf Club
Tuesday March 29th – Henbury v LA
Our first league match of the season was held on
the second day of the Easter holidays, away at
Henbury. The previous day Henbury had won the
Alexander Trophy competition, so the team were
naturally a little apprehensive about the standard
of the opposition. Their fears were unfounded
though with some good solid play from all players.
Will Lewis, captain for the day, played the full 18
holes in his halved match against the Henbury
captain. Sam Harrison also played all 18 to win
his match on the last hole, while Sam Williams
made an impressive debut for the team winning
his match comfortably by 5&3. Josh Ball, fresh
from a handicap cut the previous day, was still
clearly in good form winning his match 4&3, while
Milan Reed was up against one of the Henbury
stars from the previous day and just lost out in his
match by 3&2.
LA won by 3.5 matches to 1.5
Gloucestershire County Teams – Friday April 3rd
Long Ashton entered two teams into this annual
event to determine the club that represents
Gloucestershire in the National Finals. The venue
this year was Gloucester GC, with the players
scheduled to play 36 holes. The format was the
best two stableford scores from each team to
count in the morning and then the best two scores
in the afternoon.
An early start from Bristol for our low
handicappers, saw them teeing of just after 8am,
on a dull wet morning. Within a few holes though,
they were called back in, as the greens were
waterlogged. After a long wait in the club house,
the decision was taken to reduce the competition
to 18 holes and to start again at 11am. This
probably suited our younger players as they found
the wet ground on the opening 9 holes very heavy
going.
From our first team, Nathan Moore was first back
with 32 points which disappointed him slightly.
However with Alex Giles returning 40 points and
Will Lewis 39 points, his spirits soon recovered.

There was a very tense wait then for the next
couple of hours, as score after score was posted
on the new online system, to see if they would be
caught.
Our younger team of Milan Reed (26 pts), Louis
Ross (30), and Isaac Feltham (43), pushed them
hard, finally finishing in third place, and Chipping
Sodbury 2 managed three good scores to finish
in second, but the earlier score of 79 was good
enough to secure Long Ashton as the Junior
Champion Club, for Gloucestershire.
Their reward is a trip to the national finals at
Frilford Heath on August 10th/11th while for the
club there is the honour of hosting next year’s
event on Good Friday 2016.
Individual News
• Several juniors from the club have taken part in
County events recently
o Will Lewis captained the U14 team that
played Cornwall on Weds April 1st. Josh
Hewitt and Isaac Feltham made their debuts
for the county that day.
o Nathan Moore and Ronnie Mitchell played for
the U18’s in their annual match against the
County Ladies, on March 22nd. Alex Giles was
playing in the ladies team that day and won
both her matches, as the ladies beat the boys
by 5.5 to 2.5
• Ebonie Lewis won the Droitwich Junior Open
• Nathan Moore shot 71 on the Roman Road
course at Celtic Manor to win the U15 Welsh
open qualifier by 8 shots. He will now compete
in the final on the 2010 course on the 27th July.

SENIOR’S NEWS
The season has well and truly started with two
more competitions and one match already played.
The Moran Cup was won by John Beringer and
Gareth Wilson and The Manley James was won by
Graham Foster and Phil Key well done to all of you.
Phil Key and Gerry Taggart (who came second in
the Moran Cup and third in the Manley James) are
relatively new members so welcome to the seniors’
podiums (or should it be podia?).
The matches kicked off with a resounding away
victory against Mendip. Well, we actually won by
one match, 4-3. A special mention must go to Allan
Halden who stole his wife’s car and raced across
Somerset to be with us when his own car broke
down. What Rosemary said when she came out of
Waitrose loaded with shopping only to find her car
had gone remains a mystery. I just hope Allan didn’t
compound the matter by getting a speeding fine for
her to pay.
Graham Rose and myself should have completed
the Captain / Vice Captain challenge with our
match against Andrew Troup and John Allen, The
result must remain a secret so all I can say is that
John was hampered for a few holes by having his
Steve Wright - stevewright35@hotmail.co.uk
trousers on back to front! Once we explained the
meaning of “Reversible clothing” he rectified the
situation and played much better. I said we “should”
have completed the challenges because, we were
having so much fun, we decided to extend the
competition for a few more weeks. The new entry
sheet is on the board so enter if you think you can
beat us. Thank you to all of you who have paid their
tenners and taken us on, it is for a good cause.
Our second match was against Chipping Sodbury
at home and was another resounding victory (a real
resounding one this time), unfortunately it wasn’t
by us. We lost by 4 1/2 to 1 1/2, Tom Stanton and
Geoff Matthews scored our only win and Brian
Taylor and Tony Morris got the half. Brian and Tony
rather craftily took advantage of the hail to suggest
they called it a day on the fourteenth so we don’t
know what would have happened if they had
carried on. I think it’s not the winning but the taking
part that counts.
I know that there are a lot of people putting their
name down for matches at the moment but don’t
let that deter you. I will try to ensure that everyone
gets their fair share of games so just be patient, you
will play. Above all, have fun and keep smiling.

WHAT DO I GET FOR THE COUNTY LEVY?
Hmm… good question! As a member of Long
Ashton, you don’t have any choice about paying
your £10.85 “county levy” to the Gloucestershire
Golf Union (GGU) or £6.70 “capitation fee” to the
Gloucestershire Ladies County Golf Association
(GLCGA). The two organisations run quite
separately, though both are affiliated to
England Golf.
Firstly, we have to be affiliated in order to have our
course “rated” (i.e. given a Standard Scratch score)
so we can run qualifying competitions and award
handicaps. But we’re only rated every few years,
and actually that’s done by volunteers, at no direct
cost to the club. Where does the rest of the money
go, and how do we, as individual members, gain
any benefit?
Well, in truth, there isn’t much direct benefit for
most of us. Both the GGU and the GLCGA are
mostly concerned with supporting elite golfers and
those who aspire to join the elite. The numbers
speak for themselves.
Last year, the GGU’s total income (ignoring the
England Golf Levy which is collected but passed
on) was just under £200,000, approximately 80%
from the County Levy, 9% from various Entry
Fees, 7% from the sale of County Cards and the
remainder mostly from Sponsorship.
Over £100,000 of that was spent directly on
expenses for the various representative teams,
prizes, balls, clothing etc, coaching (about a third
of the total) and championship and competition
expenses.
Over £70,000 was spent on administration,
primarily on the only paid officer (the County
Secretary) as well as insurance, post, stationery,
auditors’ costs, other officers’ expenses and the
annual County dinner. Arguably, a big chunk of that
is effectively being spent on the elite, as well.
What do I mean by “elite”? Up to the Easter
weekend, the GGU had already fielded
representative teams at 5 different levels (Seniors,
1sts, 2nds, U18’s and U14’s). There’s an U16
team as well, but they haven’t played yet. By my
count, 62 players from 20 different clubs have
been selected to represent their County and Long
Ashton is very well represented; in fact we are one
of only two clubs to be represented in every one of
those five teams, the following having worn their
County jumpers (and, metaphorically, carried the
Cub flag) with pride:
Noah Hessey (h’cap 0.4) in the 1sts
Jack Pring (1.1) in the 2nds
Richard Wood (1.9) in the Seniors
Nathan Noore (4.4) in the U18’s
Ronnie Mitchell (4.5) in the U18’s
Will Lewis (7.1) in the U14’s (and Captain, this
season)
Isaac Feltham (22.4) in the U14’s
Josh Hewitt (23.0) in the U14’s
As you can see, the representative structure is not
all about those who are already very good golfers;
the U14’s provides an entry-level for promising
youngsters. It was real pleasure, just before Easter,
to watch a team of fourteen lads teeing off at The
Bristol GC against a team from Cornwall who were
“on tour”, having played Wiltshire and Surrey on
the previous two days. Just think about the effort
involved in setting up a tour like that, and you get
a feel for the voluntary effort that goes into giving

the youngsters a taste of representative golf. It’s
worth mentioning that the match was hosted by
the current GGU president, Ian Cornwall, and his
two immediate predecessors, Peter French
and David Windebank, three gentlemen who
have given big chunks of their lives to
Gloucestershire golf.
£1.25 of the GGU County Levy, just over £18,000
in total, was ring-fenced for the County Golf
Partnership (CGP) an organisation which includes
the GLCGA and the PGA, and whose primary aim
is “to introduce more people into the game and
into regular participation, regardless of age, gender
and background”, through a variety of programmes
including Get into Golf and GolfMark.
For the GLCGA (for whom our Club’s rep is Ann
Parker) has a slightly different structure and cost;
I don’t have a detailed breakdown so won’t try
to give more details, but I understand there is a
similar emphasis on the county teams. Bethan
Popel and Alex Giles, are currently in the County
1st team and we have had other youngsters who
have benefited from coaching and development.
Both the GLCGA and the GGU do run
competitions which are open to all members
(subject of course to availability), not just for the
low handicappers.
But arguably the biggest individual benefit for
both ladies and gents is the Inter-County Card,
which allows you to play at a concessionary rate
(usually the Guest Fee rather than the full Visitor
Green Fee) at over 1,300 clubs in 33 English
counties, from Cornwall to Northumberland. This
year, to buy the card will cost you £16 (which
typically you save, the first time you use it). The
GGU is considering a move to provide one to every
member for a lower cost (perhaps around £3-4)
incorporated into the County Levy.
Personally, I would like to see the Inter-County
Card provided free to every member, with the
County’s expenditure being cut by the amount
which has previously been raised from the sale
of cards. And I would like to see the County Golf
Partnership getting a much bigger share of the
County Levy so it can reach out to even more
prospective golfers.
What do you think? If you have any views on the
GGU, on what it does or how it operates or how it
spends your money, please let me know.
Thank you.
